On our way out, Mia stopped an old security guard near the entrance. She asked him about the hallway behind the cabinet.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡIJxMjXDTqV

The guard looked towards the galleries.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8G6lv7B5dq

"Three lights?" he asked.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxao0h2eeRi

Mia nodded. "And three paintings."92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡHDuNhg425T

"We took those paintings down years ago."92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡggU4fE2noA

Daniel opened his mouth, then closed it again.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ1AZltlLJzw

"Why?" Mia asked.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8Akabq8wkl

The guard rubbed a thumb along the edge of his name badge.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdfYDrs7hwx

"People kept coming back to see them. A few were here almost every day."92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxhhrdi8pG4

Mia gripped the folded leaflet. "But there were other visitors in there. An elderly couple. Two women. One had a red scarf."92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡCaF5rcqsvI

The guard's thumb stopped moving.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡZrmD6Rfgjp

He looked past us, towards the rooms we had just left.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡkVvf0wHn7y

"Some still come," he said. Then he looked at Mia and Daniel.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡiBIthq6Fdz

"Did any of you stand under the lamps for a long time?"92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8c0Yy2tLqE

Mia and Daniel looked at each other. Neither of them answered.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡNVjjBzbc4f

Then he wished us a pleasant afternoon.

For weeks afterwards, I thought about the woman in the red scarf. Oliver had spoken to her. We had all heard her say, “It’s a lamb.”92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ3GPox3GIwB

But she was never talking to Oliver.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡh04fwAgqmy

She was talking to the wall."92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8cMx7i6nGF

Months later, Mia told me she still dreams about the woman in the snow.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡSwNrS14XXL

I still have the photograph. I don’t need to open it to remember where Daniel and Mia should have been.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDzbPQ4ZeWk

And, since that afternoon, I have a habit I can’t seem to shake it off.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTMDrkkJX9O

Whenever someone stops beside me in a gallery, I look at them first. If I didn’t hear them approach, I move away.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡeLhw5wpCzC

I remember the women in that hallway. How easily we stepped aside for them. How we listened to them talk, never thinking to question whether they belonged there.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡWmVpSU41gf

They looked like ordinary visitors.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ0MDOWamCQh

I still visit galleries. Sometimes I go alone.92Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ3GD7BLQ3VH
