When the lights came on, everyone stood up. Parents crowded towards the stage while teachers tried to keep the children behind the curtain.

I couldn't see Mum anymore, so I called Dad. He answered on my second try.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡguRpLNXVUi
“We're getting Jamie,” Dad said. “Where are you two?”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡzM9guVt1Rs
“By the doors,” I told him.55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡC6PMQfKJ7U
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡyqeXTElSuA
“Is Nora with you?”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡlNWItxZgNk
I looked at the woman standing beside me.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4ntbXTCrmc
“Yes.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡYEv13oFe4R
“All right,” Dad said. “You two can head home if you want. We'll get Jamie something to eat.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdt6cDAUFEv
Before I could mention the strange calls, someone spoke to him in the background.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4BEg8i9dIL
“I'll see you at home,” he said, and hung up.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡz5AHx6mPO4
Nora held out her hand.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡLEDTOek3uI
“Let me see the number that's been calling you.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡfdFa8Dq4IG
I gave her my phone. She checked the earlier calls, then handed it back.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡA8Tt1GakEH
“It really is my number,” she said. She wasn't smiling anymore.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡEOPajcvpg9
“Could someone else be using it?” I asked.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡVy35lJTORE
“I don't know.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡb5ys8AWzxF
She sounded worried too. Somehow, that made me feel a little better.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4mxM61FEn5
Outside, the car park was still full. Nora stopped beside a blue car, checked the number plate and shook her head.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTnYZGcY5vO
“Wrong car,” she muttered.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡS1phtxYg1C
“You parked by the fence,” I reminded her.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ3N06LMSrpH
“Oh, right. Sorry. It's been a long day.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡi9gmfdmfLm
We walked to her car. She took the keys from her bag, unlocked the doors and got into the driver's seat.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡbiPUyZt404
I waited beside the open passenger door.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJz1UwPxju5
It was her bag, her keys, her car. Even the scratch beside the handle was there, from the time she'd parked too close to a brick wall.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡW6UUGfseZn
I couldn't find anything wrong.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ1qeEIZPENZ
Then my phone rang again.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ00aOic7pXo
Nora's name appeared on the screen.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ2bhfL0fCXW
I answered, keeping my eyes on the woman in the driver's seat.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡpVhxOarf8g
“Lilith, listen to me.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡV4EPfUT5DE
The voice on the phone sounded exactly like hers. This time, I could hear every word.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDtAleRaZTh
“Mum's coming. Wait for her.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡQBw01jh9pR
“Where are you?” I asked the caller.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡiKme9SbRaf
“I fell outside. They took me—”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡjzOaOeY5om
“Took you where?”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡQswPva72T6
“Where are you now, Lilith?”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡXQIggHZNSE
“In the car park. Nora's in the car.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxpKDwdIGyD
There was a short silence.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4Joua3hRxC
“Don't get in,” the voice said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡo8x4ITmzKN
The Nora in the driver's seat leaned towards the open passenger door.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDcmtO0dGa4
“What are they saying?” she asked.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡbsS4nea9am
I covered my phone's microphone with my hand.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdfjNpCXkVw
“She says you fell.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡaXRq2nxZgx
Nora looked down at herself, then back at me.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡz4XQ1vR0qs
“Lilith,” she said quietly.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdCLAqmQbrF
She sounded hurt, as though I'd accused her of something.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡBiRZtpNqzH
I moved my hand away from the microphone.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡrAXTQgh34R
“Get away from her!” the caller shouted.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡqDRSMBACZb
I flinched.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡr0D2J49v7G
Nora got out of the car. She didn't try to take my phone or come closer. She stood a few steps away.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxvt5sYLT86
“Do you want to wait for Mum?” she asked.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8pSzHABMt8
I looked back towards the hall. Families were still coming through the doors. I could have gone back inside and waited with them.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdPiRic5f0T
The person on the phone was crying now.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡeE8ga7I1Of
“Please, Lilith. Just go back inside.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJcWEvgA3Gf
Nora hardly ever cried, especially in front of me. The voice sounded like hers. But crying didn’t sound like her at all.55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡG96Ty2EmcR
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ1DadLorSBa
But the woman beside the car was watching me with the same worried expression I'd seen so many times before.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡRoSmQqkSby
She rubbed the little scar on her chin with her thumb.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ3gme2COF2X
I knew that habit. Nora did it when she couldn't find the right words.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡDVrRF5BSTk
“Remember when you got lost at the pool?” the woman beside the car asked softly.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡLLX8OPU1xV
I nodded, still holding the phone to my ear.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ1VQLPIkmGo
“You hid behind the lockers because you thought Mum was going to shout at you,” she said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡvH7RLPUHWt
“You said you'd tell her it was your fault,” I replied.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡWnOcqPfQD0
“And she shouted at both of us,” she said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ49Tz2ahI7j
I let out a small laugh before I could stop myself.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡa3gB9uzk6H
Then the voice in my ear spoke.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡvBXIkVL1kQ
“I know that too.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡRjj89xGYQL
The woman beside the car fell silent.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡWtCjhHRbGl
“Lilith,” the caller said, “Ask me something else.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡRirk1A3y8C
I looked from my phone to the face in front of me.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡNYPPRjGQLy
I had thought the memory would help. Now I didn't know what else to ask.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡfp8DSAYi4z
The woman beside the car held out her hand, palm up.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡj0CuTdPNh1
“We can wait here,” she said. “You don't have to decide right now.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡy7CS3WS6Gb
I took her hand.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡme57YSG769
It was warm. Her fingers closed around mine with a familiar squeeze.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡpKFZazaNFw
“Lilith?” the caller said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡgrT3s2o1RL
I looked at the woman holding my hand. I could see her face. I could feel her fingers. The other voice was coming from somewhere I couldn't see.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡTiJoYzoQUI
I ended the call.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡzCAHPMKj5x
“Let's go home,” I said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡZNGuGCXiFs
────── ✠ ──────
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡbHLfeLu62O
On the way home, we talked about Jamie and the little girl who'd walked offstage.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡi547h7wpuy
Nora laughed in the right places. She sounded like herself.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡQAJUjgZtjw
Whenever we passed under a streetlight, I glanced at her face. I wasn't even sure what I was looking for.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡuRzzRmFGir
At a red light, she noticed.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡKbiaaEEXx6
“What?” she asked.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡJh7M0Jy7Ca
“I'm sorry about your coat.”
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡpdEAu6uqTz
“It's only a coat,” Nora said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ0NwVSpxmYc
That should have made me feel better. I'd wanted her to say it all day.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡrRQ5ApR6Es
At home, she put the kettle on while I went upstairs to change. When I came back, she'd made tea and put my mug in my usual place.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡLZbEzSAqXe
The handle faced my right hand. She knew I hated picking up a hot mug by its sides.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡNV2or4HcUF
We sat at the kitchen table until a car pulled up outside.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡhzNWPpMiuz
Nora glanced towards the window.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ68LRokFxaS
“I'll get the door,” she said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡspqqIIvL7y
She left the kitchen. A moment later, I heard the front door open.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡM9JuKr9f9l
“Lilith?” Mum called.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8hBBDLRfMp
“In here,” I answered.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡhaTUIagwDL
I waited for Nora to come back, but Mum entered the kitchen alone. She was still wearing her coat.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡUGxMPRZ5wT
“Where's your sister?” Mum asked.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡttYcL6FvQk
“She just let you in,” I said.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ0RNyKgl3mT
Mum stared at me.
55Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡLaIgrfpnLB
“No, Lilith. The door was already open.”
