The Difficult Days of Childhood
At the age of twelve, another major change came into the life of Md. Kabir Hossain. His father brought Kabir back from his maternal grandparents’ home to his own house. He enrolled Kabir in the sixth grade at a high school near their home.
At that time, new hope arose in Kabir’s heart. After leaving the loving environment of his maternal grandparents’ home and returning to his father’s house, he thought that perhaps he would now be able to live with his own family and continue his studies properly. But reality proved to be much harder for him.
After returning to the family, Kabir had to face many difficulties. His stepmother did not provide him with enough food. Many times, Kabir would go to school without eating anything. He had to attend his classes while suffering from hunger.
It was not only a lack of food. After returning home from school, Kabir also had to perform various household chores. While other children were busy studying and playing, Kabir had to spend his time doing different kinds of work around the house.
Kabir’s older brothers and sisters had already grown considerably. Therefore, his stepmother did not have many problems with them. But Kabir was still young. As a result, many of the household responsibilities were placed on his shoulders.
His education was also not given much importance. It became difficult for him to find enough time to study regularly. Before going to school and after returning from school, he had to spend so much time doing household work that very little time remained for his studies.
Meanwhile, Kabir’s father often had to stay outside the home to meet the needs of the family. As a result, he did not always notice the hardships that his young son was going through.
In this way, Kabir’s childhood gradually moved forward through a difficult struggle. Hunger, household responsibilities, obstacles to his education, and a lack of affection—all of these together turned his life into a story of harsh reality.
Yet Kabir did not give up. From a very young age, he began to experience the difficult sides of life. Those difficult experiences would one day become some of the greatest lessons of his life.
