It was a chilly evening in the city of Filitew. Typical temperature for a winter nevertheless. The date was December 26th year 22 '61, a day after the most celebrated holiday across the world. I went out for dinner with my usual friend group.
Bri, a natural redhead she tried to make others believe, was cold all because of a heartbreak. She relied on drugs and smoking to find warmth within her. Her predominantly bitchy attitude had always been there though. She was the oldest in our group, being the age of 24. I’m not introducing her first because of that, no, I am introducing her first as she is the one I met first. She used to date my older cousin, that’s how we met. I was close to my late cousin and so was she, even before they began dating.
Milo, 23. He’s never been the one to put us before him but we loved him nonetheless. He grew up looking handsome. Each year, he’d experience a glow up. He was also tall and athletic. Dark brown, coily hair he liked to style in various ways : Afro, cornrows, braids, twists. He wasn’t the serious kind of guy until it came to relationships. Date to marry was his personal motto. He was fun, that's why I became friends with him. Totally not because our dads were friends years before we were born.

Alya, 20 years of age. She and I were born the same year. We met in 8th grade but befriended each other only midyear. I didn’t know back then that she’d be the only real friend I’d have left post-high-school. We were a duo that made it through at least three friend groups. She was a bit boy crazy and easily manipulated by them. That made her go through delusion and fall into depression. Thankfully she got out of her toxic cycle thanks to Freddie. The depression and manipulation part that is. She’s been fancying Milo since last autumn but according to her it’s just a little crush that’ll pass away before the coming of summer. I wished I could believe her.

Anthony, the youngest being 19 years of age. Looking at him you’d think he’s a player, which he technically is but– nevermind there’s not “but”, he is. He never got into a lasting relationship but he’s had his share of situationships. A foretaste before the real meal he once said. After his parents divorced, I think he became scared of commitment. I never told anyone this but I had fallen for him back in highschool. His bitchy attitude turned me off and maybe the fact that he was a year younger. Either way his attitude and Bri’s attitude go hand-in-hand and that’s mostly why they get along so great.
Frederyca aka Freddie, she was calm but not the type of calmness due to shyness. No, she was an observant one, the calmness came due to the fact that she didn’t want people to notice that she was analyzing them. Beautiful inside and out, understanding and streetsmart rather than booksmart which, at first glance, you wouldn’t expect from someone who looks like her. Her hair laid down to her waist. It was wavy and black. Practically jet black. She has an earthy-core girl vibe to her and it went perfectly with her soothing voice. She was the same age as Milo. They had graduated at the same school but only became friends after entering the friend group. Bri introduced us to Freddie and I introduced them to Milo.

“Angie” My real name is Angelique but they call me Angie. Mostly because they don’t know or forgot how to say my real name. Only Frederyca bothered to ask me how to pronounce it. I lifted my eyes off the menu and looked at Anthony who had called out my name. He was sitting in front of me, on the left side of the table. Bri and Milo were in the middle row, facing each other. Freddie was beside Bri and Alya beside Milo. “What are you getting ?” he asked.
“I’m not sure. I’ve only decided on the drink.”

“I know what I’m getting.” All of us but Bri looked at Freddie. She closed the menu book and pushed it forward.

“You can’t get burgers and fries each time, Frederyca.” sighed Bri. Freddie reopened the menu book and we all went back to ours.

“I like it though.” She mumbled.

“What are you getting ?” I was peeking at Milo’s page when Alya asked him. She saw me peeking and I looked away.

“This looks interesting, I'll get that.” He pointed at his choice.

“I’ll get that then.” She pointed at her choice and he nodded in agreement.

“Let’s order now, I’m hungry.” Whatever Bri ordered we did. You could see it as perks of being the oldest or her just being a scary human when angry. The waiter came and he asked us for our orders. Milo went first then Bri, then Alya, then Freddie. It was now Tony and I’s turn. We glanced at each other then our menus as we tried to pick any meal good enough for us to eat.

“And, your meal ?”

“I’ll have the same thing she takes.” commented Tony. I looked at him with widened eyes and shook my head. I gotta put me first, he mouthed. I stared blankly at my menu, my eyes wandering from one meal to another. The letters were switching places and I couldn’t read what was right in front of me.

“I-I’ll take this one.” I pointed at a random name and showed it to the waiter who wrote it down on his notepad.
“Bloody meat with pasta. A popular demand.” He said. He recapitulated our orders before taking the menus away and heading elsewhere.

“Y’all picked the same thing as me.” commented Bri.

“I didn’t pick anything. She did. It better be good, Angie.”

“You should’ve picked your own shit.” I talked back.
