Let it go, let it go. That's what everyone tells me.20Please respect copyright.PENANAqGh09Faf47
I too have often thought I should let it go. But whenever the thought comes, I find I cannot.
It carried me through so many sleepless nights. In the amber warmth of dusk, it brought me so much comfort. It brought me success, and it carried me far from home, to a foreign land. It was heavy in my hand, and heavier still in my heart.
Seeing it, I would think of the one who gave it to me. I would think of the childhood, the adolescence, the youth we spent together. How I longed to share with her the quiet of my fields, how I longed to speak with her of poetry and distant horizons.
But today, I cannot find it.
Did I tuck it away in that small, delicate box? Or did it hide itself, on purpose, somewhere beyond my sight? I searched every drawer of my desk, I turned out every cabinet, large and small, and still I could not find it.
I feel a deep guilt. It was I who failed to keep it safe, I who failed to hold it in my hand each day. I gave in to the ease and speed of the ballpoint pen; chasing the pace of the times, I neglected it.
I neglected this thing that does not come and go at a whim, that cannot be summoned or dismissed.
It walked beside me, word by word, through countless deep nights. It saw me at my loneliest. It heard the words I never spoke aloud. It wrote my letters for me, recorded my dreams for me, and set down, stroke by stroke, the things I could not put into words.
Now it is gone. I have searched everywhere. Nothing.
I still remember the cool touch of its casing, the faint resistance as it moved across the page. I remember how it stood in silence, like someone standing there, saying nothing, yet remembering everything.
Perhaps it is still somewhere, in some corner. Perhaps it is gone for good.
But it was once here. And that is enough.
