By Wednesday, Alex had already forgotten about the list in his notebook.

Not completely.

He still remembered it.

He just hadn't looked at it since Monday.

There were more important things happening.

At least, that's what he told himself.

The announcement came during second period.

Their principal's voice crackled through the classroom speakers.

"Students are reminded that the annual inter-class academic competition will be held this Friday. Each class must submit a team of three students by the end of today."

The classroom immediately came alive.

Someone groaned.

Someone else cheered.

A boy near the window whispered, "We're finished."

Their teacher turned around.

"Quiet."

The room settled.

"Before you start complaining," she continued, "this is not optional. Your class will participate."

A hand went up.

"Ma'am, what happens if we lose?"

"You lose."

The class laughed.

The teacher smiled.

"At least you understand the concept."

Alex looked down at his notebook.

Academic competition.

That sounded harmless.

Then Marcus leaned toward him.

"You should do it."

Alex looked at him.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I said no."

"That's not a reason."

"It's the reason I have."

Marcus sighed dramatically.

"Alex, you're literally one of the smartest people in this class."

"I'm not."

"You got the highest score on the last math test."

"That doesn't mean I'm smart."

"What does it mean?"

"I studied."

Marcus stared at him.

"That's usually how being smart works."

Alex laughed.

"You're annoying."

"I've been told."

Their teacher began writing names on the board.

Several students volunteered.

Most of them were the usual high achievers.

Then a girl near the front raised her hand.

"Ma'am, can I suggest someone?"

The teacher nodded.

"Go ahead."

"Alex."

Alex froze.

The entire class turned.

His face immediately became warm.

Marcus covered his mouth.

Alex whispered,

"Don't."

Marcus whispered back,

"I'm not doing anything."

"You suggested this."

"I suggested nothing."

"You absolutely did."

The teacher looked at Alex.

"Would you be willing to participate?"

Alex hesitated.

He didn't like being the center of attention.

But he also didn't want to say no simply because people were watching.

"Sure."

A few students nodded.

The teacher wrote his name down.

Then she looked around.

"We need one more."

A chair scraped against the floor.

Ryan raised his hand.

"I'll do it."

The room became quieter.

Alex glanced at him.

Ryan smiled.

Not at the teacher.

At Alex.

"Should be fun."

Alex looked away.

After class, Marcus caught up with him.

"You know what's funny?"

"What?"

"You."

"That's not funny."

"You voluntarily agreed to something."

Alex shrugged.

"It seemed interesting."

"Since when do you like competitions?"

"I don't."

"Then why?"

Alex thought about it.

He didn't have a good answer.

Maybe because he was tired of always avoiding things.

Maybe because saying yes had felt strangely good.

Maybe because, for once, he wanted to find out what would happen if he stopped automatically choosing the safest option.

"I just wanted to try."

Marcus nodded.

"Fair enough."

They reached the cafeteria.

The smell of food filled the room.

Marcus immediately changed direction.

"Food."

Alex followed.

They found an empty table.

For several minutes, they ate without talking.

Then Marcus suddenly said,

"You know Ryan's going to make this annoying."

Alex looked at him.

"I know."

"You could quit."

"I could."

"But?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"But then he'd know he could make me quit."

Marcus nodded.

"Fair."

Across the cafeteria, Ryan sat with several other students.

He wasn't looking at Alex anymore.

That was almost more unsettling.

Alex returned to his food.

He didn't realize someone was watching him from another table.

A girl from his class.

The same girl who had nominated him.

Her name was Hannah.

She had noticed something most people hadn't.

Alex wasn't stupid.

He wasn't even particularly timid.

He simply seemed to spend most of his life trying not to take up space.

She wondered why.

The next afternoon, the three students chosen for the competition met in the library.

Alex arrived first.

Hannah was already there.

She looked up.

"You're early."

"So are you."

"I like being prepared."

Alex sat down.

"Same."

There was an awkward silence.

Hannah opened a notebook.

"So, we should probably figure out who's doing what."

Alex nodded.

"I can handle mathematics and logic."

"I assumed."

"You assumed?"

"You got the highest math score."

Alex looked down.

"Oh."

Hannah smiled.

"You really don't like compliments, do you?"

"I don't know what to say to them."

"Just say thank you."

"Thank you."

"See? Easy."

Alex smiled.

Then Ryan entered.

He dropped into the chair opposite them.

"Let's get this over with."

Hannah frowned.

"You could at least pretend to care."

Ryan shrugged.

"I'll show up Friday."

"That's not preparation."

"Relax."

Alex watched them argue.

Something about the situation felt strange.

Ryan wasn't bullying him.

He wasn't threatening him.

He wasn't even paying much attention to him.

And somehow, Alex realized, that made this one of the first times they had been in the same room without Ryan trying to dominate the situation.

It was almost normal.

Almost.

They spent the next hour preparing.

And Alex discovered something.

He enjoyed it.

Not the attention.

Not the competition.

The problem-solving.

Hannah was good at remembering information.

Ryan was surprisingly quick at certain logic problems.

And Alex was good at finding patterns.

For once, the three of them weren't three students.

They were a team.

A bad team.

An awkward team.

But still a team.

When the meeting ended, Hannah closed her notebook.

"Same time tomorrow?"

Ryan stood.

"Sure."

He looked at Alex.

"Don't embarrass us."

Alex expected the familiar sting.

Instead, he simply said,

"I won't."

Ryan stared at him for a second.

Then walked away.

Hannah looked at Alex.

"You're different today."

Alex frowned.

"How?"

"I don't know."

She picked up her books.

"Less... nervous."

Alex considered that.

Maybe she was right.

Or maybe he was simply tired of being nervous.

Friday came faster than expected.

The auditorium was packed.

Students filled the seats while teachers stood along the walls.

The competition wasn't enormous.

It wasn't some national championship.

It was just a school event.

But to Alex, it felt important.

He sat backstage with Hannah and Ryan.

The first round began.

Questions appeared on the screen.

The timer started.

Their team answered the first three.

Then four.

Then five.

Alex found himself smiling.

They were actually doing well.

Marcus watched from the audience and gave him a thumbs-up.

Alex shook his head, laughing.

Then the final question appeared.

Everyone went silent.

It was a logic problem.

Alex read it once.

Then twice.

Something wasn't right.

He looked at the information again.

There.

A pattern.

He grabbed the answer sheet.

"Wait."

Hannah looked at him.

"What?"

"The question is misleading."

Ryan leaned closer.

"What?"

Alex pointed.

"This condition changes the answer."

Hannah looked again.

Her eyes widened.

"You're right."

They submitted their answer.

The timer reached zero.

The auditorium erupted.

The teacher collected the sheets.

Several minutes passed.

Then the results were announced.

Their class had won.

The room exploded.

Marcus jumped out of his seat.

Alex laughed.

He couldn't help it.

For a few minutes, he forgot about Ryan.

Forgot about the hallway.

Forgot about being invisible.

He had done something.

Not because he was stronger.

Not because he was popular.

Not because someone had rescued him.

Because he had been useful.

Because he belonged on that team.

As they left the stage, Hannah stopped beside him.

"You know," she said, "you should do things like this more often."

Alex looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you're good at them."

She walked away before he could answer.

Alex stood there.

Those words stayed with him.

Not because they were extraordinary.

But because he wasn't used to hearing them.

Marcus appeared beside him.

"Look at you."

Alex sighed.

"What?"

"You're smiling."

"So?"

"So nothing."

Marcus grinned.

"It's just nice."

Alex looked toward the crowded auditorium.

For once, being seen didn't feel frightening.

It felt good.

He didn't know yet that this small victory would matter.

Not because of the competition.

Not because anyone important had noticed.

But because Alex had just discovered something he had never seriously considered before:

Maybe being weak in one part of life didn't mean he was weak in everything.

And maybe—

just maybe—

he had been looking at himself through other people's eyes for far too long.
