“Hay,” Jesse said leaning against the cold blue metal lockers. “Hey,” Adelyne replied impatiently, opening her locker and piling more books into her bag, “What’s up?” Jesse asked, laughing slightly as she struggled to close her bag, “The sky, or the ceiling, or space, depends how far you're talking.” Adelyne replied, her voice laced with sarcasm. “You know what I mean.” Jesse rolled his eyes, “You asked what was up, I wouldn't put it past your stupid little brain to forget that the sky doesn't change altitude Jesse.” Adelyne said as she finally got the zipped shut, swung her bag onto her back and shut her locker door slightly more aggressively than she had intended. “Ouch how will I ever recover,” Jesse mimed, getting shot in the chest dramatically. “What do you want Jesse? I have places to be.” Adelyne complained, “I want lots of things; a new bike, a new car, a million pound, my own hou-,” Jesse started to list things until Adelyne cut him off, “Get to the point Jesse!” adelyne demanded coming to a halt halfway down the busy corridor and turning to face him, “Aww you're no fun.” Jesse frowned, Adeleyne grew impatient and turned to leave. “Okay, okay, a group of us are going to the edge of the woods after school and, I thought you should come.” Jesse hesitated before saying the last five words which Adelyne caught onto and raising one eyebrow said, “You thought I should come?” Jesse rubbed the back of his neck looking extremely sheepish, “What’s really going on Jesse.” Adelyne asked calmly but sternly. “Okay, fine there is a bet with the boys that not even i can make you go out to the woods on a school night, seen as your a goody two shoes and all.” Jesse folded like origami paper, “I don’t appreciate the goody two shoes comment but ill come I have no club meet, nothing for the student council, and the shop is closed for a week the only thing is my brother would have to come.” Adelyne replied with a huff, “You mean Levi, I love that little guy he is cool.” Jesse chuckled, “He isn’t that little and you loving something would imply you had a heart but the way you left Sophia sage would suggest otherwise.” Adelyne sneered “Harsh but fine. So you will come?” Jesse smiled like a kid on Christmas. “Fine.” Adelyne surrendered, “You won’t regret it!” Jesse called as he walked in the other direction, “I won't hold my breath.” Adelyne mumbled turning the corner at the end of the hall and walked into the first classroom on the right.

Sitting in her usual assigned seat by the window she took out her folder where she kept her homework perfectly organised along with her notebook, class work book, and pencil case. Once her desk was set up and she had taken her ten sips of water the class room had filled and nearly everyone had taken their seats before the bell rang and the teacher Mrs Hesdon walked in shutting the door behind her. Mrs Hesdon put her coffee flask on her desk, fired up the computer and started to take attendance, “Harry?” she called, “Present,” Harry replied, “Ava?” she called, “Here.” Ava answered, Mrs Hesdon went through name after name “Adelyne?” she called, “Here.” Adelyne replied the moment she had finished the last syllable, as if she had timed it. Mrs Hesdon went further down the list calling names till, “Jesse?” she called with no reply, “Jesse?” she called again to deafening silence, “Adelyne have you seen Jesse?” she asked. Adelyne thought for a moment before saying, "I've spoken to him but idk where he is now.” Mrs Hesdon looked disappointed but didn’t press the matter further. She finished the register and turned to a boy three tables from Adelyne, “Can you get the books and pass them around,” she pointed to the cubby of old tattered books at the front of the class, “Today we are going to carry on reading from where we left of last lesson, i want you to read the next two chapters and then write how you believe the characters actions correlate to their emotions.” Once the boy had distributed the books and the class had settled once more Mrs Hesdon sat behind her desk and started on a vast pile of paperwork.
Adelyne opened to the previously marked page and began to read as she turned the pages she realized the book was almost over, looking around she realized everyone else was either extremely behind or she had just read too far, she decided none the less she would do the writing assignment which she finished in less than ten minutes, Adelyne surveyed the room of writing and reading students and Mrs Hesdon who was focused on the papers Adelyne allowed her mind to wonder as she steered aimlessly out the bottom floor classroom window onto the field behind the school. She watched the clouds dance overhead and the birds fly in circles till something moving fast on the grass caught her eye at first she assumed it was a cat but when she looked again it was small running on two legs it was made out of wood, covered in bark and had antlers on its head surrounded by red mushrooms as it span its head looking over its shoulders Adelyne got a glimpse of its face which looks partly like a dear and partly human like an anime character Adelyne rubbed her eyes in disbelief and she was so focused on this fast moving wooden animal that when the classroom door was flung open it made her jump. Another teacher male extremely tall strode across the classroom to Mrs Hesdon's desk she looked up and he whispered something in her ear and as he pulled away the colour drained from her face she stood up abruptly and checked her watch, she cleared her throat to get the classes attention even though everyone was already trying to figure out what was going on. “Class is over fifteen minutes early, pack up and you can go to lunch.” She said with no further explanation and followed the male teacher out the room and they hurried down the corridor. The moment they were out of sight the class erupted, wild speculations were formed and two of Adelyne's friends had made their way to her desk and were now deep in conversation about some party they were hoping to go to. Adelyne was uninterested in anything other than what she had thought she had seen but when she turned back to the window there was nothing in the field but grass and dandelions. She packed her stuff back into her bag and as they left the classroom she left her homework on Mrs Hesdon's desk. Walking to the cafeteria it became apparent they weren't the only class to have been let out early. At their usual table Axel, Ivan, Liam, and Sierra sat across from Darcy, Imaya, and Adelyne, as they ate lunches they had packed because school lunches were expensive and not always the best Darcy started the conversation about what could be the reason as to why classes were let out early And as Ivan and Liam added to the ideas Adelyne finished her pasta said goodbye and wondered to the library.
Entering the library she waved to the librarian Kethleen and then made her way to the History section. Dropping her bag at her feet, Adelyne riffled through book after book, “What are you looking for today?” kethleen said as she made her way over, “Probably the biggest book you have.” Jesse said as he came around the corner of the other end of the shelf laughing, "I'm looking for town history.” Adelyne said as she pulled a large book off the shelf, miscalculating the weight and almost dropping it luckily Jesse had walked closer and was there to catch it, in Adelyne's attempt to save the book Jesse was now holding her hand, “Are you okay?” Jesse asked hesitating to pull his hand away, “It was just heavier than I thought.” Adelyne replied by taking the book back and turning away, she kicked her bag along the floor as she walked away, Jesse picked up the bag and followed her to the table she set the book on, “I told you she was looking for your biggest book Kethleen.” Jesse called making Kethleen laugh as she went back to sorting books in the corner. Adelyne didn't give any response she just opened the book to the very back index skimmed till she found the page she was looking for and reopened the book to the exact page, Adelyne pulled out the chair and sat down not taking her eyes of the words, “What you reading about?” Jesse badgered, “I wish you would form a real sentence.” Adelyne said offhandedly, “Fine,”Jesse rolled his eyes, "Adelyne what are you reading in this book you have chosen?” Jesse asked again sarcastically, “See now that wasn’t so hard was it, and im reading about the history of the town specifically if there is anything about the old woods particularly past the point they have wire fenced off.” Adelyne beamed turning the page
“No good will come from looking into the woods."Kethleen appeared next to them, freakishly quiet making them jump. “I’ll take that book thank you.” Kethleen didn’t ask, she said it with a persuasive tone Adelyne gave in.
As Kethleen walked away Adelyne turned to Jesse, “You know everyone, where is Mr Bolden's office?” “The head of town council and head of the school history department?” Jees asked, “Yes that's the one.” Adelyne urged, “It's hard to find ill take you.” Jesse said, picking up her bag once again and beckoned her to follow him as he walked towards the exit, beyond her better judgement she followed.
