Jedburgh always felt a little strange at night, but on the evening everything changed, the air felt heavier than usual — like the whole town was holding its breath.

Thirteen‑year‑old lillie noticed it first.

She sat on her bedroom floor, Bear curled beside her, his thick Husky fur warm against her leg. She was supposed to be doing homework, but instead she was doodling lightning bolts in the margins of her notebook. Bear’s ears twitched every few seconds, like he was listening to something she couldn’t hear.
