Madison ran up first, her backpack bouncing. “Lillie! You’re not gonna believe what we found!”
Lilly grabbed her arm. “Madison, don’t just yell it out here!”
Madison lowered her voice — barely. “Fine. But seriously. It’s bad.”
Lillie frowned. “What happened?”
Lilly glanced around nervously. “Jamie Carter’s mum called the police this morning.”
Lillie’s stomach dropped. “He’s still missing?”
Madison nodded. “And they found something in his room.”
“What?”
Lilly swallowed. “Handprints.”
Lillie blinked. “Okay… that’s not that weird.”
Madison shook her head. “Not human handprints.”
Lilly shivered. “They were long. Thin. Like… stretched fingers.”
Madison added, “And there were dozens of them. All over the wall. Like something was trying to pull him out.”
Lillie felt her skin crawl.
Bear, who had followed her to the gate, growled softly — staring at the woods behind the school.
Lillie turned.
The trees were still. Too still. No birds. No wind. Just a wall of dark green that felt like it was watching them.
