王は城楼の最上階に立ったまま、長いあいだ一言も発しなかった。身に纏う王衣にはなお金糸が施され、肩には王権の象徴たる深紅の外套が掛けられていたが、かつて臣民の視線を集めた王冠だけは、いまや鮮血を吸い込んだ鉄塊のように重かった。背後には侍臣が跪き、将軍たちは血に濡れた剣を握ったまま、誰一人として催促しようとはしなかった。皆が王の命を待っていたが、王は初めて、この世にはどうしても自分の口から発したくない命令が存在することを知った。
