Title: Preparation
The next thing the young man opened was the laptop that was there. There were only three things on the desktop: a bookmarked site, an email icon, and an icon that looked like a logo with HSA written on it. He opened the bookmarked site first and found two tabs open. He looked over the website. Its layout was simple and clean. Aside from the necessary forms, there was nothing else on it. At the very bottom was the apartment's copyright notice.
The first tab asked for his personal information, including his bank account. Dillan thought it might be the information needed for him to receive his salary since he hadn't provided any.
He thought it would be better to use a different account rather than his personal savings, so he opened a digital banking app and registered. Those were the details he entered on the site. After receiving a notification that everything was okay, he opened the second tab.
That one was the official Happy Stay website.
“Wow, they really advertised the apartment.”
He looked at the other details before closing the browser. Next, he clicked the HSA icon, and an interface appeared asking for a username and password. At the bottom was a registration link. He followed the instructions, and before long, another notification was sent to his email confirming that his database account was ready.
When he entered his details and opened the system, he saw a list of the apartment's floors. The young man blinked several times, but he wasn't imagining it. The list went all the way up to the fifteenth floor.
“Does that mean there are floors that only appear at night? Like the fifth floor that I need to visit later?” he muttered to himself.
Dillan sighed and closed the laptop. It was still early, and he needed to arrange his things in his room first. The room had its own bathroom, so after putting everything in order, he took a shower and ate his breakfast. He wanted to talk to Fernan, but he felt all his exhaustion hit him at once, and he couldn't stop himself from closing his eyes until he eventually fell asleep.
Vrrt… Vrrt… Vrrt…
Dillan opened his eyes when he heard the sound of his alarm. He couldn't see anything. He checked the time on his phone's lit screen. It was six in the evening.
Still groggy, he turned on his phone's flashlight. He felt around for the switch on the wall and turned on the light. He walked over to the study table and picked up the To-do list notebook again. He still had a few hours before he needed to visit the tenant in Room 502, and he wanted to ask Fernan about it.
To give himself some energy, he ate the food he had bought from a fast-food restaurant earlier before opening the door to his room. There were no lights on outside either. He took a chair again and placed it in front of the door.
“Fernan,” he called.
A moment later, what looked like white smoke formed in front of him. It slowly took the shape of a person, and he saw Fernan in his usual appearance and clothes.
“Do you need something, boss?”
He wanted to ask him about the To-do list, but then he remembered that Fernan didn't know anything about the caretaker's manual. Perhaps he didn't know anything related to the caretaker that was inside the room either.
“Do you know how I can get to Room 502?”
“There’s an elevator that can take you to that floor, boss.”
Dillan tilted his head before asking again, “Can you come with me?”
Fernan slightly lowered his head and looked at him again.
“Sorry, boss. If I'm not mistaken, this is your first job as a caretaker. Sir Dontae said that you’ll learn a job better if you do it yourself first.”
Only then did Dillan remember the old man who was the reason he was in this situation in the first place.
“Do you know where Sir Dontae is?”
Fernan shook his head, and before he could speak, Dillan had already raised his right hand.
“You don't have to answer that.” Dillan thought for a moment before asking again, “By the way, how will I know if, for example, someone wants to rent a room as a tenant at Happy Stay?”
“We just wait for a tenant. They come on their own. It's also up to you if you want to bring in a tenant, boss.”
Dillan's mouth twitched slightly when he heard the ghost's suggestion, and he thought about it for a moment. He knew the apartment was unusual. Even if its tenants were ghosts, the apartment still followed operating rules like business registration. And he was receiving notifications, which meant someone was handling the technical side of the apartment's operations. He just didn't want to find out whether that person was human or something else. He didn't need to know, and he didn't want to know.
“I almost forgot. I need to offer flowers and light candles. Do you know where I can get them?”
Fernan nodded. “I can take you to the basement, and the flowers are in Lot 1. I can take you there too.”
“By the way, Fernan, since I'll be living here now, how am I supposed to cook my food?” he asked. Honestly, it wasn't practical for him to keep buying food outside.
“You don't have to worry about that, boss. The apartment covers your stay here, including your food. If you want to visit the kitchen, I can take you there.”
“Someone cooks the food here?”
Fernan nodded. “You can buy whatever food you want to have cooked.”
He wanted to ask who cooked the food, but since there was something more important he had to do, he would think about the food later. What he needed to do now was get through the whole night. He also didn't know what he should prepare for the To-do list written in the notebook.
“Ah, boss, I just wanted to give you some advice.”
“Sure. What is it?”
“It would be better if you learned some self-defense.”
The young man's brows furrowed. “Why? Is there something I need to prepare for?”
It wasn't that Dillan knew nothing about self-defense. When he was a student in high school and university, he was part of the karate club. And not to brag, but he was often part of competitions.
“Don't tell me I need to use it on a tenant?”
“Ah… most of the tenants are nice, but sometimes there are some who don't follow the rules—”
Fernan smiled at him, and Dillan couldn't help but feel his hair stand on end when he saw it. Usually, this ghost showed no emotion when talking to him, but he didn't like that smile directed at him.
“Sometimes, the caretaker needs to visit the tenants. It's better if you discover it for yourself, boss.”
“Ah, is that so?”
Dillan stood up from his seat and adjusted the chair.
“Come with me to the basement.”
Fernan nodded and floated ahead of him. He took the bunch of keys and closed the door to his room.
As soon as he closed it, all the lights in the apartment suddenly turned on. He quietly followed the ghost, and they turned into a hallway with stairs leading down. All the areas they passed through automatically turned on their lights, but whenever Dillan looked back, he saw that they had already turned off again.
Even so, he wasn't surprised by it anymore. He needed to toughen himself up because he had decided to accept the job. Fernan stopped at a large door and waited for him to open it. Again, the light automatically turned on, as if there were sensors whenever someone entered.
He looked around the room and almost shouted when he saw the boxes directly in front of him, right in the middle of the room—there were three coffins.
