Los Angeles was still waking up when Daniel Okoro stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his bedroom.

From the thirty-second floor, the city looked almost perfect.

"You're serious?"

"Don't congratulate me yet."

Daniel walked outside.

A black luxury vehicle was waiting at the front.

Before he could get inside, his phone rang.

David.

"What's up?"

His best friend's voice came through the phone.

"Nothing much. Just checking on you."

"You checking on me? That's new."

"Man, I can check on my best friend."

"You usually call when you want something."

David chuckled.

"Maybe I just wanted to hear your voice."

Daniel shook his head.

"You're getting sentimental."

"Don't get used to it."

They both laughed.

David had been Daniel's best friend since their younger years.

They had grown up knowing each other's families. They had celebrated birthdays together, traveled together, helped each other through difficult times, and eventually built business connections together.

Daniel trusted David completely.

More than he should have.

"So," David said, "what are you doing tonight?"

"Dinner with Sophia."

"Another romantic night?"

"Maybe."

"Don't tell me you're finally proposing."

Daniel smiled.

"Why does everyone keep saying that?"

"Because you've been talking about her like she's your future wife."

Daniel looked toward the city.

"Maybe she is."

David went silent for half a second.

Then he laughed.

"Man, I'm happy for you."

"Thanks."

"You deserve to be happy."

"I appreciate that."

"Anyway, I'll see you later."

"Definitely."

He slipped his phone into his pocket and got into the car.

He had no idea that David was sitting across town with Sophia.

And he had no idea that the woman who had just sent him a loving message was lying to him.

Across the city, Sophia placed her phone on the table.

David sat beside her.

The apartment was quiet.

Sophia stared at the message Daniel had sent her.

"This is getting harder," she whispered.

"But they did."

"Daniel has been good to me."

David looked away.

"That doesn't mean you love him."

"I care about him."

"Do you love him?"

The silence was enough.

David leaned closer.

"You know what you want."

Sophia looked into his eyes.

"And what if choosing you destroys everything?"

David smiled faintly.

"Maybe everything was already falling apart."

Sophia closed her eyes.
