Selina had survived hard weeks before, but this one felt different. It wasn’t the bills, or the cancelled shift, or the rain. It was the accumulation — the slow, grinding weight of months spent stretching every dollar, every meal, every ounce of energy.
By Thursday night, she felt hollow.
She sat at her kitchen table, staring at her notebook. The numbers blurred. Her chest felt tight. Her thoughts spiraled in quiet, heavy circles.
What if I can’t keep doing this? What if I’m always one bill away from disaster? What if this is all my life will ever be?
She pressed her palms against her eyes, willing the thoughts to stop. But they didn’t.
She wasn’t crying — she was too tired to cry. She wasn’t panicking — she was too numb to panic. She was simply… worn down.
The apartment felt too quiet. The city outside felt too loud. Her life felt too small.
She stood abruptly, needing movement, needing something to anchor herself. She walked to the pantry and opened it. Inside: flour, oats, sugar, a half‑empty jar of peanut butter, and a few spices.
Not much. But enough.
She grabbed the oats and sugar. She grabbed the peanut butter. She grabbed the cinnamon.
Tonight she would make Warm Peanut‑Oat Comfort Bars — a recipe she’d invented during another night like this, when she needed something sweet, warm, and grounding. Something that reminded her she was still here.
As she mixed the ingredients, her breathing slowed. As she pressed the dough into the pan, her thoughts softened. As the bars baked, filling the apartment with a warm, nutty smell, she felt her chest loosen.
She cut a square, sat at the table, and took a bite. Soft. Sweet. Warm. Steady.
She exhaled — a long, shaky breath that felt like releasing a weight she’d been carrying for too long.
She wasn’t okay. But she wasn’t broken.
And she realised something important: Survival wasn’t just about money. It was about moments like this — choosing to keep going even when everything felt heavy.
She finished her bar, washed her dish, and sat quietly, letting the warmth settle inside her.
Tomorrow would be another day. Another chance. Another step forward.
And she would take it.
