Selina didn’t notice the change at first. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. It didn’t arrive with fireworks or revelations.
It arrived quietly — the way dawn arrives, not with a shout, but with a soft, undeniable glow.
It happened on a Thursday night.
She had just finished her shift, the café warm and humming with the last traces of the dinner crowd. Jonah had waved goodbye, the new hire had thanked her for the training, and Selina stepped out into the warm Brisbane evening with a calm she didn’t have to force.
She walked home slowly, enjoying the breeze, the streetlights, the gentle hum of the city. She didn’t feel rushed. She didn’t feel behind. She didn’t feel like she was scrambling to keep her life from falling apart.
She felt… steady.
Inside her apartment, she placed her bag down and paused. Her basil, mint, and coriander plants glowed on the windowsill. Her notebook lay open, filled with plans she was actively pursuing. Her course materials sat neatly stacked on the table. Her new work shoes rested by the door, worn in but sturdy.
She looked around and realised something she hadn’t consciously acknowledged:
She had built a life. A real one. A stable one. A hopeful one.
She wasn’t the woman who cried over overdue bills anymore. She wasn’t the woman who apologised to chairs. She wasn’t the woman who lived in constant fear of the next week.
She had become someone else — slowly, quietly, steadily.
Someone capable. Someone confident. Someone growing.
She walked to the window and touched the basil leaves gently. “I’m proud of you,” she whispered again. But this time, she felt the words settle deeper.
She wasn’t just proud of surviving. She was proud of becoming.
She opened her pantry, wanting to cook something that tasted like transformation — something warm, layered, and comforting. Something that reflected the depth of who she was now.
She found rice, onions, garlic, turmeric, and a handful of frozen vegetables.
Perfect.
Tonight she would make Golden Transformation Pilaf, a dish she’d invented during a week when she needed strength but now cooked because she had found it.
As she sautéed the onions, she felt grounded. As the turmeric turned the rice a warm gold, she felt steady. As she stirred in the vegetables, she felt whole — fully, quietly whole.
She plated the dish, sat at her table, and took a slow bite. Warm. Layered. Comforting.
She wasn’t who she used to be. And she didn’t want to be.
She was Selina — growing, expanding, becoming.
And she was finally ready to meet the woman she was turning into.
