Selina didn’t expect anything unusual to happen that evening. She walked home from the café under a soft Brisbane twilight, the air warm and gentle, the sky fading into lavender. Her shift had been steady, her mood calm, her thoughts quiet.
But something was different.
Not in the world — in her.
She unlocked her apartment, stepped inside, and felt a strange, electric awareness settle over her. The kind that whispered:
Something is about to change. And you’re ready for it.
She placed her bag down, checked her basil plant (thriving, as always), and sat at her kitchen table. Her notebook lay open, pages filled with dreams she’d dared to write. She flipped through them slowly.
The hospitality course. The supervisor roles. The balcony apartment. The herb garden. The future she wanted — not someday, but soon.
She stared at the page for a long moment, her heart beating steadily.
Then she reached for her phone.
Her fingers hovered over the screen. She wasn’t scared. She wasn’t doubting. She wasn’t apologising.
She was choosing.
She opened the TAFE website. She found the course. She read the details again. And then she clicked ENROL.
Her breath caught — not in fear, but in awe.
She had done it. She had said yes. To herself. To her future. To the life she wanted.
She sat back, letting the truth wash over her. She wasn’t the woman who barely survived anymore. She wasn’t the woman who apologised to chairs. She wasn’t the woman who lived week to week with no horizon.
She was Selina — rebuilding, growing, reaching.
And tonight, she had stepped into her future.
She stood, walked to the pantry, and chose ingredients with a kind of reverence. She wanted to cook something that tasted like courage — something bold, bright, and celebratory, even if it was still cheap.
She found lentils, coconut milk, garlic, and spices.
Perfect.
Tonight she would make Coconut‑Garlic Celebration Lentils, a dish she’d invented once when she needed strength but now cooked because she deserved joy.
As the lentils simmered, filling her apartment with warm, fragrant air, she felt her chest loosen. As she stirred in the coconut milk, she felt her shoulders relax. As she plated the dish, she felt proud — deeply, fiercely proud.
She sat at her table, took a slow bite, and let the warmth spread through her.
She had said yes. And everything would change because of it.
