The connection didn’t fade.

Every hour after the courtyard collapse, El felt Calder’s presence like a second heartbeat beneath her own. A pulse that wasn’t hers. A pressure that wasn’t hers. A whisper that wasn’t hers.

He had gotten inside her power.

And now her power was inside him.

The town felt it too.

People walked with tight shoulders and clenched jaws. Conversations snapped like brittle twigs. The air felt heavy, electric, wrong.

By late afternoon, the sky had turned a strange shade of grey — not storm clouds, not smoke, just a dull, oppressive colour that made everything look washed out and tired.

El sat on her bed, knees pulled to her chest, trying to breathe through the pressure.

It wasn’t just behind her ribs anymore.

It was everywhere.

In the walls. In the floor. In the air.

Her heartbeat thudded painfully.

She felt the world leaning.

She felt Calder leaning too.

She grabbed her jacket and stepped outside.

The Meeting

Calder was waiting at the park — the same jacaranda tree, the same scattered blossoms, the same quiet intensity in his eyes.

But something was different.

He looked… strained.

His hands trembled slightly. His breathing was uneven. His eyes were too bright, too sharp, too aware.

“El,” he said, voice tight, “it’s happening.”

She swallowed hard. “I know.”

Calder stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“I can feel everything you feel,” he said. “Every spike. Every fear. Every memory.”

El flinched. “I don’t want you to.”

“I can’t stop it.”

He pressed a hand to his chest, as if steadying his heartbeat.

“El… your power is bleeding into me.”

Her breath caught.

“And mine is bleeding into you.”

El froze.

“What?” she whispered.

Calder looked up, eyes wide with something between awe and terror.

“I think I have a piece of your power now,” he said. “And you have a piece of mine.”

El shook her head violently. “No. No, Calder, that’s not—”

“It is.”

He stepped closer, voice trembling.

“El… I can feel impulses. Not mine. Yours. And I think you can feel mine too.”

El’s pulse hammered.

She didn’t speak.

She couldn’t.

Calder swallowed hard.

“We’re not just connected,” he said. “We’re merging.”

El felt the world tilt.

The pressure surged.

The air tightened.

And then—

The town screamed.

The Eruption

It started with a single shout — sharp, panicked, echoing through the streets. Then another. And another. Until the entire town seemed to erupt in chaos.

People ran. People fought. People collapsed. People screamed.

Car alarms blared. Dogs barked frantically. Windows shattered.

El staggered backward, clutching her chest.

“What’s happening?” she gasped.

Calder grabbed her shoulders, his grip desperate.

“El,” he said, “listen to me. This is us.”

Her breath trembled. “No—”

“Yes.”

Calder’s voice cracked.

“El… our connection is amplifying everything. Your fear. My fear. Your power. My influence. It’s all feeding into the town.”

El shook her head violently. “Make it stop!”

“I can’t!”

“Calder—”

“El, listen to me!”

He pulled her closer, their foreheads almost touching.

“You have to calm down,” he said. “Right now.”

“I can’t!”

“You have to!”

“I CAN’T!”

The pressure snapped.

The world leaned.

And the entire town froze.

Not completely — not like statues — but in a sudden, eerie stillness. People stopped mid‑movement. Mid‑shout. Mid‑fight. The air itself seemed to hold its breath.

El gasped, stumbling backward.

Calder steadied her, his chest heaving.

“El,” he whispered, “you just stopped the whole town.”

Her pulse hammered.

She didn’t speak.

She couldn’t.

Calder’s voice softened, but his eyes stayed intense.

“You’re stronger than you think,” he said. “And now that we’re connected… we’re unstoppable.”

El stared at him, heart pounding, mind spiraling.

She didn’t know if he was right.

She didn’t know if he was lying.

She didn’t know if he was helping her…

…or binding her.

But she knew one thing:

The town had erupted because of them.

And Calder wasn’t afraid of that.

He was waiting for it.
