The Words I Wanted to Hear
"How much did you score?"
My father's voice echoed through the living room as I walked in, holding my mark sheet tightly.
"91.7%," I replied, trying to hide the smile that had been on my face all morning.
He looked at the paper for a few seconds. I waited for a smile, a pat on my shoulder, or maybe just a simple "Well done."
Instead, he sighed.
"You should have scored above 93%. You wasted your time. Others have done better."
His words were calm, but they felt heavier than a shout.
I nodded silently and walked into my room.
That night, I couldn't sleep. I kept replaying our conversation. I wasn't thinking about the marks anymore. I was thinking about the words that never came.
"I'm proud of you."
Those four words were all I wanted.
The next morning, my mother noticed I was unusually quiet.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing," I lied.
She smiled gently. "Sometimes your father doesn't know how to express his feelings. He wants you to succeed."
"I know," I whispered. "But I also want him to see how hard I tried."
For the first time, I realized that success isn't only about numbers. It's also about feeling seen.
A few days later, I opened my notebook and wrote down the conversation exactly as it happened.
Then, underneath it, I wrote the conversation I wished we had.
"How much did you score?" my father asked.
"91.7%."
He smiled.
"You worked hard for this. I'm proud of you. This isn't the end of your journey—it's the beginning. Keep learning, and you'll reach even greater heights."
I smiled back.
"Thank you, Dad."
Reading those imagined words made my eyes fill with tears. The marks on the paper stayed the same, but somehow my heart felt lighter.
Life doesn't always give us the conversations we hope for. Sometimes people love us but don't know how to show it. Sometimes expectations become louder than appreciation.
But I made a promise to myself that day.
If I ever become a parent, a teacher, or even a friend, I will never let someone's hard work go unnoticed. I will celebrate effort before perfection. I will choose encouraging words because I know how powerful they can be.
Some conversations end in disappointment.
Some become unforgettable memories.
And some remind us to become the kind of person who speaks the words we once needed to hear.
Because a few kind words can stay in someone's heart for a lifetime.23Please respect copyright.PENANAMFUlSFALGZ
