«Listening to you speak, I almost feel as if my destiny has just been stolen from me without my having any say in the matter. If I really do have that iron will you so aptly described, I’ve lacked it since I met you.
Nicholas took her hands.
«It’s something I love so much about you, Amber. That wonderful sincerity. I hope it never leaves you.
They talked about various things.
Since that romantic evening, they spent all their free time seeing each other. They walked and traveled together. And when Nicholas was finally sure of his own feelings as well as Amber’s, he decided to ask her hand in marriage the day she turned twenty-three. They spent a very romantic evening together. And in a voluptuous whisper, Nicholas asked her to become his wife.
Accepting with all her heart, Ambre promised to stay by his side for the rest of her life. They embraced and kissed tirelessly.
Mad with joy and love, she gave him her body with certainty and serenity.
Ambre thought she’d never feel anything so strong. If only they’d both known in advance that another person, terrible and magnificent, would soon come into their lives and destroy everything, then maybe Ambre would never have agreed to come with them to Greece. She too would have preferred to rip out his heart and burn it to ashes rather than have to desire forever a monster of pride and frightful mystery who had given her a glimpse of a world of infinite chaos.
The trip to Greece was enchanting. From the window of the Theodakis’ private jet, Ambre admired Greece and its sublime city.
Happy and excited, she turned her head towards her fiancé.
They landed on the private runways of Athens airport.
The customs gates opened respectfully, thanks to her fiancé’s name and celebrity. Proud and happy to be at his side and to be the one chosen by this extraordinary man, Ambre raised her head proudly, smiling gracefully at the glances of envy and amazement she met along the way. The journalists were already present, cameras and tape recorders at the ready to memorialize the presence of their local star for the umpteenth time.
«Sorry, my love. This is going to take a while.
Ambre kissed him.
«Don’t worry, my love, I’ll soon get used to it. But I hope they don’t follow us all the way to Ilios,” she added teasingly.
«No, my darling,” Nicholas replied, amused.
Then pushing his fiancé into a deserted corridor, he asked her to wait for him there.
«It’ll only take a few minutes. Just enough time to let them take a few photos and answer a question or two, and then we’ll slip out of here to catch our boat, okay.
«I’ll do that.
«I’m sorry again for this setback, my darling.
«Not at all.
After a final kiss, Nicholas left her alone to face the flashbulbs.
More angry than she let on, Amber sighed and leaned back against the beige wall of the corridor, absent-mindedly playing with her engagement ring, a marvel whose band was made of white gold, and the stones, an enormous diamond encircled by emeralds. Amber had promised herself to keep it with her for the rest of her life.
Another door opened and men in expensive black suits stepped out.
Curious and intrigued, Amber watched them converse in a language she guessed to be Russian.
They walked slowly to another, larger door and disappeared inside.
Delighted to have found a little distraction, Amber watched them with interest, knowing full well that these people were part of the elite of high society, and that they must all be infinitely wealthy.
Thinking for a moment, she finally saw him.
Of them all, he was the most handsome and fascinating. The wealthiest too, no doubt. You could tell, just by the way the others behaved towards him, with total deference and almost palpable respect.
His magnificent black hair was slicked back, revealing an angular face of breathtaking beauty.
He wore a magnificent cashmere coat over a tailored three-piece suit. His haughty bearing and manner betrayed extraordinary nobility. He was extraordinary. But what struck me most about him were his eyes.
Eyes of a bewildering green that would have bewitched anyone. And so they did when they landed on the young girl, after their owner had sensed her insistent gaze.
“What splendor...” she thought immediately, believing her breath had stopped forever.
Fascinating, unfathomable eyes that called forth life’s most fabulous feelings.
Nonchalantly, the man undressed her with his gaze, missing no detail of her perfect body, now strangely weak, so weak.
At length, he admired the face, flushed with the wildest feelings, then moved down to the satin-smooth throat, then to the breasts, molded in a short-sleeved fuchsia-pink shirt. Trying in vain to fight this terrible feeling of possession, Ambre hid her breasts with trembling hands. A derisory, desperate gesture that only served to accentuate her assailant’s amused, ironic smile.
He then gazed down at the long, perfect legs that a short skirt showed freely. Amber had put it on to please her fiancé, as he had made it clear that he much preferred her in a short skirt or dress. But now, despite the obvious joy she’d given Nicholas by putting on this revealing outfit, the girl regretted it, or rather boldly strove to regret it.
Now leaning against the corridor wall, the stranger returned to Ambre’s face and, through this invisible caress, gave her a glimpse of vertiginous sensations.
The men accompanying him followed this quasi-erotic exchange in silence. Then, with an authoritarian gesture, he dismissed them. With no further concern for them, the stranger lifted himself off the wall and advanced towards Amber.
The latter was still helpless, her hands on her chest hardened with desire to the point of pain, watching as this enigmatic, domineering being approached her without her being able to make the slightest gesture.
The stranger stopped in front of Amber. So close that she could see her own languid reflection in his icy eyes. Slowly, confidently, he brushed his firm, elegant fingers across her cheek, down to her pointed chin, over her neck and finally stopped on her left breast, where her heart was beating.
«I...
«No, don’t say anything. These beats speak for you. People can lie. But the heart can’t. From the beginning.
