Song Wen was preparing to cast another Fireball Spell to finish off Tang Yinian completely.
Suddenly, he heard the sharp, piercing whistles of objects cutting through the air behind him. He spun around.
Thousands of arrows were raining down upon him.
It turned out that earlier that afternoon, Tang Yinian and his son had realized that Elder Jiyin's words were suspicious. They had gathered several hundred elite gang members, fully armored in iron, armed with long spears and bows, and placed them in ambush right outside the courtyard.
When the building suddenly exploded, these several hundred elites rushed into the courtyard and launched an attack on Song Wen.
At this moment, Tang Yinian also noticed the cloud of arrows filling the sky.
He burst into a maniacal laugh. "Little thief! I don't care how you managed to kill Jiyin, that has nothing to do with me. But you killed my son, and I will make you accompany him to the grave!"
Tang Yinian laughed like a madman, as if he could already see Song Wen buried beneath the volley of arrows.
These hundreds of elites were all martial artists who had cultivated inner Qi. They used heavy, iron-reinforced bows of immense power, capable of tearing a human body to shreds with a single shot.
Song Wen's techniques were clearly single-target attacks. There was no way he could escape unscathed from the onslaught of hundreds of elites.
Yet, looking at the incoming cloud of arrows, Song Wen did not panic at all. A Gale Talisman abruptly appeared in his hand.
He activated the talisman, and a violent tempest whipped up out of nowhere.
Clouds of dust and gravel rose as the gale howled.
The wind blew so hard that men could barely stand. The arrows were tossed about, instantly losing their trajectory and accuracy.
Only a few stray arrows managed to hit Song Wen, but their momentum was completely spent. They posed absolutely no threat to him while his Shield Spell was active.
At the same time, the howling wind caught the raging flames and spread them in all directions.
The wind fueled the fire!
Every tree in the courtyard caught fire, and even the medicinal fields were not spared. Most of the spiritual herbs Jiyin had painstakingly collected were destroyed in an instant, and the dense forest on the mountain behind the building caught fire as well.
The entire courtyard was transformed into a sea of flames.
Though the volley of arrows had failed to harm Song Wen, it gave Tang Yinian a chance to escape.
He seized the opportunity to pull away from Song Wen, fleeing wretchedly toward his elite gang members.
Once he reached the safety of his men, his desire for vengeance flared up again.
"Song Wen, you won't escape today no matter what! Today, this gang leader will slaughter an Immortal!"
"Bring up the eight-oxen crossbows!"
Ten massive siege crossbow carts were rolled forward. Each was loaded with ten pure steel spears that were as thick as a man's arm and a Zhang long, their tips gleaming with a chilling sharpness.
Several burly men strained against the mechanism, pulling back the heavy strings and raising the massive iron tips. The eight-oxen crossbows groaned with a spine-chilling screech.
"Fire!"
The ten crossbow carts discharged simultaneously. A hundred steel spears ripped through the air in unison, making a terrifying, deafening roar.
These spears were over a hundred times more powerful than the arrows from before.
The eight-oxen crossbow was a siege weapon utilized by the imperial military of the Qian Kingdom, capable of tearing down city walls and conquering strongholds. It was a mystery where Tang Yinian had managed to acquire so many of them.
"Let's see where you can run now!" Tang Yinian roared.
Facing a hundred Zhang-long steel spears, Song Wen did not dare to be careless. He could not guarantee that a Gale Talisman could deflect weapons of this weight, and he certainly was not going to risk using his Shield Spell to tank them head-on.
He immediately activated a Flight Talisman.
Song Wen felt his body grow weightless as he soared straight up into the sky. In the blink of an eye, he reached a height of thirty Zhang, completely out of the spears' trajectory.
The Flight Talisman was Song Wen's ultimate trump card, and the sole reason he had dared to act against Tang Liang in the first place. With it, he could disengage from any battle at will, coming and going as he pleased.
Without it, he would never have attempted an assassination inside the Heavenly Fiend Gang's headquarters; he would have chosen a far safer approach, biding his time outside to ambush them.
"It is impolite not to return a favor. Let's see how you handle my talismans."
Without a moment's hesitation, Song Wen unleashed two Fireball Talismans and another Gale Talisman.
Activating a talisman was vastly faster than casting a technique himself.
"He can fly?!"
Below, Tang Yinian and the Heavenly Fiend Gang members stared up in sheer horror. An enemy with the power of flight completely defied their expectations. Standing high in the air, Song Wen was practically invincible.
"Quick! Redirect the eight-oxen crossbows! Shoot him down!" Tang Yinian bellowed frantically.
Before they could even reposition the heavy siege carts, two massive fireballs plummeted from the sky.
The two fireballs slammed directly into two of the crossbow carts, blowing them to splinters.
The fireballs erupted, showering violent flames everywhere. More than a dozen nearby gang members were caught in the blast, instantly transformed into screaming torches.
Before the Heavenly Fiend Gang could catch their breath, a violent gale howled across the ground, making it impossible for the men to steady the remaining crossbow carts, let alone aim at Song Wen in the sky.
"Song Wen, you despicable coward! You call yourself an Immortal, yet you don't dare to face me head-on? You only know how to hide in the sky like a coward using talismans! Let's see how many talismans you have left! Once you run out, I will hack you into mincemeat!"
Tang Yinian roared in absolute frustration, watching his hundreds of men suffer continuous casualties without being able to touch a single hair on Song Wen's head.
High in the air, Song Wen smiled faintly. The Flight Talisman lasted for a full quarter of an hour; he had plenty of time to play with them.
"Face you head-on? Do you take me for an idiot? Taste my flame bombs!"
His supply of talismans was limited, but Song Wen had plenty of incendiary oil stored in his storage space-over a hundred one-Jin clay jars, to be exact.
Positioned high in the sky, Song Wen held absolute air superiority.
He rained the clay jars down like mortar shells, deliberately targeting the thickest crowds and the remaining eight crossbow carts.
The ground was already littered with scattered embers, and as the incendiary jars smashed open one after another, the residual winds of the Gale Talisman spread the liquid fire instantly.
The inferno in the courtyard grew so intense that there was barely a single patch of safe ground left.
Countless gang members thrashed and wailed in agony.
The night filled with a ceaseless chorus of shrieks and desperate cries.
Aside from a few men on the absolute outer periphery who managed to flee, the vast majority of the elites who had entered the courtyard were trapped, burning alive in the sea of fire.
Tang Yinian's injuries were severe, preventing him from escaping immediately, but he was surrounded by a small group of fiercely loyal subordinates.
A dozen men formed a tight wall around him, using their bodies and weapons to deflect the splashing liquid fire, keeping Tang Yinian alive for the moment.
However, as the seconds ticked by, his defenders were gradually consumed by the spreading flames, their numbers dwindling rapidly.
From mid-air, Song Wen kept his eyes locked onto Tang Yinian. Spotting a gap, he circulated his Magic Power and unleashed a Fireball Spell.
As the fist-sized fireball streaked toward him, Tang Yinian somehow grabbed a Zhang-long steel spear from the ground.
With a desperate thrust, he intercepted the incoming projectile.
The fireball exploded violently, showering sparks everywhere. The tip of the steel spear shattered into pieces from the impact.
Right at that moment, a clay jar slammed directly into the broken shaft of his spear.
Incendiary oil splashed everywhere, and a sheet of fire erupted. The flying oil drenched Tang Yinian, and the flames engulfed him in an instant.
"Ahhh... Aaagh!"
Tang Yinian turned into a living torch, shrieking in agonizing torment.
Song Wen silently kept track of the time in the air. Most of the Flight Talisman's duration had already elapsed.
It was time to go.
Controlling his movement, Song Wen flew toward the mountain behind the estate. Once he crossed the peak ahead, he would be completely clear of the Heavenly Fiend Gang's territory.
Before leaving, he emptied his remaining jars of incendiary oil from his Storage Bag, giving Tang Yinian and the remnants below a heavy final farewell.
