The golden afternoon sun had begun to set as the four companions sat discussing their mission in the large courtyard of the Crescent Hotel. Sheltered by the heavy timbers of the building, Mark Vance and his three friends ate the substantial meal that the hotel had provided. Despite the comforts of the establishment and the delicious food, a tense atmosphere hung heavily in the air.
The time for drinking and brawling was long past.
Leaning back in his chair, Mark traced lazy patterns over the table's grain with a calloused fingertip. "We fought through the dungeons of the lycanthropes' citadel and the horrors of the Unseen Oculus in the Northern Mire. Tell me, what awaits us tonight that requires we go to such lengths to encounter it in the depths of this hotel courtyard?" he asked darkly.
"A ghost, Mark," replied Diljeet, his voice low so as not to be overheard by other patrons in the hotel. Adjusting the straps on his gloves, he fixed the young leader with a grim stare. "Local legends claim that the spirit of a young woman who drowned twenty years ago has haunted this place's ancient pond for decades. If we're to deliver the woman from her ghostly bonds, we must first discern the manner of her passing. The question is- will the manner of her death lead us into equal peril?" he asked seriously.
"As a rule, Aethelgard is not a land where the living and dead cross paths often," remarked Ahmed, his fingers idly tracing shapes on the table's surface. His twin forearms were crossed over his broad chest as he regarded his companions. "Yet we are hardly inexperienced newcomers who blundered blindly into the caves. Can there be any among us who would not have fathomed the means to unmake such a thing as this spirit?" he asked with a touch of bravado. "If it comes to it, we will tear the truth from this ghost's lips, even if we must carve it from her bones!"
With that, the heavy afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, staining the evening sky with bruised purples and golds. The cheerful clamor of the hotel's dining hall grew hushed as its patrons departed for their evening rooms, none liking the uncanny chill that had crept into the air.
Come nightfall, Mark stood at the head of his assembled friends, giving them a curt nod. "See that your equipment is prepared."
One by one, the four adventurers fell to inspecting their arms and armor, checking over the runes inscribed upon them as the combat regulations dictated. Mark drew his great blade, the steel of the rare Holy Vanguard Greatblade glowing faintly with warm golden light as it banished the shadows from the room. Over his left arm, he fastened the fireproof runed aegis of Oakhaven; it hummed slightly with latent magic. Diljeet inspected his own great weapon, the plain dull iron sword, polishing the fuller on its heavy steel blade. At the same time, Ahmed checked the bindings on his balanced iron-tipped spear. Finally, the four friends made sure they had their inventory slots prepared, each retaining a potion of low-grade healing in case of an emergency.
The heavy meal that the hotel's cook had prepared for them had been rich in proteins and carbohydrates, all of which had been carefully selected to grant them maximum energy. As Mark fastened the steel buckles of his taskmaster's iron-plated boots, he sensed the familiar ringing chime in his skull, and the four adventurers' translucent blue systems appeared before their vision, displaying their current energy and power levels.

"Everyone is at full energy," muttered Mark, regarding the ever-moving clock cursor at the bottom of his field of vision. He gave a short nod. "Now- let us see this ghost, and be done with it."
With that, the four adventurers filed out through the heavy double doors of the Crescent Hotel, finding the evening air cool and pleasant. As they quietly walked through the damp courtyard, they approached the old hotel's edge, coming to a halt just before the dark water of the courtyard's ancient pond. There, the four warriors stood as silent sentinels, watching and waiting. For several long minutes, the atmosphere was absolutely still. Then- the air itself seemed to move.
The wind began to pick up, swirling wildly in frigid tight circles as it whipped through the leaves. Heavy clumps of silverwood leaves began to flurry downwards, hissing as they struck the dark water below. In the center of the pond, the water began to bubble furiously before erupting into thick wisps of pale violet mist. Slowly, the vapor began to condense, taking on a vaguely humanoid shape. By the time the ghostly figure had fully formed, the spectral woman's hollow eyes had taken on a sorrowful, forlorn quality. The time had come to speak with the spirit of Cassie.
Mark took a careful step forward, gesturing with his great sword in a calming manner. "Spirit- tell us what we must do so that you may pass into the next life," said Mark, his tactical interface already analyzing the entity's magical properties.
"Twenty years ago, a band of cruel and violent criminals came down from the ridges to the north," she replied in a weeping voice that seemed to echo right in the adventurers' skulls. "They wielded jagged knives, but these men were no men. Each had the towering rhino-like head of an animal of immense power, with the strong, thick bodies of men. They came as a mob, breaking through the village and taking many of our men and women, as well as children, away with them. Unfortunately for me, my husband and child were among the ones taken!" she cried.
"Tell us, spirit- where were they taken? Why have the village watchmen not pursued them?" asked Diljeet, his hand tightening around the hilt of his great weapon.
"They were servants to a far greater power," replied the spirit ghostly voice. "It is said that the criminal faction serves the most powerful of the Northern Jinn. This entity is one of nightmares, and one against whom I am powerless to stand, for his power is beyond comprehension. To battle him is to risk the very soul!" she warned.
"Tell us where his domain lies, spirit," said Diljeet, stepping forward until he loomed over the edge of the dark pond. "Tell us where we might find him."
"You must go north, along the village road, and follow it until it ends," she told them, her translucent arm pointing towards the distant mountain paths. "There, deep within the frozen crags, he makes his home in a great manor, which is ever-guarded by a massive creature and numerous guards wielding vicious weapons, which watch the great iron gate day and night."
Mark turned back to regard the spirit as his tactical interface overlaid a small minimap on his vision, marking the approximate location of the enemy base. "We will return to you, spirit. We will bring your loved ones home to you," he told her solemnly. "We will bring their remains, and see you free from this prison of sorrow."
With that, the spirit gave a long, sad sigh that sounded suspiciously like the rustling of silk. Her translucent form began to fade, flowing back into the dark waters of the pond before vanishing altogether.
With their equipment enchanted and buffed by their in-game systems, the four adventurers wasted no time departing for the Northern frontier. Turning their backs on the relative safety of the hotel, they began their approach to the enemy base. The trail was lonely and desolate, save for the unnatural fog that curled along the ground in sinister wisps.
Half a kilometer into their journey, Mark's Danger Sense suddenly warned him of approaching enemies. As his tactical interface painted red blinking dots on the approaching terrain, he quickly stopped his companions. "Hold. There is a shift in the composition ahead," he warned in a hushed voice.
Peering through the thick fog, the four adventurers could hear the heavy thudding of a pack of approaching creatures. As the moonlight pierced the thick canopy overhead, the pack of strange beasts emerged from the gloom. Each wielded cruel, jagged knives, and their thick, grey-skinned bodies bore the great, sweeping horns of a rhino. They advanced heavily, their massive tails lashing against the ground.
Ahmed took point, lowering the tip of his iron-tipped spear to adopt a standard battle stance. "Get ready, lads. Here they come!" he bellowed.
At his words, the pack of rhino-hybrids let loose with bloodcurdling cries, surging forward at an amazing speed. Lowering their heavy heads, they prepared to gore the four warriors with their great horns.
With a shout, Ahmed charged into the thick of the fray, meeting the first charging beast head-on. Diljeet's Guardian abilities activated, causing him to appear at the front of the pack as well. As the rhino-hybrids bore down on him, he used the mechanical advantage of the Iron Mirror Counter to slide inside the space created by their horns, delivering a heavy punch to the first creature's skull. The two warriors formed a wall of steel, engaging the beasts in a close-quarters fight.
"Ahmed, to the left! Execute the maneuvers!" called Mark.
Ahmed moved like a gust of wind, sidestepping the horns of a charging beast and hooking his spear around the creature's thick neck. With a powerful heft of his leg, he sent the rhino-hybrid crashing to the ground, and the others followed close behind. Mark joined in the fray, using the Flowing Willow Redirection to deflect a wide slashing strike meant for his ribs. Spinning on his heel, Mark executed his newly acquired area-of-effect skill, sending a crescent-shaped wave of golden energy across the battlefield to slash through the creatures' thick hides.
"Minor Cleave!" he yelled.
The blade of his Vanguard Greatblade pulsed with bright blue energy as it swept across the chests of three rhino-hybrids, cleaving through their tough hides. System notifications appeared in his peripheral vision, marking the progress of the battle and the falling enemy health bars.
Their blades slick with the black blood of the fallen, the frustrated rhino-hybrids growled and snarled, furiously slashing at Mark's group in wide arcs. However, they failed to realize that they were fighting seasoned warriors, each of whom had fought many battles with rare, enchanted weapons and months of practice with their respective combat styles.
"Finishing blows!" Mark called out, channeling his primary skill that granted him a significant burst of damage against a single enemy. "Heavy Strike!"
The great blade flared with bright blue mana as Mark brought it down across the skull of the lead rhino-hybrid, splitting it open from brow to temple. At the same time, Ahmed thrust his Iron-Tipped Spear through the neck of another creature while Diljeet delivered a powerful overhead strike with his dull iron sword. The four adventurers fought with a fury unknown to the beasts, finishing off the last of the hybrids with a single mighty blow from Ahmed's spear.
As the heavy bodies of the fallen crashed to the earth, dark gray ash-like wisps drifted from their twitching forms. System notifications appeared before Mark's eyes, signifying their victory over the enemies.

Mark wipes the black blood from his blade, heaving a quiet sigh. "They were only scouts," he muttered. "The mansion is near. We must hurry."
With renewed determination, the four adventurers pressed on into the night, heading into the deeper reaches of the frozen Northern frontier. Their journey led them through a narrow ravine in the rocky landscape when the strange fog suddenly lifted, revealing an expansive valley to their vision. In the center of this desolate expanse stood a single great manor of black stone. However, the sight that caught their eye was the great wall that surrounded the building. Atop this towering barricade stood a massive gate of solid Gold, which glowed faintly with dark, cursed energy from the twin moons overhead. This gate was no doubt the work of the Dark Lord himself.
The System appeared before Mark's eyes, a single waypoint marking the center of the great bars.
