The ground began to shake. I looked up at the tree that was supposed to be supporting my friend. The branch he was on... It had broken. My friend was on the grass, motionless.
“Khrome! No, no… Are you okay? Don’t leave me, Khrome!” I slid on my knees, bending over Khrome. I put my ear to his heart. Nothing. I felt a tear slide down my cheek, but I didn't wipe it away.
“Khrome, you’re so stupid. Why would you climb the tree during a freaking storm?!” I felt my throat throb at the end of my sentence. I screamed. I couldn’t be doing this again. Not again. I don’t need to hide who I truly am. Not anymore. Everyone was gone. I held Khrome’s hand and wept a little longer before I heard a groan. I looked around me, the purple storm getting worse. The sky was throwing lightning bolts in all directions. Where had that sound come from? I was going to go back to crying when I felt a little nudge on my hand.
“Khrome? Khrome! You’re alive! I need to get you to a doctor. Come on, Khrome. Just hold on a little bit longer,” I looked at him. His mouth twitched a little bit. Then he ripped a chain off of his neck. The chain had a small orb connected to it. It was absolutely beautiful. He handed me the chain with the spiraling orange orb and smiled to himself.
“I’m finally… Free.” I looked at the orb in my hand. The glowy orange ball evoked many feelings in me. The many feelings I wish I had never been born with. I hugged Khrome with all the strength I had left and kissed him on the forehead.
“I love you…” I held him against me like a pillow. I heard him chuckle and I frowned. “What?” I pulled away to search his face, and all I caught was the faintest smile.
“I didn’t know you were gay, Landus.” He wheezed, and I began to hug him again.
“Shut up. I’m not.” I looked at him one more time. His blonde, messy hair flowing in the crazy wind. His blue eyes, looking greyer than ever. His freckled face, wanting to be free of this horrid world. Slowly, he wraps the chain around my neck. It's his necklace. The necklace that he got from his aunt. I didn't want to take it, but I let him put it on me. As soon as I hear a little click coming from the back of my neck, Khrome wraps his arms around me, and we fly upwards, turning upside-down while I'm at it. He laughs his signature bubbly thing, and I close my eyes shut, smiling.
Time: Monday, July 3rd, Year ████, 3:16 A.M.
Setting: Bedroom.
I jolted upwards, feeling the worst pain ever in my back. I looked around—my bedroom. I let out a sigh of relief. It was just a dream. No, not a dream. A nightmare. I shook off that uneasy feeling and reached over my arm to massage my shoulder. Before I felt my shoulder, I felt something cold. And that was when I noticed a heavy weight on my chest. I looked down and saw a chain around my neck. It was sort of like a necklace. It was beautiful. It's sliver chains held an orange orb with pinkish swirls in it, sort of like a marble. Wait. An orange orb? Like from my dream? I flinched, trying to think of a logical explanation for this. I reached behind my neck to feel for the part where it connects, but I didn't feel any. I tried to take it off in any way I could think of, but I just couldn't.
I sat up in a comfortable position before reaching for my cell phone. 3:16 A.M. I blinked at the bright screen. I tried to go back to sleep. The world spun. Too fast. Way too fast. I got flung against the ceiling faster than I ever believed could go. I winced. My elbow stung. I closed my eyes, ready to fall back down, but I didn't. I opened one eye at a time. I was on the ceiling. Just lying on the ceiling. It was as if the whole world was upside-down. But it couldn't have been. Gravity was still working. My shoulder-length black hair was going up (or down, if you were right-side up), and so were my clothes, but my body stayed put.
I pushed myself to my feet. Nothing happened. It was as if I was on the floor, but I wasn't. I tried jumping. It didn't work. I plopped back down on my back, defeated. I wasn't getting back to normal any time soon. I thought for a moment. Is this why Khrome said he was free? He didn't want the magical powers that the necklace came with. It imprisoned him. A cold dread pooled in my stomach. If the necklace had trapped Khrome… what was it going to do to me?
Landus? Can you hear me? I paused. I felt Khrome's words bang in my head.
"Khrome? Khrome! Are you alive?" I looked around, trying to find him. He was nowhere to be found.
No... I'm not present. I'm here to guide you.
"What? Guide me?"
Yes... This is only the beginning, Landus.
"What do you mean?" I looked around the room for a second time to double check. Was he really in my head?
This isn't a dream.
