The wind atop the massive radio tower didn't just blow; it screamed. Freezing rain pelted Julius’s face like tiny needles as he crawled along the narrow, trembling steel gantry, hundreds of feet above the blurred neon grid of the city.
Below him, leaning heavily against the structural lattice, Belinda was slipping away. Her eyes were wide, glassy, and fixed on nothing. Her lips moved silently, forming words that didn't belong to her, her hands stiffening into claws. The Shadow King's signal was broadcasting straight into her mind from the tower's main transmitter, methodically purging who she was.
"Hang on, Belinda!" Julius shouted into the gale, his voice instantly torn away by the wind.
He couldn't fight a physical entity, but he could fight a frequency.
With numb, bleeding fingers, Julius tore open the tower’s primary junction box. Sparks flew into the dark as he ripped away the thick, armored industrial cables. Balancing his portable audio mixer on the wet steel beam, he pulled the heavy broadcast microphone from his pack. He didn't have time for a clean splice. He bared the copper wires with his teeth, tasting copper and bitter static, and jammed them directly into the tower’s outbound feed.
He was going to inject his own voice into the transmission loop, creating a phase-canceling wave to break the King’s hold on Belinda.
Julius flicked the mixer’s toggle switch. The LEDs flared a violent, dangerous red. He grabbed the microphone, pressing it close to his lips to shield it from the wind.
"Belinda, listen to my voice!" Julius roared into the mic, forcing every ounce of conviction he possessed into the vocal cords. "Your name is Belinda Salvador! You are an investigator! You found the Red Ink Ledger! Don't let him rewrite you!"
Through the monitors, Julius heard his own voice blast across the local frequency, clashing violently with the oppressive, rhythmic thump-thump of the Shadow King’s carrier wave. For a second, it worked. Belinda gasped, her body jerking violently as the glassy film over her eyes fractured.
"Julius..." she choked out, her fingers tightening around the cold steel railing.
But the reprieve was brutally short.
A sudden, agonizing spike of pure electronic feedback ripped through Julius’s headphones, tearing a scream from his throat. The radio tower around them seemed to vibrate with a deeper, furious energy. The air grew thick, tasting of ozone and burnt insulation.
The Shadow King wasn't just broadcasting anymore; he was pushing back through the wire.
The green and red waves on Julius's portable monitor violently collided, twisting into a jagged, suffocating spiral. Julius fought to keep speaking, to maintain his counter-frequency, but the sheer pressure of the King’s wave slammed into his frontal lobe like a physical freight train. His knees buckled, his hands slipping from the mixing board as he collapsed onto the icy metal grating.
The world didn't go dark. It went violently, blindingly white.
Suddenly, the freezing wind and the high-altitude gantry vanished. Julius was no longer on the radio tower. He was standing inside a vivid, waking hallucination, trapped inside a rush of memories that didn't belong to him.
He was experiencing the birth of the Shadow King.
He saw a man sitting in the center of a room, strapped into a chair, surrounded by towering racks of experimental acoustic hardware. The man was weeping, consumed by a crushing, unexpressed grief over a loss so profound it tore at Julius's own chest. Powerful sub-woofers blasted a low-frequency sonic wave through the man’s body, vibrating his very cells, trying to map human consciousness onto an audio loop.
Julius watched in horror as the experiment went catastrophically wrong. The frequencies didn't map the mind; they shattered it, dissolving the man’s physical form into a localized anomaly of pure, rogue bio-electric data. The birth of the virus.
But as the phantom memory began to fade and the white light fractured, Julius’s eyes locked onto the background of the laboratory.
He recognized the matte-black acoustic foam on the walls. He recognized the custom-built mixing console, the exact placement of the isolation booths, and the distinctive brass trim on the master monitors.
It wasn't a secret government facility. It wasn't a dark-web safehouse.
It was his own high-end audio-restoration lab. The very place he spent every single day.
Before Julius could process the reality-shattering revelation, the hallucination snapped. He was slammed back into his physical body on the freezing gantry, gasping for air, rain pouring into his open mouth.
He blinked through the water, looking up to find Belinda.
She was standing perfectly straight now, the wind whipping her messy hair across her face. She wasn't trembling anymore. Slowly, she turned her head to look down at him.
Her eyes were completely gone, replaced by solid, glowing rings of deep, synthetic violet. She smiled a serene, terrifyingly familiar smile, and when she spoke, the voice that tore through the howling storm was the raspy, dual-toned whisper of the entity itself.
"Thank you for the memory, Julius," the thing using Belinda's mouth hissed. "I was wondering when you'd remember you built me."
