For as long as Maya could remember, her thoughts had remained exactly where thoughts belonged.

Inside her head.

Until Tuesday.

She was halfway through brushing her teeth when a voice yawned.

𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. 𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.

Maya nearly swallowed her toothbrush.

"What was that?"

The rest arrived all at once.

𝘞𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥'𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘵.

𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.

By lunchtime, Maya had accepted two things.

First, her thoughts had somehow found voices.

Second, they talked far too much.

Most were harmless. Some were hilarious. One spent ten minutes wondering whether pigeons secretly judged humans.

But there was one thought she never heard.

The one she'd buried years ago.

That evening, she sat alone on the swing in the park where she and her father used to watch sunsets before he passed away.

The silence felt... familiar.

Then, softly, another voice spoke.

One she hadn't heard in years.

There was no one.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I didn't forget."

The voice sounded almost like a smile.

𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳.

For the first time in years, Maya laughed at one of her father's terrible jokes in her memory.

Then she cried.

When she finally stood to leave, the voices in her head had grown quiet.

All except one.
