The voice on the other end of the line remained silent for a moment.
“If it weren't risky, why would it carry such a price?” it replied. “A price that was enough to make you jump.”
“But try to understand. Things here have suddenly changed. I won't be as immune to suspicion as I might have been just a week ago.”
“Oh...” The voice became almost thoughtful. “So you've already done or said something that's made you vulnerable to suspicion.”
There was a brief silence.
“So, in other words, you're telling us that you may not be able to follow our instructions.”
“I'm afraid... that's correct.”
Another pause.
“All right. We decided to lead you towards the threshold of something far greater—something that could secure your generation's future.”
The voice hardened slightly.
“But if you're faltering before you've even taken the first step...”
A pause.
“Then whatever follows will be your responsibility.”
Before the line could go dead, a hasty voice came through.
“No... no. I mean... I haven't done this before.”
He hesitated.
“Not exclusively for someone. I just... I need some time, perhaps.”
The voice on the other end remained remarkably calm.
“We're asking you to extract simple information, monitor certain movements, report certain activities. That's all.”
A brief pause.
“Clean. Safe. And yet you sound as though we've asked you to do something gruesome.”
The voice softened almost reassuringly.
“We're decent people ourselves.”
Another pause.
“And that advance we already paid you...” The tone became slightly more pointed. “I assume you've invested it somewhere by now.”
Silence.
“Will you be able to return it—with interest—before nightfall?”
“No... I mean... how will I?”
“Exactly.”
A short silence followed.
“Then it's settled.”
The voice became coldly matter-of-fact.
“Work as directed.”
After the line went dead, he remained still for a moment, then began working out an action plan.
Risky? Certainly. Highly risky.
But he would find a way.
Somehow, he would find the means to make it work.
