It was 9:30 when Ahad and Noor Ain headed towards the elevators on the management floor.

Both assumed there was no one there besides the two security officers.

But they were wrong.

There was someone else.

Someone who had been noticing their movements...

Even the time they were leaving the floor.

As the elevator descended eight floors, Noor Ain suddenly spoke.

“I feel there was someone... or something... on the floor that shouldn't have been there.”

Abdul Ahad, who had just shifted his bag to his other shoulder, almost stiffened.

“Ma'am... are you speaking to me?”

Noor Ain nodded.

“Yes.”

She hesitated.

“I felt...”

Her voice trailed off.

Then she looked at him.

“Did you hear what I said earlier?”

Ahad nodded uncertainly.

“Not really. I just thought you were saying something.”

“Oh...”

Noor Ain inhaled softly.

Then, as though deciding not to pursue the subject, she looked towards the elevator doors.

“Finally... heading home after a long day.”

Abdul Ahad smiled courteously.

“It was a long day indeed.”

Neither spoke again.

The elevator continued its quiet descent, carrying them through the eight floors until the doors finally opened at the ground floor.

It was eleven o’clock.

Ali lay awake, his mind drifting back over the events of the day at the firm.

What a day it had been...

Sajjad... why am I getting the feeling that a bug has somehow entered your system?

His mind drifted towards another person.

Noor Ain...

Her system keeps showing glitches.

Ali smiled faintly.

But I guess today, those glitches weren't as pronounced.

They didn't lead to a system shutdown, at least.

He thought about the way she had worked beside him, calmly simplifying the technical details while he entered the data into the software.

She was fully functional today.

The thought made him smile again.

Maybe that's progress.

Noor Ain found herself smiling.

She stopped.

Am I really smiling?

She looked at her reflection in the marble dresser mirror.

For a moment, she simply stared at herself.

Perhaps because... because...

She couldn't complete the thought.

But I have no answer.

Her smile returned, almost involuntarily.

I guess now I have a reason to smile.

He has given me a reason to smile... to feel myself... to feel unrestrained... to feel...

She stopped again.

To feel that even I can feel.

Her expression slowly changed.

But what am I feeling now?

His hands...

His fingers...

Those eyes...

That smile...

No.

She shook her head faintly.

I am not feeling anything.

I can only sense certain presences... certain energies.

I cannot feel emotions.

Her fingers instinctively moved towards the gold pendant at her neck.

I must not.

She looked at herself again.

The smile was gone.

She finally moved towards her bed.

As she lay down, she felt moisture on her cheeks.

She touched them and looked at her fingertips.

Tears?

She wiped them away quickly.

I cannot let anything like that overpower me.

Her eyes remained fixed on the ceiling.

I am a medium.

A pause.

And mediums are just... mediums.

She closed her eyes.

We are different.

And because we are different, we can never afford to let emotions like these flourish.

Her fingers tightened around the pendant.

Because if we allow them to grow... they can affect the people on the receiving end of our emotions.

Her thoughts drifted towards her parents.

Look at Ammi and Baba.

A strange sadness settled over her.

All these years I've been with them, their lives have slowly turned into duty... responsibility...

They've forgotten that they have lives of their own.

She opened her eyes again.

And for the first time that night, she wondered whether protecting others from herself had also meant keeping herself from ever truly living.
