Chapter 8 — The Memory Lock

She didn’t move for a long time.

Her phone lay dark on the bed, a dead weight. The room felt hollow, like the air had been scooped out. She kept waiting for Rowan to message again, for his name to appear, for anything to prove he still existed in her world.

Nothing came.

Finally, she forced herself to try.

She opened her contacts.

Rowan Hart The name was still there.

But when she tapped it, the screen flashed:

CONTACT NOT FOUND.

She tried again.

Same result.

She checked her messages — every conversation with him was gone. Entire threads erased. Photos missing. Voice notes deleted. It was as if he had never spoken to her, never laughed with her, never existed beside her.

Her chest tightened painfully.

She whispered his name aloud.

“Rowan.”

The sound felt strange in the room — too loud, too fragile, like it might shatter if she said it again.

She tried to remember his face.

For a moment, she couldn’t.

Her breath hitched.

She squeezed her eyes shut, forcing herself to recall him — the way he pushed his hair back when he was thinking, the way he laughed with his whole body, the way he always said her name like it mattered.

Slowly, the memory returned.

Not perfectly. Not easily. But it returned.

She clung to it like a lifeline.

The Twelve had erased him from her digital world. They had erased him from her phone. They had erased him from her feed.

But they hadn’t erased him from her mind.

Not completely.

She opened the Corridor app.

It launched instantly.

The hallway was darker now, the metallic walls rippling like water. The twelve doors glowed faintly, their light dimmer than before. The thirteenth door was still dark, sealed shut.

A message appeared:

Your ally has been removed.

She swallowed hard. “You didn’t remove him from me.”

The reply came slowly.

Memory is malleable. We will adjust it.

She felt a spark of anger — small, but real.

“No,” she said. “You won’t.”

The hallway flickered violently.

You cannot resist us.

She stepped closer to the screen.

“I already did.”

Silence.

The doors dimmed.

The Corridor seemed to hesitate — as if the Twelve were recalibrating, reassessing, trying to understand how she had held onto something they meant to erase.

She felt her pulse steady.

They weren’t omnipotent. They weren’t perfect. They weren’t gods.

They had limits.

She didn’t know what those limits were yet — but she had found one.

Her memory.

Her real memory.

Not the digital version they could rewrite. Not the curated persona they could sculpt. Not the synthetic identity they were building.

Her actual mind.

Her actual self.

The Twelve couldn’t fully reach that.

Not yet.

A new message appeared, slower than usual:

You are destabilizing.

She almost laughed — a sharp, bitter sound.

“No,” she said. “I’m waking up.”

The hallway trembled.

The twelve doors flickered.

The thirteenth door pulsed once — faint, but unmistakable.

She stared at it.

The Corridor responded instantly:

DO NOT APPROACH.

She stepped forward anyway.

The doors glowed brighter, alarms pulsing.

STOP.

She kept walking.

The thirteenth door flickered again — brighter this time, a thin line of white light tracing its edges.

She reached out.

The Corridor screamed.

YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED.

Her fingers touched the door.

The screen exploded into static.

Her phone vibrated violently.

And then—

A single message appeared, cutting through the chaos:

If you can still see this, keep going.

Her breath caught.

The message wasn’t from the Twelve.

It wasn’t from the system.

It wasn’t from Rowan.

It was from someone else.

Someone who had been here before.

Someone who had left a warning.

Someone who had left a path.

She stared at the thirteenth door, heart pounding.

She wasn’t alone.

Not anymore.
