CHAPTER 16 — THE COST

The observatory shook around her.

Not from the wind. Not from the mountain. From the machine inside it— the Unmaking Pulse— a device designed to erase emotion itself.

She stood with the boy’s small hand gripping hers, both of them trembling as the pulse roared again, a cold wave that scraped across her sphere like claws made of static.

Her anchors flickered.

Gold comfort dimmed. Blue hope cracked. Red anger sputtered.

She felt herself slipping.

The boy squeezed her hand harder. “Don’t let go.”

She swallowed. “I’m trying.”

Another pulse hit.

Her knees buckled. Her breath shattered. Her sphere flickered dangerously.

The boy cried out, collapsing beside her. “It hurts.”

She pulled him close, shielding him with her body. “I know. I know.”

The pulse intensified.

Her sphere dimmed to a faint glow—barely alive.

She felt her emotions draining again— fear dissolving, anger fading, hope thinning into nothing.

She whispered, “Stop… please…”

The machine didn’t listen.

It pulsed again.

Her vision blurred. Her thoughts slowed. Her anchors flickered like dying stars.

She felt herself slipping into numbness— into emptiness— into the cold void the machine wanted to create.

The boy’s voice cracked beside her. “Help me…”

Her sphere flickered.

A spark.

A heartbeat.

She inhaled sharply.

“No,” she whispered. “Not again.”

She forced herself upright, pulling the boy with her. Her legs shook violently, but she stood.

The machine pulsed.

She pushed back.

Her sphere ignited—weak, fragile, but alive.

Gold comfort flared. Blue hope surged. Red anger blazed.

She screamed.

The pulse hit her full force.

Her sphere cracked.

Her anchors strained.

Her body shook violently.

But she didn’t fall.

She pushed harder.

Her sphere blazed brighter—gold, blue, red—colors intertwining, forming a shield around her and the boy.

The pulse slammed into it.

The shield held.

Barely.

The machine groaned, its metal frame warping under the strain. Sparks shot from its conduits. The dome above them trembled.

The boy stared at her, eyes wide. “You’re stopping it.”

“No,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’m resisting it.”

The pulse intensified.

Her sphere screamed.

Her anchors flickered violently.

Gold comfort cracked. Blue hope dimmed. Red anger blazed too hot.

She felt something inside her tear.

A sharp, burning pain shot through her chest— not physical, not emotional, something deeper.

Her sphere fractured.

She gasped, collapsing to one knee.

The boy grabbed her arm. “Don’t stop!”

“I—can’t—”

“Yes you can!”

She looked at him—this child who had been unmade and remade by her field—and something inside her shifted.

Not comfort. Not hope. Not anger.

Something new.

Something fierce.

Something ancient.

A fourth anchor.

It ignited inside her chest— white, blinding, pure.

Resolve.

Her sphere exploded with light.

The pulse shattered.

The machine screamed, metal twisting, wires snapping, conduits bursting into sparks. The dome cracked, sending shards of glass raining down around them.

The boy shielded his face.

She stood, sphere blazing white, gold, blue, and red swirling around it like orbiting stars.

The Unmaking Pulse collapsed inward, folding like a dying star, then—

Silence.

The machine died.

The observatory stilled.

The boy stared at her, trembling. “You… you did it.”

She exhaled shakily. “I didn’t stop it. I broke it.”

Her sphere pulsed—white resolve burning at its core.

But something felt wrong.

Her breath hitched.

Her knees buckled.

She collapsed to the floor, clutching her chest.

The boy rushed to her. “What’s happening?”

She gasped. “The cost.”

Her sphere flickered violently—colors dimming, anchors straining.

Gold comfort cracked. Blue hope sputtered. Red anger faded. White resolve trembled.

She felt her emotional field tearing— too much strain, too much pressure, too much power.

She whispered, “I broke the Pulse… but it broke me too.”

The boy grabbed her shoulders. “Don’t die.”

She forced a weak smile. “I’m not dying.”

Her sphere flickered again.

“I’m changing.”

The boy’s eyes widened. “Into what?”

She looked toward the shattered machine.

Toward the cracked dome.

Toward the sky beyond.

And whispered:

“I don’t know.”

But she could feel it— deep, quiet, undeniable.

Breaking the Pulse had awakened something inside her.

Something the universe had been waiting for.

Something Veylor feared.

Something the Collective whispered about.

Something she wasn’t ready to face.

But would have to.

Because far below the mountain, in the dark heart of the Veylor Institute, alarms were already sounding.

The Pulse was gone.

The Balancekeeper had awakened.
