It’s that time of year again when skeletons, zombies, ghosts, and other monsters start appearing on the streets. People will decorate their homes with fake spiderwebs and carved pumpkins, and a mysterious, spooky atmosphere will descend on this small, peaceful town in the American South.

For Bill, however, this is an even more terrifying time of year than anyone could imagine. As winter approaches, “those” birds begin to flock to the town. Supposedly, it’s because winters are milder down here in the South, but Bill knows they’re migrating so they can terrorize more people.

Back when he was still working as a sailor on fishing boats, he used to hear all sorts of stories in the harbor bars—stories about how these birds are the devil’s messengers.

One such story was about a tragedy on the Blue Clam. When the ship had been at sea for several days, a duck suddenly landed on the mast out of the blue. It was strange, because it was the only bird for miles around. And this duck was half-plucked and visibly sick. Where its feathers had fallen out, festering sores were visible. A dark, thick fluid dripped from its beak. But the strangest thing about it was its eyes; it watched all the sailors with a piercing, hostile gaze, as if judging them all. Before it flew away, it made a sound that didn’t resemble any duck’s call but rather a human scream. That very night, a massive storm suddenly struck, capsizing the ship; of the 37 crew members, only one survived. He reportedly still remembered that terrifying duck’s scream to this day.

Bill wasn’t foolish enough to believe everything people said at the bar, and he thought this story, too, was just the product of a rum-fueled imagination. Soon after he retired, however, he discovered that the story might not have been entirely made up.

Bill loved fishing, and he kept up this hobby even after he hung up his boots from working on fishing boats and decided to retire. He loved the peace and quiet and the wilderness of fishing. One day, he was fishing at his favorite spot, about an hour’s drive outside of town. After a few hours, his fish basket was still empty, so he just sat there sipping a beer.

Suddenly, he got this strange feeling that someone was watching him. He looked around in all directions, but there was no one there. 99Please respect copyright.PENANAj7qWZ7exLV

Without wanting to admit it, a note of nervousness crept into his voice. He got no answer, but he broke out in goosebumps as he realized there was absolute silence all around him. Just a moment ago, he could hear birds chirping, frogs croaking, and leaves rustling—and suddenly, nothing. It was as if the animals had sensed the presence of a predator and had gone into hiding. Bill was overcome with fear, because he had the feeling that something was watching him and that he was in some kind of indescribable danger. He noticed movement on the other side of the pond in the reeds, about 20 meters away.

Bill didn’t make a sound and waited to see what would happen. A duck slowly and almost effortlessly emerged from the reeds. But this wasn’t just any ordinary duck—the sailor shirt and blue cap didn’t lie—it was Donald Duck. The moment he saw him, he felt relieved and almost started to laugh. Someone had dressed the duck in a sailor’s outfit. But his amusement quickly faded; something was wrong, and he could sense it. Every muscle in his body was screaming at him to jump up and run to his car as fast as he could.

There was something ominous about that duck, and then it dawned on him. The duck was smiling, and a terrifying glint shone in its eyes. Bill had never seen a bird smile before—he didn’t even know it was physically possible—but this one was definitely smiling. And it wasn’t a pleasant smile, but rather a sneer full of malice that concealed terrifying intentions.99Please respect copyright.PENANAGvLiabO55V

The duck slowly approached, never taking its eyes off Bill. His heart was pounding like crazy; he could even feel his pulse at his temples. He knew he should run away, but he couldn’t—he was frozen to his fishing chair.99Please respect copyright.PENANAe5YEaCJkbc

When Donald was almost upon Bill, he let out a hoarse laugh and then spoke.
“You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this moment.”99Please respect copyright.PENANAeDbvbfcENr
He spoke in Donald Duck's voice, but it was full of malice.
“You know, I’ve been watching you for a while now, and I have to say I don’t like what I see at all.” Donald said, and Bill felt as if the duck’s eyes were burning into him with a contemptuous glare.
“Do you know why I’m here?” the duck waited a moment.
“So, are you going to say something, or are you just going to sit there?”99Please respect copyright.PENANACYj3x4DDR1
Bill wanted to say something, but it was as if his throat were clamped in a massive vice of fear.
“Man, you guys are all exactly the same.” Donald snorted.
“You act like saints and think no one sees through you. But I see it—I’m watching you.”
“Let me refresh your memory a bit, Bill—last Thursday.”
Bill tried to remember, but he hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary last Thursday. He’d gone shopping that morning and then had lunch with a friend.
“It's getting warmer, Bill, it’s getting warmer —what did you have for lunch?”
It dawned on Bill, and if he hadn’t already been sitting, he would have sat down.
“Peking duck,” he whispered.
“Bingo! See, you’re not completely senile yet—you still remember something,” the duck laughed triumphantly, revealing a mouthful of dirty, sharp teeth.99Please respect copyright.PENANA1g3LJRcfKm

The duck moved closer and patted him on the cheek with his wing while clacking his teeth menacingly.
“But don’t worry, Bill, I’m not going to eat you today. I just want you to know that I’ll be watching you, and someday, when you least expect it, I’ll come for you. Got it?”
All Bill could manage was a slight nod.
“I’m glad we understand each other. See you later.” said Donald the duck, as if he hadn’t just threatened to eat someone, and swam away.99Please respect copyright.PENANAoVcbPdLCQS

Bill sat there for a while longer, trying to calm down and process what had just happened.

A few years later, Donald Duck found anger management classes and learned to forgive. He and Bill became friends and even went fishing together.99Please respect copyright.PENANADKliAyWXtv
