The Ghost Who Failed Scaring School

At exactly 12:00 a.m., my bedroom door creaked open.

"Creeeeak..."

I pulled my blanket over my head.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Thump... thump... thump...

I peeked out.

A pale ghost floated into my room wearing a black cape.

"BE AFRAID!" it shouted.

Instead of screaming, I blinked.

"Are you... reading from cue cards?"

The ghost quickly hid a stack of flashcards behind its back.

"No."

A card slipped onto the floor.

Lesson 3: Evil Laugh – 'Mwahahaha!'

I stared.

"You go to ghost school?"

The ghost sighed dramatically.

"It's my final exam. I have to make one human scream or I'll fail."

I almost felt sorry for it.

"Okay," I said. "Try again."

The ghost switched off my fan.

Nothing.

It rattled my window.

Still nothing.

It floated upside down from the ceiling.

I yawned.

The ghost looked ready to cry.

"This is impossible!"

Then it spotted my wardrobe.

"I know!"

It jumped inside.

Five seconds later...

"HELP!"

"What now?"

"I think... there's a spider in here."

"You... you're afraid of spiders?"

"It has eight legs! I only have zero!"

I laughed so hard I nearly fell off the bed.

The ghost burst out of the wardrobe wearing one of my hoodies.

"I surrender. Can you remove it?"

I caught the tiny spider in a cup and released it outside.

The ghost wiped imaginary sweat from its forehead.

"You saved my afterlife."

Suddenly, another ghost floated through the wall carrying a clipboard.

"Exam results!"

The first ghost stood nervously.

"Did I pass?"

The examiner checked the paper.

"You failed at scaring..."

The ghost hung its head.

"...but you scored full marks in comedy."

The examiner handed it a golden certificate.

The ghost grinned.

"That's even better!"

Before leaving, it looked at me.

"Same time tomorrow?"

"Only if you bring snacks."

Ghosts can haunt houses.
