The cycle of fear kept repeating—every teacher was replaced as soon as they gave up, unable to teach, only able to punish.

Then, one teacher arrived from the neighborhood, chosen by her grandmother. This teacher was known for her skill; all the other children in the neighborhood thrived under her guidance. But the rumors terrified her. People whispered that she was harsh—that she grabbed children by the ears, twisted them, and hit them with heavy sticks. The other kids mocked her. Each day, the fear weighed on her chest; she was convinced she was worthless, always behind, always compared to the neighbor’s child, who seemed perfect. Whenever someone asked her a question, she ran—fleeing to the bathroom, to the kitchen, anything to avoid the humiliation of failure.

But something slowly began to change. Though the fear was planted deep, a tiny spark of determination grew. She began to understand that the only way out of that cycle was to keep trying. As time passed, she began to do better, to taste small victories. But just as things were looking up, the pandemic struck. COVID-19 forced her to stay home, away from school, and the progress she made began to slip. The teacher, who had once been a guiding light, left as she got married and found a new job. The brother tried to help for a month, but he struggled to keep up, and so, once again, she was left adrift, unsure if she would ever catch up to her dreams.
