Summer vacation arrived.

Without school...

I saw Narin less often.

But whenever he visited his uncle's house, he would send me a message.

"Are you free today?"

Most of the time...

I was.

One warm afternoon, I arrived at his uncle's house carrying a bag of snacks.

Narin opened the door with his usual smile.

"You actually brought food."

"Your aunt said not to come empty-handed."

He laughed.

"She's going to like you even more now."

Inside, everyone welcomed me warmly.

It felt less like visiting someone else's family...

And more like visiting relatives of my own.

Korn was helping his uncle repair an old bicycle in the yard.

When he noticed me, he smiled.

"Hi, Phawin."

"Hi, Korn."

"You came."

"Narin invited me."

"I know."

He nodded with a small smile.

"I'm glad you did."

Later that afternoon, Narin's aunt asked us to buy a few things from a nearby convenience store.

"Narin, Korn, take Phawin with you."

The three of us walked through the quiet streets together.

Narin led the way, talking about random things as always.

Korn walked beside me.

Most of the time, we listened to Narin's endless stories.

Occasionally, Korn would quietly ask,

"How are your exams?"

"They went well."

"That's good."

Simple conversations.

Nothing unusual.

On the way back, Narin suddenly remembered something.

"Oh no..."

"I forgot to buy batteries."

He looked at us.

"You two go ahead."

"I'll be back in five minutes."

Before either of us could answer, he ran back toward the store.

Korn and I looked at each other.

"He really forgets everything," I said.

Korn laughed.

"He's been like that since we were kids."

We continued walking slowly.

The street was peaceful.

Neither of us felt the need to rush.

After a few moments, Korn spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Why are you always so kind to everyone?"

I looked at him, surprised.

"I don't know."

"I've never thought about it."

He smiled.

"I have."

"You make people feel important."

Even when you don't realize you're doing it."

For a moment...

I didn't know what to say.

No one had ever described me that way.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

Korn nodded.

"You don't have to thank me."

"I'm only telling the truth."

In the distance, Narin came running toward us, waving a small packet of batteries.

"I found them!"

Korn smiled as if nothing had happened.

"So..."

He thought.

"That's enough."

He had promised himself he would keep his feelings hidden.

And he would.

Even if it meant carrying that secret alone.

For now...
