They started with the garage.

Because everything started with the garage now.

The Sonion lay in its familiar half-collapse, an ecosystem of wood and intent. The spheres were mostly accounted for—clustered in a rough parade, wedged in corners, one under the workbench that Arthur had stopped pretending he didn’t know about.

Arthur counted.

One indigo.

One ochre.

Two indigo.

Two ochre.

He counted until his mind quieted.

J watched him with the affectionate patience of someone witnessing a ritual.

“Twenty-three,” Arthur said.

J blinked.

“What?”

Arthur looked at him.

“Twenty-three,” he repeated. “There were twenty-four.”

J’s grin faltered.

“Oh,” he said, and the word carried an entire season of consequences.

Arthur’s hum sharpened.

The difference between mostly and all.

Arthur crouched.

He looked at the Sonion’s wooden tracks.

At the cardboard tunnel.

“Get the ladder,” he said.

Arthur looked at him.

J shut up.

But Arthur could feel her presence anyway—in the idea of being watched.
