The Twin Who Lived: Secrets of the Serpent - The Night the Houses Shared the Same Sky

The Great Hall blazed with golden candlelight.

Thousands of enchanted candles floated beneath the enchanted ceiling, their reflections dancing across polished goblets and silver plates. The night sky above shimmered with stars, mirroring the heavens beyond the castle walls. First-year students stood gathered before the staff table, nervous excitement radiating from them in waves. Some clutched their robes. Others whispered anxiously to one another. The older students watched from their house tables with varying degrees of interest. The familiar sounds of conversation, laughter, and anticipation filled the enormous chamber. At the front of the hall, the ancient Sorting Hat had just concluded its annual song. Its final note faded into the air, and a heartbeat later the hall erupted into applause.

The applause rolled like thunder through the castle.

Professor McGonagall stood beside the sorting stool, waiting patiently for the noise to settle. Dumbledore smiled warmly from the center of the staff table, his eyes twinkling behind half-moon spectacles. Professor Flitwick applauded enthusiastically. Professor Sprout beamed at the gathered first-years. Even Snape offered a single polite clap before returning to his usual composed expression. Across the hall, dozens of Snitch Cameras floated quietly near the ceiling. Their tiny golden wings fluttered softly as they recorded the ceremony for families and friends watching from afar. The magical devices reflected candlelight like tiny stars. Many students barely noticed them anymore. They had become one of Mira Silverthorne's most beloved inventions.

Mira sat calmly at the Slytherin table.

At least outwardly.

Inside, she was trying very hard not to smile.

The idea had come to her during the train ride.

A small celebration.

A reminder.

Something to make every house feel proud before the sorting began.

Beside her, Draco noticed the familiar sparkle in her bright teal eyes.

He immediately became suspicious.

That look rarely ended with ordinary results.

Theo noticed it too.

Daphne exchanged a glance with Blaise.

Even Snape, from the staff table, caught sight of that expression and felt a flicker of concern.

Years of experience had taught him exactly what that look meant.

Mira was planning something.

The hall's applause slowly began to fade.

McGonagall lifted the parchment containing the first-years' names.

Silence settled.

And at that exact moment, Mira casually waved one hand beneath the table.

No wand.

No spoken incantation.

No visible magic.

Just a tiny, precise movement.

A second later—

Pop!

A small yellow firework exploded near the front of the Hufflepuff table.

The entire hall jumped.

Students looked around in confusion.

Then the firework blossomed.

Golden-yellow sparks spiraled upward like sunlight given form.

The sparks stretched and transformed into glowing words suspended high above the Hufflepuff table.

LOYALTY

TOLERANCE

PATIENCE

HARD-WORKING

FRIENDLY

DEDICATION

The letters shimmered in black and yellow light.

Students stared upward in surprise.

Then smiles began spreading across Hufflepuff faces.

Second-years sat straighter.

Third-years grinned.

Older students exchanged pleased looks.

Professor Sprout blinked in astonishment before placing a hand over her heart.

The words glowed warmly above her house.

For a moment, the entire Hufflepuff table looked brighter.

Prouder.

More unified.

Before anyone could react further—

Pop!

A second firework erupted above Ravenclaw.

Silver-blue sparks exploded across the ceiling.

The hall gasped.

The lights twisted into elegant script.

WISDOM

INTELLECTUAL

CLEVER

SHARP-MINDED

LOGICAL

CREATIVITY

Blue and grey light reflected across hundreds of amazed faces.

At the Ravenclaw table, older students immediately began pointing excitedly.

Several first-years waiting to be sorted stared open-mouthed.

Professor Flitwick actually squeaked with delight.

His eyes shone with unmistakable pride.

The words seemed to dance among the floating candles.

Even the enchanted ceiling reflected their glow.

Luna Lovegood, standing among the first-years, watched with dreamy fascination.

Rose Potter was equally fascinated by the display.

The words floated like stars.

Like thoughts.

Like possibilities.

Before the Ravenclaw display faded—

BOOM!

Red and gold exploded above Gryffindor.

The firework burst larger than the previous two.

Brilliant crimson sparks rained across the ceiling.

Golden letters formed amid the glittering light.

BRAVE

CHIVALROUS

DARING

CONFIDENT

VALIANT

COURAGEOUS

The Gryffindor table erupted immediately.

Cheers.

Whistles.

Applause.

The words burned like banners in the air.

Kent Potter's eyes widened as he stared upward.

Ginny Weasley grinned despite her nervousness.

Even Percy looked impressed.

Professor McGonagall adjusted her glasses, though the small smile tugging at her lips suggested she was secretly pleased.

The red and gold glow illuminated every lion crest in the hall.

For a brief moment, Gryffindor looked exactly like the heroic stories written about it.

Then came Slytherin.

A burst of emerald and silver erupted above the house table.

The explosion was quieter.

Sharper.

Elegant rather than loud.

Green light coiled through the air like enchanted mist.

Silver letters emerged one by one.

CUNNING

DETERMINED

AMBITIOUS

RESOURCEFUL

INNOVATIVE

ACCOMPLISHED

The words gleamed proudly above the Slytherins.

Not dark.

Not sinister.

Not cruel.

The qualities shone as strengths.

Virtues.

Things worth aspiring toward.

Many Slytherin students sat a little taller.

Draco felt a warm sense of satisfaction.

Daphne smiled softly.

Theo nodded in approval.

Blaise looked amused but pleased.

At the staff table, Snape's black eyes shifted toward Mira.

She was staring forward innocently.

Far too innocently.

He immediately knew.

Of course it was her.

Only Mira would create a magical display celebrating every house equally.

Only Mira would do so without seeking recognition.

And only Mira could cast something this intricate wandlessly.

The words slowly faded.

The hall fell quiet.

Everyone thought the display had ended.

It hadn't.

Mira moved one finger beneath the table.

Four fireworks launched simultaneously.

One from the center of every house table.

The explosions filled the hall with color.

Gold.

Blue.

Red.

Green.

The sparks swirled together.

Students craned their necks.

Then the fireworks transformed.

A badger emerged above Hufflepuff.

An eagle above Ravenclaw.

A lion above Gryffindor.

A serpent above Slytherin.

The animals were enormous.

Made entirely from living magical light.

The lion roared.

The eagle spread glowing wings.

The badger bounded playfully through the air.

The serpent slithered gracefully between floating candles.

The hall erupted into laughter and delighted gasps.

The animals raced across the ceiling.

The lion pounced.

The eagle dove.

The badger chased after floating sparks.

The serpent weaved elegantly around chandeliers and banners.

Each animal eventually paused above its respective Head of House.

Professor Sprout laughed openly as the glowing badger sat proudly above her.

Flitwick applauded enthusiastically when the eagle circled him.

McGonagall's smile widened as the lion stood majestically overhead.

Even Snape's expression softened almost imperceptibly when the silver-green serpent coiled protectively above his chair.

Then all four animals looked toward the center of the hall.

And charged.

Students shouted in excitement.

The creatures raced across the ceiling.

Lion.

Eagle.

Badger.

Serpent.

They collided directly above the staff table.

A brilliant explosion of multicolored light filled the Great Hall.

Everyone shielded their eyes.

When the brightness faded—

A glittering Hogwarts crest hung suspended above the hall.

Perfect.

Magnificent.

Radiant.

Silver sparks drifted downward like magical snow.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The entire hall simply stared.

Then applause erupted.

Thunderous.

Deafening.

Students leapt to their feet.

Every table joined together.

Hufflepuffs cheered.

Ravenclaws applauded.

Gryffindors shouted excitedly.

Slytherins smiled openly.

The first-years looked awestruck.

Many parents watching through the Snitch Cameras would later replay the moment dozens of times.

Above all else, however, the display had accomplished exactly what Mira intended.

Every house looked proud.

Not divided.

Not competing.

Proud.

Together.

As the applause gradually settled, McGonagall glanced toward Dumbledore.

Dumbledore's eyes twinkled.

Snape looked toward Mira again.

Draco smirked knowingly.

Theo, Daphne, and Blaise exchanged amused looks.

The secret remained intact.

The rest of Hogwarts would spend weeks wondering who had created the display.

Only a handful of people knew the answer.

Mira simply folded her hands in her lap and smiled.

At last, McGonagall cleared her throat.

The hall quieted.

The Sorting Hat was placed upon the stool once more.

The sorting finally began. A few went to Gryffindor. Another went to Hufflepuff. Some to Ravenclaw. Mira could easily tell that the first years were now more excited to join one of the Four Houses.

"Lovegood, Luna!"

The dreamy blonde girl walked forward.

The hat barely touched her head.

"RAVENCLAW!"

Blue and bronze erupted in cheers.

Luna smiled serenely and wandered toward her new table.

"Potter, Kent!"

Another ripple of curiosity spread through the hall.

Kent sat upon the stool.

The hat deliberated briefly.

Then announced:

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The lion table erupted once more.

Kent grinned as he hurried to join his house.

"Potter, Rose!"

A murmur swept through the hall.

The younger Potter sibling approached nervously.

The hat considered.

Then shouted,

"RAVENCLAW!"

The Ravenclaws applauded enthusiastically.

Rose smiled brightly as she joined them.

Finally—

"Weasley, Ginevra!"

Ginny stepped forward.

The hat barely paused.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table erupted with excitement.

Fred and George cheered loudest of all.

And as the sorting continued beneath floating candles and the lingering sparkle of the Hogwarts crest, the Great Hall felt warmer than it had in years.

Not because of the magic.

Not because of the fireworks.

But because, for a few precious moments, every student had been reminded that their house was something to celebrate. And Hogwarts itself felt a little more united because of it.
