The Twin Who Lived: Secrets of the Serpent - The Caretaker’s Fate

Night had settled over Hogwarts like a heavy velvet curtain.

Beyond the enchanted windows of the Slytherin common room, the dark waters of the Black Lake drifted silently through the darkness, broken only by the occasional ripple of unseen creatures passing through the depths. Green-tinted light filtered through the underwater windows, casting eerie patterns across the stone walls and polished floors. Most of the younger students had already retired to their dormitories, while older students lingered near the fireplace, discussing homework, Quidditch, and the increasingly unsettling rumors surrounding the Chamber of Secrets. The warmth of the flames should have been comforting. Instead, an uneasy tension seemed to hang in the air. Every creak of the ancient castle felt louder these days. Every distant sound made students glance over their shoulders. Even laughter seemed quieter than usual.

Mira sat near the fireplace beside Draco when she suddenly stiffened.

A familiar vibration hummed against her chest.

Her hand instinctively moved toward the Whispering Balm Jade hanging beneath her robes.

At the same time, her Witcher Medallion began to tremble.

Not violently.

Just enough.

Enough to make her stomach sink.

Enough to tell her something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Draco noticed immediately, "Mira?"

His voice dropped.

Concern replacing his relaxed expression.

Mira slowly looked up.

Her bright teal eyes had become serious, "The medallions."

Draco's face paled slightly.

He knew exactly what that meant.

Theo immediately sat forward.

Blaise frowned.

Daphne looked between them.

The atmosphere around their group shifted instantly.

Only a handful of people knew about the strange warnings Mira's magical artifacts occasionally provided.

Every previous warning had led to something significant.

Usually dangerous.

Mira stood, "We need to go."

Nobody questioned her.

Not anymore.

The Chamber attacks had already proven her instincts frighteningly accurate.

Draco rose first.

Then Theo.

Then Blaise.

Then Daphne.

Together they headed toward the common room entrance.

Unfortunately, someone blocked their path.

Gemma Farley stood near the doorway.

The Slytherin Prefect folded her arms, "No."

The single word stopped them immediately.

Gemma's expression remained firm, "It's after curfew."

Draco opened his mouth.

Gemma raised a hand, "No."

Draco closed his mouth again.

Mira appreciated Gemma's efficiency, "You don't understand."

Gemma's gaze softened slightly, "I understand perfectly." Her voice remained calm, "The Chamber is open. Students are being attacked. Which is exactly why none of you are leaving."

Mira looked toward the concealed entrance.

The humming from her medallions continued.

Stronger now.

More urgent.

Something in her chest tightened.

Every instinct told her they were running out of time.

Before she could argue further—

A sound echoed from beyond the hidden doorway.

A desperate meow.

Then another.

The sound was filled with panic.

Fear.

Distress.

Everyone froze.

Gemma's expression immediately changed, "Was that—"

"Mrs. Norris," Mira answered instantly.

The hidden entrance opened.

Mrs. Norris practically burst into the common room.

The usually composed cat looked utterly frantic.

Her fur appeared slightly disheveled.

Her yellow eyes were wide.

She spotted Mira immediately.

Without hesitation, she sprinted across the room.

Then leapt.

Mira barely had time to react before the cat landed in her arms.

The moment she caught her, Mira felt trembling.

Mrs. Norris was shaking.

Actually shaking.

The realization sent a chill down her spine.

"Hey," Mira gently stroked the cat's fur. Her voice softened, "It's alright."

Mrs. Norris pressed against her.

Another frightened meow escaped her.

The cat kept looking toward the entrance.

Then back toward Mira.

Then toward the entrance again.

As though trying desperately to communicate something.

Mira understood immediately, "She wants us to follow her."

Gemma didn't hesitate, "Then we're following."

The Prefect's earlier objections vanished instantly.

Whatever had frightened Mrs. Norris this badly couldn't be ignored.

The corridors felt colder than usual.

Torchlight flickered along the stone walls.

Their footsteps echoed through the otherwise silent castle.

Mrs. Norris darted ahead before stopping periodically to ensure the group remained behind her.

The cat moved with increasing urgency.

Every few moments she would release another anxious meow.

Mira's medallions hummed continuously now.

The vibration had become impossible to ignore.

Draco noticed her expression, "How close?"

Mira swallowed, "Very."

Nobody spoke after that.

They turned a corner.

Then another.

Then a third.

And suddenly Mrs. Norris stopped.

The cat froze.

A heartbreaking sound escaped her.

Not a normal meow.

Something closer to grief.

Everyone followed her gaze.

Then the world seemed to stop.

Filch lay motionless against the wall.

His eyes were wide.

Frozen.

His body stiff.

Completely petrified.

The torchlight reflected off his unmoving form.

For several long seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The sight was horrifying.

Not because Filch was particularly popular.

But because he was undeniably human.

And seeing anyone reduced to a lifeless statue was terrifying.

Theo's face went white.

Blaise looked genuinely shaken.

Even Gemma seemed stunned.

"Oh Merlin." Daphne's whisper barely carried through the corridor.

Mrs. Norris rushed forward.

The cat pressed herself against Filch's petrified leg.

Meowing desperately.

Trying to wake him.

Trying to get a response.

None came.

Mira felt her heart ache.

Whatever anyone thought about Argus Filch, there was no mistaking the bond between him and his cat.

Mrs. Norris looked utterly devastated.

The sight hurt far more than the message on the wall.

Mira acted immediately.

Her Sanctuary Suitcase appeared beside her.

The enchanted case opened.

A blur of brown fur and antlers emerged.

Finn.

The Jackalope landed gracefully on the floor.

His ears twitched.

Mira knelt and handed a note to him, "Finn, I need you to deliver a message."

The Jackalope immediately became serious.

Mira quickly explained, "This will tell Madam Pomfrey to prepare Petrification Cure immediately."

Finn nodded.

Then vanished down the corridor with astonishing speed.

Meanwhile, Mira carefully levitated Filch.

The caretaker's rigid body floated gently into the air.

Mrs. Norris refused to leave his side.

The cat trotted beneath him the entire journey.

Occasionally looking up as though checking that he remained there.

Gemma and Daphne exchanged glances, "We'll get Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall."

Mira nodded, "Go."

The two girls immediately hurried away.

The rest continued toward the Hospital Wing.

Madam Pomfrey was waiting when they arrived.

Finn sat proudly atop a nearby cabinet.

Mission accomplished.

The nurse immediately moved into action.

No hesitation.

No wasted motion.

Filch was placed carefully onto a bed and Mira gently remove the lantern from his hand.

The potion was already prepared.

Mira silently thanked herself for insisting the school stockpile Petrification Cure after Mrs. Norris's attack.

Without it, Filch might have remained petrified for months.

The thought was unpleasant.

Pomfrey gently administered the potion.

Then everyone waited.

The minutes felt endless.

The Hospital Wing remained almost completely silent.

Only the ticking of a nearby clock interrupted the stillness.

Mrs. Norris sat on Mira’s lap, who was gently petting her.

Never taking her eyes off Filch.

Every so often her tail twitched anxiously.

Draco sat quietly beside Mira.

Theo and Blaise occupied nearby chairs.

Nobody felt like talking.

The Chamber had claimed another victim.

And this time it felt closer somehow.

More personal.

The doors suddenly opened.

Dumbledore entered first.

McGonagall followed immediately behind him.

Gemma and Daphne arrived moments later.

Both professors froze upon seeing Filch.

Shock crossed McGonagall's face.

Dumbledore's expression became deeply troubled.

For several moments neither spoke.

The sight said enough.

The Chamber truly was active again.

And now even staff members were being targeted.

Then movement.

A twitch.

Filch's fingers moved.

Mrs. Norris immediately jumped onto the bed.

Another twitch.

A blink.

Then another.

Color slowly returned to Filch's face.

His breathing deepened.

Finally, his eyes focused.

Confusion appeared.

Then recognition.

"Mrs. Norris?" His voice sounded weak.

The cat immediately rubbed against him.

Meowing nonstop.

The relief in the room was almost palpable.

Filch looked exhausted.

But alive.

Awake.

Human again.

Pomfrey gently guided him back onto the pillows, "You'll be alright."

Filch swallowed.

His throat still felt dry, "Feel like I've been run over by a Hippogriff."

"A temporary side effect." Pomfrey adjusted his blanket, "Rest. Food. A few days. You'll recover."

The caretaker visibly relaxed.

Only then did Filch notice Mira.

Mrs. Norris remained pressed against her side.

The cat had apparently decided Mira was trustworthy.

Filch's eyes softened.

A rare occurrence.

"Miss Silverthorne."

Mira stepped closer, "Mr. Filch."

The caretaker hesitated.

Something vulnerable flickered across his face.

Something few students had ever seen.

"Would you..."

He glanced toward Mrs. Norris.

The cat immediately moved closer to Mira.

Filch gave a weak smile, "Would you look after her while I'm recovering?"

The request stunned several people.

Filch trusted almost nobody.

Yet here he was.

Entrusting his beloved companion to a student.

Mira didn't hesitate.

Not even for a second.

"I promise." Her voice was gentle, "I'll take good care of her."

Mrs. Norris purred softly.

"I won't let anything happen to her."

Filch closed his eyes briefly.

The tension seemed to leave his shoulders.

Relief washed across his face.

For the first time since awakening, he looked truly at peace.

"Thank you."

The words were quiet.

Sincere.

And somehow more meaningful than any grand speech.

As the night deepened outside the Hospital Wing windows, Mrs. Norris curled comfortably beside Mira's chair while Filch drifted into much-needed sleep. Dumbledore and McGonagall quietly discussed the growing danger posed by the Chamber. Draco, Theo, Blaise, Daphne, and Gemma remained nearby, each lost in their own thoughts. Another attack had occurred. Another victim had fallen. Yet unlike the previous attacks, this one had ended differently. Thanks to Mira's preparation, Filch had been saved within hours. The Chamber remained open. The heir remained hidden. The danger was far from over. But as Mrs. Norris purred softly in her arms, Mira silently vowed that whoever was behind these attacks would not remain hidden forever.
