The Twin Who Lived: Secrets of the Serpent - The Lion's Memory

The discovery happened entirely by accident.

Or at least, it happened in the particular way that discoveries always seemed to happen whenever Pip and Briony were involved. The two Nifflers had spent the better part of the afternoon exploring one of Hogwarts' older storage rooms near the library. The room itself was dusty and forgotten, filled with ancient trunks, broken furniture, and shelves that had not been disturbed in decades. Sunlight filtered weakly through a narrow window high in the wall, illuminating drifting clouds of dust that sparkled like tiny stars. Mira had followed the pair mostly to make sure they didn't accidentally steal anything important. Draco had accompanied her, partly out of curiosity and partly because wherever Pip and Briony went, chaos usually followed. Harry, Ron, and Hermione had joined them after hearing that the Nifflers had found "something interesting." None of them had expected to uncover a relic belonging to one of Hogwarts' founders.

Pip emerged triumphantly from beneath a pile of old blankets.

The Niffler chirped loudly.

Something leather-bound was clutched firmly in his paws.

Briony immediately bounded after him.

Mira blinked.

Draco leaned forward.

Hermione's eyes widened.

"What did he find now?" Ron asked.

"Hopefully not a cursed artifact," Harry muttered.

Pip proudly presented the object to Mira.

The diary looked ancient.

Its leather cover had darkened with age.

The edges of its pages were worn and yellowed.

Most striking of all was the embossed lion crest worked into the front.

A lion that every student at Hogwarts would instantly recognize.

{A/N: What the diary looks like}

Hermione gasped, "Oh."

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Draco whispered the obvious.

"That's Gryffindor's crest."

The room fell silent.

A short time later, they sat together in an unused study room near the library. The diary rested carefully on the table between them. Candles flickered gently around the chamber, casting warm golden light across the ancient cover. Harry found himself staring at the lion emblem. There was something strange about holding an object that had belonged to someone who had lived a thousand years ago. History books suddenly felt far more real. Ron appeared equally awed. Hermione looked as though Christmas had arrived early. Mira carefully turned the diary over in her hands. Ancient magic lingered within it. Not dangerous magic. Not dark magic. Memory magic.

"There's a memory echo attached to the diary." Mira stated.

"A memory echo?" Harry asked.

Mira nodded.

Draco leaned forward.

"Can you activate it?"

"Maybe."

Carefully, Mira placed her hand against the cover.

Silver-blue magic shimmered beneath her fingertips.

The diary trembled.

Then the pages began turning on their own.

Wind swept through the room despite the closed windows.

The candle flames flickered wildly.

Ancient magic awakened.

And suddenly the room vanished.

Stone walls rose around them.

The study disappeared.

The students found themselves standing inside a memory.

The Great Hall appeared younger.

Newer.

The enchanted ceiling looked different.

The banners were absent.

The castle itself seemed less finished than the Hogwarts they knew.

Three figures stood near the center of the hall.

Godric Gryffindor.

Rowena Ravenclaw.

Helga Hufflepuff.

All three looked worried.

Waiting.

Then the doors opened.

A man stumbled inside.

The students immediately recognized him.

Salazar Slytherin.

But the moment the students saw Salazar, every thought vanished.

This was not the confident wizard from portraits and legends.

This Salazar looked broken.

He looked terrible.

Blood stained portions of his robes.

Several visible wounds crossed his arms and shoulders.

One sleeve had been torn nearly completely away.

His normally proud posture had collapsed beneath exhaustion.

Helga immediately rushed forward, "Salazar!"

He nearly fell.

Godric caught him before he could hit the floor, "Easy."

For a moment Salazar said nothing.

His eyes looked hollow.

Empty.

Lost.

Then Helga noticed something.

There was no Cassandra.

Her face paled, "Where's Cassandra?"

The question hung in the air.

Salazar closed his eyes.

And the students watching felt their hearts sink.

Harry immediately felt a knot form in his stomach.

Because this wasn't the imposing founder from legends.

This was a man barely holding himself together.

Helga guided Salazar toward a chair.

The warmth in her expression immediately stood out.

She moved with the confidence of a healer accustomed to caring for injured people.

"Sit."

Her voice was gentle.

Salazar obeyed.

Not because she ordered him.

Because he lacked the strength to argue.

Rowena knelt nearby.

Concern filled her intelligent eyes.

Godric paced restlessly.

The famous warrior looked ready to hunt down whoever had caused these injuries personally.

Helga carefully examined one of the wounds.

A sharp intake of breath escaped her.

"Merlin."

The word came quietly.

"What happened?"

The question lingered.

Salazar stared at the floor.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then finally—

"Cassandra is dead."

The room froze.

The words struck with physical force.

Even the students watching felt it.

Godric stopped pacing instantly.

Rowena's hand rose to her mouth.

Helga closed her eyes briefly.

No one spoke.

No one seemed capable of speaking.

The grief hanging around Salazar felt overwhelming.

Ancient.

Raw.

Painfully real.

When he finally looked up, his eyes appeared hollow.

As though part of him had already died.

"The hunters found us."

His voice sounded distant.

Like someone recounting a nightmare.

"We tried to escape."

Another pause.

"Cassandra went into labor."

The silence deepened.

Harry swallowed.

Hermione looked close to tears.

Ron stared.

Mira remained completely still.

Salazar continued speaking.

Each word seemed difficult.

"It was a miracle we found a midwife," He paused, "She gave birth before dawn."

For the first time, something softer appeared in his eyes.

Painful.

But precious.

"A son."

Rowena smiled sadly, "A son..."

Salazar nodded.

"She named him." His voice nearly broke, "Verus."

The room became quiet once more.

Godric closed his eyes.

Helga looked ready to cry.

"We both held him." Salazar whispered, "Only for a little while." His hands clenched, "Then she entrusted him to the midwife. I left the medallion we made for him to protect him. Hopefully, it will remind him that his parents loved him as soon as he came into this world."

The silence became unbearable.

"The hunters found us shortly afterward."

Helga's eyes filled with tears.

Rowena looked away.

Godric's hands clenched into fists.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Salazar stared at the floor.

"Cassandra stayed behind."

The grief in his voice became unbearable.

"She knew we couldn't outrun them."

Helga quietly began crying.

Rowena's eyes glistened.

Godric looked furious.

Not at Salazar.

At the world.

At fate.

At whatever cruelty had created this moment.

For a long time, none of the founders spoke.

The memory seemed to slow.

The Great Hall felt impossibly quiet.

Eventually, Godric stepped forward.

The warrior knelt beside his oldest friend.

Without words, he placed a hand on Salazar's shoulder.

A simple gesture.

Yet somehow it carried everything.

Support.

Grief.

Brotherhood.

Rowena moved beside them.

Helga joined them.

Together, the three founders surrounded Salazar.

Not as rivals.

Not as legends.

As friends.

As family.

As people trying desperately to help someone survive unimaginable loss.

The memory shifted.

Days passed.

The Great Hall darkened.

Then brightened again.

The next scene emerged.

Salazar stood near the entrance doors.

His injuries had mostly healed.

But grief remained.

The students immediately noticed it.

It lingered behind his eyes.

Inside every movement.

Godric stood nearby.

Rowena beside him.

Helga as well.

No one looked happy.

No one wanted this conversation.

"We both know they will continue searching." Salazar's voice remained calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm people used when forcing themselves to continue.

Godric shook his head. "You could stay."

"I can't."

The answer came immediately.

"If they discover Hogwarts..."

His gaze moved across the castle.

"...they will come here."

Silence.

"The students would be endangered."

Another pause.

"My friends would be endangered."

Helga lowered her eyes.

Because they all knew he was right.

The goodbye felt painful.

Real.

Human.

Nothing like the legends described.

No dramatic arguments.

No betrayal.

No hatred.

Only sadness.

Godric pulled Salazar into a fierce embrace.

The warrior's eyes were suspiciously bright, "You'll always have a home here."

Salazar's composure finally cracked, "I know."

Rowena hugged him next as tears streamed down her own face.

Then Helga, crying openly.

The three founders clung to him for a brief moment.

As though refusing to let him go.

Harry felt something shift inside him.

Every story he had ever heard about Salazar Slytherin suddenly seemed incomplete.

Wrong.

This wasn't the monster from children's tales.

This was a grieving father.

A widower.

A friend saying goodbye.

Finally, Salazar stepped away.

The castle doors opened.

Wind swept through the entrance hall.

His robes stirred.

For a moment, he looked back.

At Hogwarts.

At his friends.

At the life he was leaving behind.

Then quietly—

He smiled.

A small smile.

Sad.

Grateful.

Loving.

"Take care of Hogwarts."

Godric nodded, "We will."

Salazar inclined his head.

Then he turned.

And walked away.

The doors closed behind him.

The memory shattered.

The students found themselves back in the study room.

Silence greeted them.

No one spoke immediately.

The candles flickered softly.

The ancient diary rested motionless on the table.

Ron stared at it.

Hermione wiped at her eyes.

Harry looked deeply unsettled.

Draco remained unusually quiet.

Even Pip and Briony seemed subdued.

Finally, Harry broke the silence, "That's not what the history books say."

"No," Hermione's voice was soft, "They don't."

Mira looked down at the diary.

Thinking.

Processing.

Reevaluating centuries of assumptions.

The memory had revealed something important.

Something powerful.

The founders had not been divided by hatred.

At least not then.

They had once been friends.

Family, almost.

And Salazar Slytherin had not left Hogwarts as a dark wizard fleeing justice.

He had left as a grieving man protecting the people he loved.

Outside the window, the evening sun cast long shadows across the castle grounds. Somewhere deep within Hogwarts, the Chamber of Secrets remained open. Somewhere, Tom Riddle's Horcrux continued manipulating events from the darkness. Yet for the first time, Harry, Ron, and Hermione found themselves questioning everything they thought they knew about Salazar Slytherin. The legend had painted him as a villain. The diary had shown them a man. And somehow, that was far more complicated.

The Headmaster's office was unusually crowded that evening.

Golden instruments clicked and whirred atop their tables, filling the circular room with soft mechanical sounds. Shelves packed with ancient books lined the walls from floor to ceiling. Portraits of former headmasters watched curiously from their frames, many pretending not to listen while obviously listening to every word. Fawkes perched quietly upon his golden stand near the window, crimson feathers glowing warmly in the candlelight. Outside, darkness had settled over Hogwarts, turning the distant grounds into a sea of shadows. The atmosphere felt heavier than usual. The Chamber of Secrets, the attacks, Tom Riddle's Horcrux, and now the discovery of another Founder's diary had brought everyone together once again. Dumbledore sat behind his desk while McGonagall, Snape, Flitwick, Sprout, and Alaric Silverthorne occupied nearby chairs. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco, and Mira stood near the center of the room.

Dumbledore's blue eyes settled on the diary resting in Mira's hands, "You believe this belonged to Godric Gryffindor?"

Mira nodded, "Pip and Briony found it in an abandoned storage room."

Ron shifted in place, "It definitely belongs to him."

Hermione immediately added, "There's a memory echo inside."

McGonagall straightened, "A memory echo?"

Her expression became interested despite herself.

Flitwick leaned forward, "Are you sure?"

"Yes," Mira carefully placed the book upon Dumbledore's desk, "But this memory takes place after Cassandra Elowen's death."

The room became noticeably quieter.

Even the portraits stopped pretending not to listen.

The name Cassandra Elowen carried weight now.

They all knew who she was.

The half-blood healer Salazar Slytherin had loved.

The mother of Verus Slytherin.

The woman whose death had shattered one of Hogwarts' founders.

Dumbledore looked thoughtful.

"Show us."

Mira rested her fingertips against the diary's worn cover.

Ancient magic stirred immediately.

The lion embossed upon the leather seemed almost alive beneath the flickering candlelight.

A low hum filled the room.

Pages began turning on their own.

Golden light spilled outward.

The office dissolved.

Several professors had experienced memory echoes before.

Others had not.

McGonagall inhaled sharply as the room transformed around them.

Harry felt the familiar sensation of stepping into history.

The office vanished.

Stone walls rose around them.

The study disappeared.

The Great Hall appeared younger.

Newer.

The enchanted ceiling looked different.

The banners were absent.

The castle itself seemed less finished than the Hogwarts they knew.

Godric Gryffindor.

Rowena Ravenclaw.

Helga Hufflepuff.

A man stumbled inside.

Salazar Slytherin.

And the room collectively fell silent.

He looked terrible.

Blood stained portions of his robes.

Several visible wounds crossed his arms and shoulders.

He nearly fell.

The question lingered.

Salazar stared at the floor.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then finally—

"Cassandra is dead."

The room froze.

This time, however, more people witnessed them.

McGonagall's hand slowly rose to her mouth.

Sprout visibly flinched.

Flitwick lowered his eyes.

Even Snape's expression darkened.

Yet Mira noticed his hands tighten slightly.

Godric stopped pacing instantly.

Rowena's hand rose to her mouth.

Helga closed her eyes briefly.

No one spoke.

No one seemed capable of speaking.

The grief hanging around Salazar felt overwhelming.

Ancient.

Harry found himself staring at Salazar.

Not the legendary founder.

Not the man blamed for the Chamber.

Just a grieving husband.

A grieving father.

Ron swallowed, "I never imagined..."

His voice faded.

Hermione nodded slowly, "Neither did I."

McGonagall looked troubled, "History rarely speaks of this."

"No," Dumbledore's voice was quiet, "It does not."

The Headmaster watched the memory carefully.

His expression revealed sadness.

Not surprise.

Sadness.

As though he mourned something long forgotten.

The memory shifted.

Days passed.

The Great Hall darkened.

The doors closed behind him.

The memory shattered.

The Headmaster's office returned.

The transition felt abrupt.

Jarring.

For several moments, nobody spoke.

The silence stretched.

Long.

Thoughtful.

Heavy.

Only the ticking instruments dared make noise.

Finally, Dumbledore folded his hands together.

His eyes remained on the diary.

"A remarkable discovery," His voice was gentle, "A profoundly important one."

McGonagall slowly shook her head, "Everything we've been taught..."

She stopped.

Started again.

"Everything we've taught."

The admission seemed difficult.

The Transfiguration professor looked genuinely unsettled.

Flitwick nodded, "The founders appeared closer than history suggests."

"Much closer," Sprout's voice carried quiet sadness, "They looked like family."

"They were family." Mira spoke softly.

Everyone looked toward her.

Mira met their gazes, "You don't mourn someone like that unless they matter deeply."

No one argued.

Because no one could.

Harry looked toward Dumbledore, "Professor?"

Dumbledore smiled faintly, "Yes, Harry?"

"Did you know?"

The question hung in the room.

Harry shifted, "I mean... did you know Salazar wasn't like the stories?"

Dumbledore became very quiet.

His eyes moved toward the window.

Toward the darkness outside.

Then back toward Harry.

"I suspected."

The answer surprised everyone.

Harry blinked, "You did?"

Dumbledore nodded, "I have spent many years studying Hogwarts' history."

A small smile appeared.

"And one thing I have learned is that history often prefers simple villains."

The room remained silent.

Dumbledore continued, "Real people are rarely simple," His gaze settled upon the diary, "Salazar Slytherin was no exception."

Ron frowned, "Then why does everyone say he hated Muggle-borns?"

An uncomfortable silence followed.

Several professors exchanged looks.

Finally, Dumbledore answered, "Because history remembers endings better than beginnings."

Ron looked confused.

Dumbledore leaned back slightly, "By the time Salazar left Hogwarts, disagreements existed," A pause, "Real disagreements."

Another pause.

"Fear existed as well," His voice softened, "The magical world was far more dangerous then."

Hermione nodded slowly, "The witch hunters."

"Precisely," Dumbledore smiled, "Salazar's fears were not born entirely from prejudice," Another pause, "They were born from experience."

Harry thought about Cassandra.

The hunters.

The pursuit.

The death.

Suddenly certain things made much more sense.

Not acceptable.

Not right.

But understandable.

Snape finally spoke.

A rare occurrence during discussions like these.

"The diary confirms something important."

Everyone turned toward him.

Snape's dark eyes narrowed thoughtfully, "The Chamber."

Harry stiffened.

So did Ron.

Hermione immediately focused.

Snape continued, "If Salazar truly left under these circumstances..." A pause, "He likely never intended the Chamber to become what it eventually became."

The room grew still.

Draco frowned, "You think somebody changed its purpose?"

"It's possible," Snape's voice remained calm, "Or perhaps later generations misinterpreted his intentions."

Dumbledore nodded slowly, "Considering everything we've learned recently..." His gaze moved toward Mira, "...that possibility deserves consideration."

Everyone was silent for a moment.

“For centuries, Salazar Slytherin has been remembered almost entirely through conflict and rumor.” Dumbledore stated.

McGonagall looked toward him slowly. “But this changes everything,” she whispered.

“Not everything,” Snape said softly from the shadows. “But enough.”

The room turned toward him in surprise.

Snape’s dark gaze remained on the diary. “He was still flawed,” he said carefully. “Still dangerous in many ways, no doubt. But this…” He paused briefly. “This was not the story that survived.”

Hermione spoke next, her voice quiet but firm. “People turned him into a monster because it was easier.”

Ron blinked at her. “You really think so?”

“Yes,” Hermione answered immediately. “It’s simpler to remember villains than complicated people.”

Flitwick slowly nodded in agreement.

Dumbledore looked toward Mira then, his blue eyes thoughtful once more. “You chose to bring this to us rather than keep it hidden.”

Mira met his gaze evenly. “People deserve to know the truth.”

Draco glanced sideways at her again, and despite everything, he felt something tighten painfully in his chest. Because that was the thing about Mira Silverthorne. She never pursued power for its own sake. She uncovered things because she genuinely believed truth mattered. Even when it hurt.

Dumbledore smiled faintly.

“Yes,” he said softly, “They do.”

The Chamber of Secrets remained open. Tom Riddle's Horcrux still threatened the school. The danger surrounding Hogwarts had not vanished. Yet the discovery of Godric Gryffindor's diary had revealed something invaluable. It had restored a piece of history long buried beneath centuries of assumptions and misunderstandings. Salazar Slytherin was no longer merely a legend, nor a villain from simplified stories. He had become something far more complicated. A founder. A father. A husband. A friend. And as Dumbledore looked down at the ancient diary resting upon his desk, he found himself wondering how many other truths remained hidden within Hogwarts' walls, waiting patiently for someone willing to listen to the echoes of the past.
