The Twin Who Lived: Secrets of the Serpent - Whispers in the Corridor

The celebrations following Slytherin's Quidditch victory had lasted well into the evening. The common room had been filled with laughter, excited retellings of spectacular plays, and increasingly exaggerated accounts of Mira's winning catch. By the time Mira, Draco, Blaise, Daphne, and Theo finally left to head toward their dormitories, most of Hogwarts had already settled into the quieter rhythms of nighttime. The castle corridors seemed entirely different after dark. Shadows stretched longer beneath the flickering torchlight. Ancient suits of armor stood motionless along the walls, their polished surfaces reflecting golden light. Portraits dozed within their frames or murmured softly to neighboring paintings. The air felt cooler as autumn deepened around the castle. Outside the narrow windows, darkness blanketed the grounds. Even the distant silhouette of the Forbidden Forest appeared more mysterious beneath the moonlight. For a brief moment, everything felt peaceful.

Then Mira's Witcher Medallion vibrated.

The sensation was subtle.

A faint hum against her chest.

Yet it immediately sent a chill down her spine.

At nearly the same moment, the Whispering Balm Jade hidden beneath her robes pulsed with gentle warmth.

Her footsteps slowed.

The others noticed instantly.

Draco frowned, "Mira?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she listened.

The castle seemed quiet.

Almost too quiet.

Then she heard it.

A distant voice.

Soft.

Hissing.

Speaking in a language few people in the world could understand.

Parseltongue.

The words slithered through the corridor like living things.

Ancient.

Cold.

Wrong.

Mira's stomach tightened.

The Chamber.

Again.

The realization struck her instantly.

Whatever had happened with Mrs. Norris had not been an isolated incident.

The danger had returned.

And this time, someone was close.

Very close.

"I hear something." Her voice remained calm despite the tension building inside her.

Theo blinked, "Hear what?"

Mira turned toward the far corridor, "Follow me."

Draco immediately fell into step beside her.

The others followed without question.

Something in her expression told them this wasn't a joke.

Whatever she had sensed was serious.

Very serious.

Their footsteps echoed through the empty halls as they moved deeper into the castle.

The torchlight seemed dimmer here.

The shadows longer.

The air colder.

The strange hissing voice came again.

Fainter now.

Almost gone.

Mira quickened her pace.

The others struggled to keep up.

Then another voice interrupted them.

"What are you lot doing out here?" Filch emerged from a nearby corridor.

Mrs. Norris rested comfortably in his arms.

Ever since Mira had saved her from petrification, the caretaker's attitude toward her had changed dramatically.

His usual suspicion softened whenever she was involved.

At least slightly.

Draco pointed toward Mira, "We were heading back."

Filch looked skeptical.

Then he noticed Mira's expression.

The caretaker frowned, "What is it?"

Mira hesitated.

She couldn't exactly explain Witcher medallions.

Or enchanted warning artifacts.

Not without creating far more questions.

"I sensed something."

Filch stared, "What sort of something?"

"I don't know yet."

The answer wasn't entirely untrue.

She knew danger was nearby.

The exact nature remained unclear.

Filch's eyes narrowed.

Then he nodded, "Lead the way."

Theo looked surprised.

Filch trusting a student was unusual enough.

Following one into potential danger was nearly unheard of.

Yet the caretaker had personally witnessed Mira saving Mrs. Norris.

That carried weight.

Especially with someone like Filch.

The group continued forward.

The corridor twisted.

Turned.

Narrowed.

The castle seemed to hold its breath around them.

Then Mira stopped.

Her heart sank.

Everyone else froze.

The sight before them was horrifying.

A boy lay motionless on the corridor floor.

His body was rigid.

Frozen.

Holding his camera in a posing position, ready to take a picture.

Moonlight spilled through a nearby window, illuminating the small camera clenched in his hands.

Colin Creevey.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound came from the distant crackling of torch flames.

Daphne's hand flew to her mouth.

Theo went pale.

Even Draco looked shaken.

Filch stared, "No..."

The caretaker's voice barely emerged as a whisper.

Mira dropped to her knees beside Colin.

Her hands immediately checked for injuries.

Pulse.

Breathing.

Magical signatures.

Everything matched what she had seen with Mrs. Norris.

Petrification.

Not death.

Thank Merlin.

Relief washed through her.

Briefly.

Then urgency replaced it.

"We need Madam Pomfrey."

She reached toward her Sanctuary Suitcase.

A pulse of silver-blue magic flowed from her fingertips.

Moments later, a small Jackalope appeared.

Finn landed gracefully beside her.

His brown fur shimmered beneath the torchlight.

The tiny antlers atop his head glowed faintly.

Theo stared.

Draco smiled slightly.

He was used to Mira summoning magical creatures by now.

The others still found it astonishing.

Mira gently scratched Finn's ears, "I need you to find Madam Pomfrey."

The Jackalope listened attentively as Mira handed him a prepared message, "Give this to her to make prepare a Petrification Cure immediately."

Finn chirped once.

Then vanished down the corridor like a brown arrow.

Filch blinked, "I'll never get used to that."

Neither would most people.

Mira rose.

Silver-blue magic flowed around Colin.

His rigid form lifted gently from the floor.

The levitation charm held him carefully.

Protectively.

"We're taking him to the Hospital Wing."

Blaise immediately nodded, "Daphne and I will get the Headmaster."

Daphne was already moving.

The two disappeared down another corridor.

Mira didn't waste another second.

The group hurried toward the Hospital Wing.

The journey felt longer than usual.

Every minute stretched painfully.

Every corner seemed farther away.

The castle felt different now.

Less safe.

Less welcoming.

Like something dark had awakened beneath its foundations.

By the time they reached the Hospital Wing, Madam Pomfrey was waiting.

Finn sat proudly on a nearby cabinet.

The Jackalope looked extremely pleased with himself.

Several potion bottles already rested on a tray.

The healer immediately moved forward, "Bring him here."

Mira carefully lowered Colin onto a bed and then gently took the camera out of his hands and placed it on the table next to the bed.

Pomfrey worked without hesitation.

Years of experience guided every movement.

The Petrification Cure shimmered with faint golden light.

She carefully administered it.

Then everyone waited.

The room fell silent.

Filch stood near the doorway.

Draco remained beside Mira.

Theo sat rigidly in a nearby chair.

Nobody wanted to speak.

Nobody wanted to break the tension.

Then the door opened.

Dumbledore entered.

McGonagall followed along with Blaise and Daphne.

Both looked grim.

Their expressions worsened when they saw Colin.

For a moment, even Dumbledore appeared shaken.

McGonagall pressed a hand against the foot of the bed.

"Oh dear."

Her voice carried genuine sadness.

The reality of the situation settled heavily over the room.

The Chamber had claimed another victim.

Then something changed.

A flicker.

A twitch.

Colin's fingers moved.

Everyone noticed instantly.

The silence became absolute.

A second later, Colin blinked.

Then blinked again.

Color returned to his face.

His breathing deepened.

Slowly, carefully, he sat upright.

The room collectively exhaled.

Relief spread through everyone present.

Even Filch looked emotional.

Colin stared around the room.

Confused.

Disoriented.

"What happened?"

His voice sounded weak.

Hoarse.

Madam Pomfrey immediately pressed him back into the pillows, "Easy."

The healer's tone softened, "You've been through quite an ordeal."

Colin looked around.

His gaze eventually settled on Mira.

Recognition returned.

Then relief, "I'm okay?"

"You're okay." Mira smiled reassuringly.

The boy visibly relaxed.

Madam Pomfrey performed several additional checks.

Then nodded.

"The cure worked perfectly."

A pause.

"Though some weakness is expected."

She adjusted his blanket.

"A few days of rest."

Another pause.

"Plenty of nourishment."

"And you'll recover completely."

Colin nearly looked ready to cry from relief.

Theo finally spoke.

The question everyone had been thinking.

"Headmaster."

Dumbledore turned toward him.

Theo swallowed, "What's happening?"

The room became quiet again.

Even Madam Pomfrey paused.

Dumbledore looked older than usual.

Wearier.

The burden of leadership weighed heavily upon him in that moment.

He folded his hands together.

His blue eyes moved from student to student.

Then he spoke, "The Chamber of Secrets has indeed been opened again."

The words landed heavily.

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody moved.

Dumbledore continued, "And I can no longer honestly say that Hogwarts is completely safe."

The admission stunned the room.

For generations, Hogwarts had been considered one of the safest places in the magical world.

Hearing Dumbledore say otherwise was deeply unsettling.

Theo stared.

Draco's expression darkened.

Filch looked worried.

Even McGonagall seemed troubled.

The Headmaster sighed softly.

"Until we discover who is responsible..."

His gaze drifted toward Colin.

"...everyone must remain vigilant."

Outside the Hospital Wing, the castle continued as it always had. Portraits whispered. Candles burned. Ancient stones stood unchanged beneath the moonlight. Yet something fundamental had shifted. The Chamber of Secrets was no longer a rumor. No longer a story told to frighten children. It was real. It was active. And for the second time that year, it had struck. As Mira looked toward the dark windows overlooking the sleeping grounds, her Witcher Medallion finally fell silent. But somehow, that silence felt far more unsettling than the warning had been. Somewhere within Hogwarts, a Basilisk still moved through hidden passages. Somewhere within the castle, Tom Riddle's Horcrux continued its work. And unless they found it soon, Colin Creevey would not be the last victim.
