The Twin Who Lived: Secrets of the Serpent - Echoes of a Forgotten Soul

The corridor outside the scene of the attack had eventually been cleared of students. Prefects escorted curious onlookers back toward their common rooms while professors quietly established protective wards around the area. The blood-red message remained on the wall for the moment, preserved as evidence. Mrs. Norris had been taken somewhere warm and quiet to continue recovering under careful observation. Yet despite the activity throughout the castle, a sense of unease lingered. It seemed woven into the very stones of Hogwarts. Every torch flickered a little too sharply. Every distant creak sounded louder than usual. The attack had transformed an ordinary school night into something darker. Something older. Now, within a private chamber adjacent to Dumbledore's office, the senior staff sat gathered around a circular table while Mira and Draco occupied two chairs opposite them.

Dumbledore regarded Mira thoughtfully.

The Headmaster's expression was calm.

Yet his eyes revealed concern.

Not fear.

Concern.

The distinction mattered.

"Tell us everything again," Dumbledore said gently.

His voice carried none of the suspicion some students might have expected.

Instead, it held the tone of a man trying to understand a puzzle.

Mira nodded.

She had already explained the events once.

Still, she understood why the professors wanted every detail.

Some details only revealed their importance upon repetition.

Especially where ancient magic was concerned.

"The first thing I noticed was the Whispering Balm Jade."

The room immediately became attentive.

Mira touched the pendant resting against her chest, "It started humming."

Professor Flitwick leaned forward slightly.

McGonagall adjusted her glasses.

Snape remained silent.

"The Witcher Medallion started vibrating at almost the same time."

Draco nodded, "I saw it."

His voice was firm.

"It wasn't imagination."

Mira continued, "It happened before we met Filch."

The room fell silent.

That detail seemed particularly important.

Professor Sprout exchanged a worried glance with McGonagall.

Ancient magical artifacts rarely reacted without reason.

Especially two completely different artifacts responding simultaneously.

Dumbledore folded his hands, "What do you believe they were reacting to?"

Mira considered the question carefully.

The answer felt obvious now.

Yet saying it aloud somehow made it more real.

"I think they were warning me."

A pause.

"About the Chamber opening."

Silence followed.

Not shocked silence.

Thoughtful silence.

The kind that settled when experienced witches and wizards began connecting pieces together.

Dumbledore's gaze sharpened, "You believe the Chamber has truly been opened?"

"I do." Mira's answer came immediately.

The certainty in her voice drew everyone's attention.

"The message wasn't random."

She glanced toward the window.

"The attack wasn't random either."

Another pause.

"Something happened tonight."

The words settled heavily over the room.

Because everyone present knew she was probably right.

Draco shifted slightly in his chair.

The movement drew attention toward him.

For a moment he looked uncertain whether to speak.

Then he did anyway.

"Mira didn't open it."

The statement was immediate.

Absolute.

Professor McGonagall blinked.

Snape's gaze flickered toward Draco.

The boy met their eyes without hesitation.

"I know that's obvious."

Draco folded his arms.

"But I wanted to say it."

His blue-grey eyes moved toward Mira.

"Those artifacts were warning her."

A pause.

"Not responding to something she did."

The conviction in his voice was unmistakable.

Everyone in the room noticed.

Even Dumbledore.

Especially Dumbledore.

Because Draco hadn't hesitated.

Not even for a second.

He simply knew.

The room grew quiet again.

The professors exchanged thoughtful looks.

None of them believed Mira responsible.

Yet Draco's certainty still carried weight.

Particularly because he had witnessed the reaction firsthand.

Finally Mira spoke again, "There might be someone who knows more."

Several heads turned.

Dumbledore raised an eyebrow, "Oh?"

Mira nodded.

Then turned toward one of the portraits hanging on the wall.

The elderly witch occupying the frame looked mildly surprised when addressed directly.

"Would you mind doing me a favor?"

The portrait blinked.

"Depends."

"Could you ask Salazar Slytherin to visit?"

The room went silent.

Completely silent.

Professor Sprout nearly dropped her teacup.

Flitwick blinked repeatedly.

McGonagall stared.

Dumbledore looked intrigued.

The portrait looked delighted, "I certainly can."

And with that, she disappeared from her frame.

The room waited.

Minutes passed.

The tension slowly built.

Then footsteps echoed from somewhere beyond the painted corridors.

A tall figure entered the empty frame.

Ancient robes.

Sharp features.

Eyes filled with intelligence and calculation.

Salazar Slytherin himself.

Or rather, the preserved magical portrait of him.

The founder stepped fully into view.

His expression immediately softened when he noticed Mira, "My heir."

Mira smiled politely, "Hello, Salazar."

Several professors still weren't entirely accustomed to hearing conversations like this.

Salazar's gaze swept across the room.

Then settled on Dumbledore, "You requested me?"

"Actually, I did." Mira's voice immediately regained everyone's attention.

The founder looked curious, "What has happened?"

The room seemed to grow colder.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The significance of the moment settled upon everyone present.

Mira drew a slow breath.

Then spoke.

"The Chamber of Secrets has been opened."

Every trace of warmth vanished from Salazar's expression.

His eyes sharpened immediately.

Ancient intelligence awakening.

The room fell silent once more.

Mira continued.

"There was an attack."

Another pause.

"A cat was petrified."

The founder's face darkened.

Not satisfaction.

Not approval.

Concern.

Genuine concern.

Dumbledore noticed immediately.

So did the others.

Salazar remained silent for several moments.

Long enough for the room to become uncomfortable.

Finally he spoke, "Then someone has entered the Chamber."

The certainty in his voice was unmistakable.

Professor McGonagall leaned forward, "Do you know what guards it, Salazar?"

Salazar's eyes shifted toward her.

For a moment he seemed almost reluctant to answer.

Then he did.

"A Basilisk."

The word struck the room like a thunderclap.

Several professors visibly stiffened.

Professor Sprout inhaled sharply.

Flitwick looked alarmed.

McGonagall's face paled.

Even Dumbledore's expression grew grave.

Only Snape remained outwardly composed.

Though inwardly his thoughts were racing.

A Basilisk.

One of the deadliest magical creatures known to wizardkind.

The implications were horrifying.

Salazar's gaze lowered slightly.

"The creature obeys Parseltongue."

His voice had become distant.

Reflective.

"Only my bloodline was ever meant to command it."

The room grew quieter still.

Everyone understood exactly what that meant.

Dumbledore spoke carefully, "Then whoever opened the Chamber possesses your blood."

Salazar nodded once, "Most likely."

The answer created a new problem.

A very significant problem.

Because everyone in the room knew precisely who possessed confirmed descent from Salazar Slytherin.

Their eyes drifted toward Mira.

Then away again.

Mira noticed.

Of course she noticed.

Beside her, Draco noticed as well.

The uncomfortable realization settled over the gathering.

Alaric Silverthorne was a direct descendant.

Mira was his heir.

Yet both were obviously innocent.

Alaric wasn't even at Hogwarts.

And Mira had been present during the attack.

The contradiction only deepened the mystery.

Salazar noticed their expressions.

His eyes narrowed, "You suspect my descendants."

"No," Snape said quietly.

The room turned toward him.

"We are wondering which descendant."

Silence followed.

Because that was the real question.

Somewhere, someone with a connection to Salazar's bloodline had apparently awakened the Chamber.

Someone hidden.

Someone unknown.

Someone dangerous.

Mira's fingers tightened slightly around the Witcher Medallion. The artifact remained still now, its warning apparently fulfilled. Yet unease lingered deep within her chest. A Basilisk. The Chamber. An unknown heir. Pieces of a puzzle were beginning to emerge from the darkness. Unfortunately, the picture they formed was growing more troubling with every answer. And as the wind rattled the castle windows beyond Dumbledore's office, nobody in the room could escape the same unsettling thought.

If the Chamber truly had been opened, then whoever had done it was still somewhere inside Hogwarts.

The room remained wrapped in uneasy silence after Salazar Slytherin revealed that a Basilisk guarded the Chamber. Outside Dumbledore's office windows, the night sky stretched endlessly across the Scottish Highlands, dark clouds drifting past a silver moon. The occasional gust of wind rattled the ancient panes, creating a faint whisper that seemed almost conversational against the castle stones. No one spoke immediately. Each professor appeared lost within their own thoughts, following dangerous possibilities down increasingly troubling paths. Professor McGonagall sat perfectly still, though the tension in her shoulders betrayed her concern. Flitwick's fingers tapped lightly against the armrest of his chair as he considered everything they had learned. Even Professor Sprout, normally one of the calmest members of staff, looked deeply unsettled. Mira sat quietly beside Draco, her fingers resting against the Witcher Medallion that now lay dormant against her chest.

A thought slowly formed in her mind.

It had been lingering since Salazar mentioned Parseltongue.

The more she examined it, the more it refused to disappear.

Finally, she looked toward Dumbledore, "Professor Dumbledore?"

Dumbledore lifted his gaze from the fire, "Yes, Mira?"

His voice was gentle, though she could tell he was already anticipating another difficult question.

Mira sat forward slightly, "Do you know of anyone else who could speak Parseltongue?"

The question immediately drew everyone's attention.

Even Salazar's portrait seemed interested.

Dumbledore's expression grew thoughtful.

Not surprised.

Thoughtful.

As though he had already asked himself the same question.

The Headmaster folded his hands together and stared into the dancing flames for several moments before answering.

"The only Parselmouth I personally knew who attended Hogwarts was Tom Riddle."

The name seemed to darken the room.

Nobody reacted dramatically.

They didn't need to.

Tom Riddle's shadow lingered over modern magical history whether people wished to acknowledge it or not.

Flitwick's tapping ceased immediately.

McGonagall's expression hardened.

Snape's dark eyes narrowed slightly.

Even Salazar looked displeased.

Dumbledore continued.

"Tom possessed an unusual degree of control over the language."

His voice carried traces of old memories.

Memories few others could share.

"He was exceptionally talented."

A pause followed.

"Exceptionally dangerous."

The fire crackled softly.

The room listened.

Yet Dumbledore shook his head.

"It cannot be him."

His certainty surprised no one.

"Tom Riddle is dead."

Another silence followed.

The logic seemed undeniable.

Tom Riddle could not be wandering Hogwarts opening ancient chambers.

The problem was that Mira's instincts refused to accept that explanation.

She lowered her eyes briefly.

Thinking.

Examining every piece of information they possessed.

The Chamber.

Parseltongue.

A hidden heir.

An ancient Basilisk.

The warning from her medallions.

The attack.

The petrification.

One by one the pieces shifted into place.

Not a complete picture.

But enough of one.

Enough to glimpse a possibility.

Slowly, Mira looked back up, "What if it isn't Tom?"

Dumbledore's eyes sharpened immediately.

The room became still.

Mira chose her next words carefully, "What if it's part of Tom?"

The professors exchanged confused glances.

Even Draco looked puzzled.

Yet Mira continued.

Her mind was moving quickly now.

Faster than before.

Following a trail only she seemed to see.

"What if someone possesses a Horcrux?"

The word landed heavily upon the gathering.

Several professors visibly stiffened.

Professor Sprout inhaled sharply.

McGonagall's face paled slightly.

Flitwick looked alarmed.

Salazar's portrait narrowed his eyes.

Only Snape remained outwardly composed.

Though inwardly, his thoughts had become considerably more focused.

Mira pressed onward.

"The Chamber was opened by someone speaking Parseltongue."

She glanced around the room.

"Tom Riddle was a Parselmouth."

Another pause.

"We know Horcruxes contain pieces of a wizard's soul."

The fire seemed louder somehow.

Every crackle punctuated her reasoning.

"If someone had one..."

Her voice slowed.

Allowing the implications to settle.

"...that piece of Tom could potentially influence them."

No one interrupted.

No one wanted to.

The theory was too compelling.

Too dangerous.

Too logical.

Mira continued.

"The Horcrux could be possessing someone."

The room remained silent.

"It would explain everything."

Another pause.

"The Chamber opens."

Her fingers tightened slightly around the armrest.

"A Basilisk attacks."

Her gaze moved toward Salazar.

"A Parselmouth is somehow commanding it."

Then toward Dumbledore.

"And Tom Riddle is involved despite being dead."

The words hung in the air.

Not as a certainty.

As a possibility.

A terrible possibility.

For several long moments, nobody spoke.

The only sound came from the fire.

Then Professor Flitwick slowly leaned forward.

The tiny Charms professor looked unusually serious.

His normally cheerful demeanor had vanished entirely.

"It is possible."

Every eye turned toward him.

Flitwick adjusted his spectacles.

His expression remained grave.

"If a Horcrux contains part of the creator's soul..."

He spoke slowly.

Carefully.

"...then that fragment would retain memories, personality traits, magical knowledge, and intent."

The room listened intently.

Flitwick's expertise in magical theory was rarely questioned.

"A sufficiently active soul fragment could influence a host."

Another pause.

"Perhaps even manipulate one."

McGonagall frowned.

"You mean possession?"

Flitwick hesitated.

"Not full possession."

His fingers folded together.

"Something more subtle."

A glance toward Mira.

"Whispers."

Another pause.

"Suggestions."

The fire crackled.

"Gradually exerting influence."

The room grew colder.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because everyone could see the horrifying implications.

A child.

A student.

Someone vulnerable.

Being manipulated by a fragment of Tom Riddle.

Dumbledore sat motionless.

His expression revealed very little.

Yet inside, his thoughts were moving rapidly.

Far too rapidly.

Because Mira's theory fit.

Disturbingly well.

It explained the impossible.

It bridged the gap between a dead Dark wizard and a living threat.

Most troubling of all, it aligned with things Dumbledore already knew about Tom Riddle.

Secrets he rarely discussed.

The Headmaster slowly rose from his chair.

His robes shifted softly around him.

The movement drew every eye in the room.

"Assuming the theory is correct..."

His voice was quiet.

Measured.

"...then the next question becomes obvious."

No one disagreed.

Because they already knew.

The room had reached the same conclusion simultaneously.

A Horcrux might explain the attacks.

A Horcrux might explain the Chamber.

A Horcrux might explain the unknown heir.

But a new mystery now stood before them.

A mystery perhaps even more difficult.

Dumbledore looked toward the fire.

Then toward the gathered professors.

Finally toward Mira.

His blue eyes reflected both pride and concern.

"We must determine what the object is."

Silence followed.

Heavy silence.

Because nobody had an answer.

Not yet.

Somewhere within Hogwarts, if Mira's theory proved correct, an object carried a fragment of Tom Riddle's soul. It could be hidden in plain sight. It could belong to a student. It could have been sitting inside the castle for years. Nobody knew its form. Nobody knew its location. Nobody knew who possessed it. Yet as the firelight danced across the ancient office and shadows stretched across the stone walls, everyone present understood one thing with absolute certainty.

If a Horcrux truly lurked within Hogwarts, then they were no longer searching for a person.

They were searching for a soul.

The atmosphere inside Dumbledore's office remained heavy after their discussion about Horcruxes. The fire crackled softly within the great stone hearth, casting flickering shadows across the walls and portraits. Salazar Slytherin's portrait remained present, his expression thoughtful rather than proud, which alone was unsettling to several professors. Outside the tall windows, storm clouds had begun gathering over the mountains surrounding Hogwarts. Occasional flashes of distant lightning illuminated the dark landscape. No one seemed eager to leave. Too many questions remained unanswered. Too many possibilities lingered in the room like ghosts. Mira sat quietly beside Draco, her Witcher Medallion resting silently against her chest, while the professors considered the implications of everything they had discussed.

Then the Floo fireplace suddenly erupted with emerald-green flames.

Every head turned.

The fire roared higher.

A moment later, two familiar figures stepped from the hearth.

Lucius Malfoy emerged first, immaculate despite the late hour. His silver-blond hair reflected the firelight as he brushed soot from one sleeve. Behind him came Alaric Silverthorne, whose silver-white hair and sharp blue eyes immediately drew Mira's attention. Unlike Lucius, Alaric looked deeply concerned. His expression carried none of his usual relaxed confidence. The moment Mira saw him, she knew something was wrong. Very wrong. Neither man looked surprised to find the professors gathered. Instead, they appeared relieved.

"Father?" Draco asked.

"Dad?" Mira echoed.

Alaric's gaze immediately found his daughter.

For a brief moment, relief softened his features.

Then the seriousness returned.

"Dumbledore," Lucius said without preamble.

His voice was unusually sharp.

"We have a problem."

The room somehow became even quieter.

McGonagall straightened in her chair.

Snape folded his arms.

Dumbledore inclined his head, "What sort of problem?"

Lucius exchanged a look with Alaric.

Not the look of political allies.

The look of two men who had independently arrived at the same alarming conclusion.

Then Lucius spoke, "A diary is missing."

Mira immediately felt a chill run down her spine.

The reaction was instant.

Instinctive.

Her thoughts leapt toward the possibility before her mind could stop them.

Meanwhile, Lucius continued, "I intended to bring it to Gringotts for examination." His expression darkened, "It disappeared before I arrived."

Alaric stepped forward, "We believe it happened during our visit to Flourish and Blotts."

The room listened intently.

Lucius nodded, "We were purchasing school supplies for Draco, Mira, and Neville."

A flash of irritation crossed his face.

"There were hundreds of people moving through the store."

The memory clearly bothered him.

Lucius Malfoy was not accustomed to losing things.

Especially not important things.

"I had the diary secured."

His voice hardened.

"Or so I believed."

Another pause.

"When I checked later, it was gone."

Silence settled across the room.

Mira's heartbeat quickened.

The timing fit.

Too well.

The missing diary.

The Chamber opening.

The attacks.

Tom Riddle.

The pieces seemed to align before her eyes.

Suddenly she stood.

Everyone looked toward her.

The realization had struck with such force that she couldn't remain seated.

"The diary."

Her voice was quiet.

Yet every person in the room heard it.

Lucius frowned.

Mira looked directly at him.

"The diary must be Tom Riddle's Horcrux."

The room froze.

Lucius blinked.

Alaric blinked.

Neither man had expected that answer.

For several moments they simply stared.

Then Lucius spoke carefully, "Why would you believe that?"

His question contained genuine confusion.

Not skepticism.

Confusion.

Alaric looked equally puzzled.

Mira opened her mouth to explain.

Yet Dumbledore spoke first.

The Headmaster rose from his chair.

His expression remained grave, "We have reason to believe Tom Riddle may be connected to the recent attack."

Lucius' eyes narrowed immediately, "What attack?"

The room became quiet once more.

Dumbledore began recounting the evening's events.

The petrified Mrs. Norris.

The message upon the wall.

The Chamber of Secrets.

The Basilisk.

Salazar's confirmation.

The possibility of a Horcrux possessing someone.

As Dumbledore spoke, Lucius' expression gradually changed.

First confusion.

Then concern.

Then alarm.

By the time the Headmaster finished, both Lucius and Alaric looked deeply unsettled.

Neither interrupted.

Neither dismissed the theory.

The evidence was simply too compelling.

Alaric slowly exhaled.

His gaze moved toward Mira.

Then toward Salazar's portrait.

Then toward the fire.

The magizoologist's mind was already racing through possibilities.

A Basilisk beneath Hogwarts.

Students potentially in danger.

A soul fragment manipulating someone.

None of it was acceptable.

Not when his daughter lived within these walls.

Lucius was equally troubled.

His normally composed demeanor had become noticeably strained.

"The diary..."

He frowned.

"It belonged to Abraxas's collection."

His voice grew quieter.

"Old possessions gathered over decades."

A pause.

"We never connected it to Riddle."

Dumbledore nodded.

"Few would."

The room fell silent again.

Mira remained standing.

Thinking.

Analyzing.

The panic she saw growing among the adults concerned her more than the mystery itself.

Because panic led to mistakes.

And mistakes would help whoever controlled the diary.

Finally she spoke.

"We don't know where the Chamber is."

The statement immediately redirected everyone's attention.

Mira's voice remained calm.

Steady.

Deliberate.

"We don't know who has the diary."

Another pause.

"We don't know who is being controlled."

The room listened.

Even Salazar's portrait watched carefully.

Mira folded her hands behind her back.

"But we do know one thing."

Dumbledore's eyes softened slightly.

He recognized the expression she wore.

It was the same look Alaric often carried when planning a response to a crisis.

Focus.

Strategy.

Purpose.

Mira continued.

"There will probably be more attacks."

No one contradicted her.

Because everyone feared the same thing.

"If that's true, then we need to prepare now."

McGonagall nodded slowly.

Flitwick leaned forward.

Snape remained silent.

Yet attentive.

Mira looked toward her father.

"We should begin brewing large quantities of Mandrake Restorative Draughts."

Alaric immediately understood.

His eyes widened slightly.

Then he nodded.

"Good thinking."

Mira continued.

"If someone else is attacked, we can't waste time searching for ingredients."

Another pause.

"We should already have the cure ready."

Professor Sprout looked impressed.

Flitwick nodded vigorously.

Even Snape appeared approving.

Then Mira addressed the second concern.

"No one should be walking alone after dinner."

The room grew quiet.

Her words felt uncomfortably necessary.

"Students should move in groups."

She looked toward Dumbledore.

"Professors should know where students are after curfew."

Another pause.

"And if anyone sees something unusual, they report it immediately."

The Headmaster slowly nodded.

One by one, the professors followed.

Not because Mira was a student.

Because she was right.

The castle could no longer afford complacency.

Outside, thunder rolled faintly across the mountains. The storm that had threatened all evening was finally arriving. Lightning briefly illuminated the office windows, turning the glass silver-white for a heartbeat before darkness returned. Around the room, plans were already beginning to form. Potions would be brewed. Patrols would be increased. Precautions would be taken. Yet despite those preparations, an uncomfortable truth remained. Somewhere within Hogwarts, a missing diary had already found a new owner. Somewhere within the castle, a fragment of Tom Riddle's soul was waiting. And if Mira's theory was correct, then the attacks had only just begun.
