CHAPTER 1 – ROOM 544
Rain crashed against the windows of Mumbai as seventeen-year-old Aaliya stepped out of the taxi with her suitcase.
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel stood before her like a glowing castle in the storm.
Her father adjusted his glasses nervously.
“We’ll stay only two nights,” he said. “Your sister’s engagement event will finish quickly.”
Aaliya nodded, but her eyes stayed fixed on the hotel entrance.
Something about the building felt strange.
Not dangerous.
Just… watching.
Inside, the hotel was breathtaking. Marble floors reflected the chandelier lights like water. Staff members welcomed guests politely while soft piano music floated through the air.
But as Aaliya walked past the reception desk, she noticed something odd.
A woman stood near the staircase.
She wore an old white dress completely different from everyone else. Her face was unclear beneath her wet black hair.
And she was staring directly at Aaliya.
“Aaliya?” her mother called.
Aaliya looked away for one second.
When she looked back…
The woman was gone.
Her heartbeat quickened.
“Excuse me,” Aaliya asked the receptionist quietly, “who was the woman standing near the stairs?”
The receptionist froze for a moment.
Then smiled nervously.
“There’s nobody there, ma’am.”
A cold feeling crawled through Aaliya’s body.
Moments later, the receptionist handed over the room keys.
Room 541.
Room 542.
Room 543.
Then suddenly—
The receptionist stopped.
His face lost color.
Slowly, he looked at another employee beside him.
“What happened?” Aaliya’s father asked.
The receptionist forced a smile.
“Small mistake, sir.”
But Aaliya saw the number written on the final key before he hid it beneath the desk.
