Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger is about 12 year old telepathic Sophie Foster realizing that she's not in fact human. She belongs to a society of elves.
In the beginning, while Sophie's still in her human world in San Diego, an elf named Fitz Vacker (otherwise known as Ritz Cracker) is shown reading a newspaper about Sophie and also comes to reveal to her that she isn't human. Fitz takes Sophie to see a glimpse of the elf world and basically tells her that everything that she has learned is a lie. Humans tried to conquer them in the past, so the elves decided that it was not allowed for mortals to know about their existence.
Sophie learns that her "family" is not her own, and staying with them will put her in horrible danger. This leaves Sophie heartbroken, but she goes back to her house to drug her family and leave.
