[Laura’s Thought]: After Avan’s training, I felt like I was vibrating at a million miles an hour. My heart was a drum, and my nerves were live wires. But the world doesn't always move in straight lines. Sometimes, the threat isn't a race; it's a tide. And that’s where Leon Smith comes in.
The training took place at the Sherwood Docks, deep in a restricted West Corp aquatic bay. The air was thick with the smell of salt and the low, rhythmic thrum of the ocean hitting the pylons.
Leon Smith stood on a floating platform in the center of a massive indoor pool. He wasn't wearing his heavy Aquatic-Armor; he was in simple training gear, his feet bare on the wet metal. He looked completely at peace, even as the water around him swirled in unnatural patterns.
"Avan taught you how to run," Leon said, his voice calm and deep, echoing in the cavernous room. "But what happens when there is nowhere to run, Laura? What happens when the enemy is inside the room with you, pressing in from all sides?"
Laura landed on the platform, her boots clanking. "Then I fight my way out."
"That is what a soldier does," Leon said, gesturing for her to stand in front of him. "But a guardian... a guardian flows. Mr. Puppet didn't beat you with strength. He beat you because you were rigid. You resisted until you snapped. I want you to learn to bend."
The Flow Exercise
Leon raised a hand, and the water from the pool rose up, forming several floating spheres the size of basketballs.
"Austin," Leon called out.
[Austin’s Voice]: "Ready, Leon. Laura, I’m activating the kinetic sensors in the water. Try to keep your balance."
Suddenly, the water spheres turned into high-velocity projectiles. They didn't hit like liquid; they hit like cannonballs. Laura immediately raised her Starlight shields, bracing herself.
THWACK. THWACK.
The impact sent her skidding back. The metal platform tilted, and she nearly fell into the dark water.
"No!" Leon shouted. "Stop trying to block the ocean! You are a Dawson—your energy is starlight. It is fluid. It is light! When the water hits, don't stand still. Move with the pressure."
[Laura’s Thought]: It’s harder than it looks. Every instinct I have screams at me to harden my shields, to get tough. But Leon is moving like a ghost. The water spheres pass right through where he was standing a second ago. He isn't fighting the water; he’s part of the splash.
For three hours, Laura was pelted with water and gravity-slugs. She was soaked, her armor was flickering, and she was frustrated. But slowly, she started to feel the rhythm. She stopped looking at the projectiles and started feeling the "static" in the air before they hit.
She closed her eyes.
[Austin’s Voice - Softly]: "You've got the rhythm, L. Just breathe. Like we’re back at the arcade... just flow."
The next sphere came at her head. Laura didn't raise a shield. She pivoted, a soft violet light trailing from her heels. The water missed her by an inch. She spun, using the momentum to deflect the next three spheres with a gentle sweep of her hand.
She wasn't punching. She was dancing.
The Chill in the Air
"Good," Leon said, lowering his hands. The water fell back into the pool with a massive splash. "You’re learning that strength isn't always a fist. Sometimes, it’s just staying calm when the world is screaming."
He walked over and handed her a towel. "How does your head feel? Any clicking?"
Laura paused, checking the "quiet" parts of her mind. "No. It’s quiet. For the first time... I don't feel like a puppet."
"Good. Because you're going to need that calm." Leon’s expression turned grim. "Austin found something on the dark-web. Mr. Puppet wasn't acting alone. He was funded by a group calling themselves The Foundry. They don't want to rule the world, Laura. They want to harvest UMAs to build a new kind of 'Living Weapon.'"
[Laura’s Thought]: The peace I felt vanished instantly. The Foundry. It sounded cold. It sounded like a place where things get melted down and reshaped. Just like Marcus. Just like me.
"We're going to find them," Austin promised over the comms, his voice steady and determined. "But first, we have a school dance to get to. And I promised you a night where nothing explodes."
Laura looked at her reflection in the water. She looked stronger. She looked ready.
"Let's hope The Foundry doesn't like to dance," she whispered.
