The days blur by. I’m getting bored sometimes. I miss action. One of these days I’m gonna go on a hunting trip with them—I need adventure in my life, ‘cause that’s all I’ve ever known. For now, I just keep doing field work, building, and taking care of animals. They also have this thing called school. Anyone under 18 has to go. Boring. Learning boring stuff. Much less excitement.
But for me… it’s too quiet. Something’s coming. I can see Abby, Martha, and Kathy feel it too. Maybe it’s a warning, or maybe we’re still not used to this life… but it feels too perfect.
Anyway, right now it’s just me and Drake hanging out. I throw a rock into the pond and ask him, “How do I even tell her I love her?”
Drake says, “Dude… just pick a flower, write a note, and leave it on her bed,” grinning.
Not helpful, Drake. I don’t want to tell her in a letter. That’s lame. How did you even tell Katie?
“Dude, you’re overthinking this way too much,” Drake says, but stops short because the girls come over.
“Hey, Abby,” I say.
“Hi, Jack. Whatcha guys talking about?” she asks, sitting beside me. Ashley sits by her and Katie sits by Drake.
“Nothing much,” I say, now being sandwiched between girls. I laugh.
I get hit by all three of the girls.
“Hey! What was that for?”
Drake laughs.
“Come on, it was a joke.”
“A bad one,” Ashley says.
“Yeah,” adds Katie.
“yeah,” Abby says.
After a while of hanging out, we all get up, do the rest of our chores, then eat and head to bed. That night I have trouble sleeping. Everything’s quiet… too quiet. There wasn’t a sound all night. Not a single whisper of wind, not a bird, not even the usual rustle of the animals. My mind kept going over it… something just doesn’t feel right.
