"Anderson Quinlan, the greatest mage to ever live, practiced day and night for three straight months. That is two-thousand, one-hundred and sixty hours of pure focus."
A sudden roar of wind through the oaks nearly drowned her out. Ura clapped her hands, eyes flashing as she glared at the three girls responsible for the commotion. There was Eilara, her friend Bevia, and a third girl with her hair pulled into a severe, tight bun. The girl’s striking green eyes felt hauntingly familiar as she stared Ura down. Nearby, Lucia leaned against a thick trunk, a mocking smirk playing on her lips.
"Focus!" Ura barked. "We begin with the basics. As you know, spells shift depending on your affinity, so join your element groups now."
Eilara’s shoulders slumped as she trudged toward the wind group.
"Look who we’re stuck with," Lucia laughed, loud enough for everyone to hear. The other girls offered Eilara sympathetic glances, but no one dared to speak up. Lucia stepped into Eilara's path, leaning in until their noses nearly touched. "I want to duel you. You’re nothing but trash, Eilara, and everyone deserves to see the truth."
The insult hit a raw nerve. Before Lucia could blink, Eilara’s left fist connected. She poured every ounce of her frustration into the punch, sending Lucia sprawling to the forest floor, gasping for air.
"Serves you right," Eilara muttered, turning her back on her rival.
"Enough!" Ura shouted, though she didn't move to help Lucia up. "The first spell you will master is the Tornado Bolt. Repeat after me: Tornado Bolt!"
"Tornado Bolt!" the class cried out in unison.
"Good," Ura said, her expression grim. She held out her left hand. "Now, say it again, and pull the energy from your core."
A jagged bolt of grey and green energy erupted from Ura’s palm. It slammed into a small tree with a sickening crack, snapping the trunk in two.
"Until you have absolute control over that power," Ura warned, "work alone. Wind is the most unstable of all elements. Do not hurt anyone." With that, she turned and disappeared into the mist.

Left in the quiet of the clearing, Eilara took a breath. She punched the air with her left hand, reaching for that small, buzzing pocket of space in her heart. It felt like a flood of raw emotion. She focused on that scale of feelings—the anger, the fear, the determination—and let it tip. Inhaling the lingering scent of Ura’s magical mist, she let the energy consume her.54Please respect copyright.PENANAWNphfOltT9
