The transition from the manicured lawns of the Montclair estate to the fringes of the Great Wilds happened almost overnight. As the group rode deeper into the territory indicated by the Wayfinder Map, the trees grew unnaturally tall, their bark shimmering with a faint, iridescent moss.
Marley sat awkwardly atop a gentle mare, clutching the pommel with white-knuckled intensity. She was still wearing her school blazer, though Jessica had insisted she swap her loafers for a pair of sturdy leather traveling boots.
"Just breathe, Marley," Jessica called out from the front of the line, her silver hair fluttering like a banner. "The horse knows the way. You just have to stay centered."
"Easy for you to say!" Marley shouted back, her voice jumping an octave. "You're a legendary Sage! Back home, the most 'adventure' I had was missing the stop for the mall!"
Marin, riding alongside her, let out a boisterous laugh. "Don't worry, kid. If you fall, I’ll catch you before you hit the dirt. Probably."
The Disturbance
As noon approached, the golden lines on the Wayfinder Map began to pulse a rhythmic, urgent green. Malric, holding the map, signaled for a halt.
"The atmospheric pressure is shifting," Malric noted, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the dense thicket ahead. "The map says there’s a localized 'leak' of raw energy nearby. It’s attracting scavengers."
Suddenly, the forest went deathly silent. The birds stopped chirping, and even the wind seemed to hold its breath. From the dark undergrowth, several shapes emerged—Shadow-Lurkers. They were wolf-like creatures, but their bodies were made of shifting smoke and jagged obsidian, with eyes that burned like dying embers.
"Dismount! Now!" Jessica commanded.
The Lurkers didn't bark or growl. Instead, they emitted a low, vibrating hum that made Marin stagger, clutching her head. "Ugh... it feels like my brain is vibrating!"
"It’s a resonance attack!" Malric shouted, raising his staff. A dome of translucent blue light snapped into existence around them. "They're trying to destabilize our internal magic!"
The Awakening
The lead Lurker lunged, its smoky claws raking against Malric’s shield. The barrier flickered. Marin recovered, drawing her sword with a metallic shing, and dove into the fray. "Get back, Marley!"
In the chaos, one of the smaller Lurkers bypassed the shield through a gap in the roots. It lunged at Marin, catching her across the shoulder. She gasped, her sword arm dropping as blood began to soak through her tunic.
"Marin!" Jessica cried, turning to strike the creature with a burst of silver light.
Marley watched in horror. Seeing Marin—the girl who had just been joking with her—hunched over in pain triggered something deep within her. It wasn't the "reborn" training Jessica had; it was a raw, instinctive panic for someone she cared about.
"No! Stop it!" Marley screamed, reaching out toward Marin.
She didn't throw a fireball or a bolt of lightning. Instead, a wave of pure, brilliant white light erupted from Marley’s chest. It wasn't a destructive force; it felt warm, like a summer afternoon.
The light washed over Marin. To everyone’s shock, the jagged wound on her shoulder didn't just stop bleeding—the skin literally knit itself back together in seconds. The tattered fabric of her tunic remained, but the flesh beneath was unscarred.
The burst of energy was so potent that it acted as a physical repellant to the Shadow-Lurkers. The "Life-Energy" was anathema to their smoky forms; they let out silent shieks and dissolved back into the underbrush, fleeing the overwhelming presence of Marley's power.
The Realization
Silence returned to the forest, but this time it was peaceful. Marley stood trembling, her hands still faintly glowing with that soft, white radiance.
Marin stood up, rotating her shoulder in disbelief. "It's... it's gone. The pain, the cut... everything. I feel like I just slept for twelve hours."
Malric approached Marley, his expression one of profound academic interest mixed with awe. "That wasn't a standard restoration spell, Marley. You didn't use a formula. You projected raw 'Origin' energy into a biological template."
Jessica walked over and pulled her trembling cousin into a hug. "You're a Healer, Marley. And a powerful one."
Marley looked at her hands, the glow finally fading. "I just... I didn't want her to be hurt. Is that what I am now? A magical doctor?"
"In this world," Jessica said, looking at the map which had now settled into a calm, steady glow, "a Healer is the most important person in the room. You just saved our Knight."
Marin grinned, sheathing her sword. "Tell you what, kid—you keep the skin on my bones, and I’ll make sure nothing with claws gets within ten feet of you. Deal?"
Marley gave a small, shaky smile. "Deal."
