The mountain wind howled like a wounded beast as the group reached Stone-Hollow. The village was a grim place, built of jagged slate and cold iron, shadowed by the towering peak that housed the dungeon.
Malric stood at the entrance, his boots planted firmly on the frozen earth. He didn't need spectacles to see the danger; his eyes were sharp, scanning the stone for the telltale shimmer of ancient wards. He was already in "defense mode," his jaw set tight as he looked back at his sister, Marin.
"Check your straps again, Marin," Malric commanded, his voice gruff. "And keep your shield tilted. These mountain dungeons are known for vertical traps. I don't want a stray rock cracking your helm."
Marin sighed, adjusting her heavy gauntlet. "Malric, I’ve been a knight for years. I think I can handle a cave."
"It’s not just a cave," Malric countered, his hand gripping his staff until his knuckles turned white. "It’s a graveyard for people who think like that. Jessica, keep the rear covered. Marley, stay behind me."
Jessica gave a small, supportive nod, stepping back to let Malric take the lead on the strategy. She knew this trek was weighing on him—he was always more on edge when Marin was at the front of the line.
The Trapped Path
They stepped into the darkness. The air was thick with the scent of damp minerals and the cold, stagnant taste of old magic. After a few hundred yards, they hit the first fork. The floor was a mosaic of etched eyes, their pupils carved deep into the stone.
"Stop," Malric barked. He didn't use a lens; he simply closed his eyes, sensing the vibration of the mana through the floor. "The floor is a trigger. It’s set to react to the weight of metal. Marin, if you take one more step in that plate armor, the ceiling is coming down on all of us."
"So what do we do?" Marley asked, clutching her satchel.
"We walk the ridges," Malric said. He pointed his staff at the narrow, uncarved borders of the tiles. "It’s barely three inches wide. I’ll go first to test the stability. Marin, you follow me. If you slip, I’ve got a kinetic tether ready to catch you."
The process was slow and agonizing. Malric watched every step Marin took, his breath held in his chest. He was the anchor, his magic vibrating with the effort of keeping the group's "weight" from registering on the ancient sensors.
The First Fragment
They reached the side chamber where the first crystal fragment sat atop a black pedestal.
"Jessica, stay back and keep a light held high," Malric directed. "Marley, watch for movement in the shadows. I’m going to disarm the weight-sensor."
With surgical precision, Malric used a gust of controlled wind to slide the crystal off while replacing it with a heavy stone from his pack. His hands didn't shake—they never did when Marin’s safety was on the line. The click was soft, and the dungeon remained still.
"Got it," Malric grunted, handing the fragment to Jessica for safekeeping.
The Intruder
As they turned to leave, the temperature in the room plummeted. Marin’s hand went to her hilt, but she wasn't looking at a monster.
A man emerged from the shadows of a fluted pillar, leaning back with an insufferable air of casualness. He was lean, dressed in dark leathers, and he was looking straight at Marin with a lazy, admiring smirk.
"You know," the stranger said, his voice a smooth, low drawl, "most knights just stumble into the spikes. It’s refreshing to see one who actually knows how to balance on her toes. Especially one with such... excellent form."
Malric’s eyes turned cold instantly. He stepped in front of Marin, his staff glowing with a sharp, warning light. "Who are you, and why are you watching my sister?"
The man—Robert Atten—didn't look at Malric. He kept his eyes on Marin, his smirk deepening. "Just a humble resident of the deeps, scholar. And I wasn't watching 'your sister.' I was watching a masterpiece of martial discipline."
Malric’s teeth winced. He could already tell he was going to hate this man.
