The sun was beginning to dip, casting long, bruised shadows across the forest floor. At the main camp, Jessica and Malric sat in a heavy, fragile silence, the Mirror now safely smothered under the heavy canvas roll.
The silence was shattered by the sound of crashing brush and shouting—but the voices were all wrong.
"I am telling you, your legs are too long for this path!" a high-pitched, feminine voice (Marek) yelled from the thicket.
"And I’m telling you to stop scratching my—I mean, YOUR—nose! It’s tickling my brain!" a deep, masculine roar (Marin) replied.
Marek and Marin burst into the clearing. Jessica’s eyes widened, her own lingering embarrassment momentarily forgotten as she took in the sight. Marin, inhabiting Marek’s tall, muscular frame, was walking with a wide-legged, clumsy gait. Marek, trapped in Marin’s body, was frantically trying to braid her long hair out of his face.
"What... what happened to you two?" Malric asked, standing up slowly.
"The rock! The glowing rock happened!" Marin-as-Marek shouted, pointing a large finger at the backpack. "We’re swapped, Malric! And I can feel every time he blinks!"
The Critical Mass
As the siblings stepped closer to the center of the camp, the canvas-covered Mirror on the ground began to vibrate. The Transmutation Stone in Marek’s bag responded in kind. A high-pitched, glass-shattering hum filled the clearing.
"Elsa! Do something!" Jessica cried out, covering her ears.
Elsa scrambled to her feet, her staff glowing with a fierce violet light. "They’re resonating! The Mirror and the Stone are trying to merge their effects! If we don't break the loop now, the swap will become permanent, and Jessica’s mind will be locked in that trance forever!"
"How do we stop it?" Malric yelled over the rising wind.
"The Sage-link!" Elsa commanded. "Malric, Jessica—you are the anchors! You have to touch the artifacts at the exact same time. Use the connection the Mirror gave you. Don't fight the attraction—use it to channel the energy!"
The Resolution
Jessica looked at Malric. Her face flushed, remembering the intimacy of the Mirror's trance, but she saw the determination in his eyes. They had to trust the bond the Demon Lord had tried to weaponize.
"On three," Malric said.
Jessica reached for the muffled Mirror. Malric reached for the pulsing Stone in the bag.
"One... two... THREE!"
As their fingers made contact with the cold, vibrating surfaces, a blinding pillar of silver and violet light erupted in the center of the camp. The force was immense. Jessica felt Malric’s heartbeat as if it were her own, and for a split second, the "Hidden Truth" between them wasn't a curse—it was a bridge.
A massive CRACK echoed through the mountains, like a giant mirror shattering.
The light collapsed.
The Aftermath
Silence returned to the forest, heavier than before.
Marek collapsed into the dirt, feeling the familiar, heavy weight of his own muscles return. He checked his hands—large, calloused, and masculine. "I’m me! Oh, thank the gods, I’m me!"
Marin fell back against a tree, gasping as her shorter, more agile frame returned to her. She checked her chest, then her hair, letting out a breath of pure relief. "If you ever touch that stone again, Marek, I will end you."
Jessica sat on the ground, the Mirror now dull and grey in her hand. The white haze was gone from her eyes. She looked at Malric, who was still holding the Stone, his chest heaving. The artifacts were dormant, their "calibration" complete.
"Is everyone... okay?" Malric asked, his voice rough.
No one answered immediately. They were all back in their own bodies, and the magical trances were gone, but the memories remained. The siblings shared a look of newfound respect, and Jessica and Malric shared a look that promised a conversation they weren't yet ready to have.
"We survived the Sync Suite," Elsa whispered, leaning on her staff. "But the Demon Lord’s map shows one more thing. We've proven we can handle the Mind, the Body, and the Heart."
She looked toward the horizon, where the Obsidian Ridge loomed. "Now, we have to face the Soul."
