The descent into the Valtoria aqueducts felt like stepping into the throat of a dying beast. The air was thick with the smell of stagnant water and old moss, and the only sound was the constant, rhythmic drip-drop of moisture hitting the stone. Unlike the dry, crystalline Maw, these halls were slick and treacherous.
"The water levels are higher than the map indicated," Malric whispered, holding the Labyrinthine Prism aloft. It acted like a lantern, but its light was distorted by the heavy mist. "According to the flow rate, the Demon General has reversed the valves. He’s trying to flood the lower levels to keep the King’s army out."
Jessica waded through knee-deep water, her staff glowing with a protective blue light. "He’s not just flooding it, Malric. Look at the surface."
Thin, oily ribbons of black ichor swirled in the water. As they watched, the ribbons began to coalesce, rising up like liquid shadows.
The Drowning Dead
From the dark pools emerged the Drowning Dead—skeletons fused with the rusted remains of the town’s ancient plumbing. Their ribcages were filled with churning, dark water, and their eyes glowed with the sickly green light of the Demon General’s necromancy.
"They aren't just undead," Malric realized, his eyes widening behind his spectacles. "They’re hydraulic constructs! Their strength is powered by the water pressure!"
One of the creatures lunged, its arm extending like a pressurized piston. Jessica barely parried the strike, the force vibrating through her bones.
"Malric! The Prism!" she shouted. "If we can’t disrupt the water flow, we’ll be crushed by sheer force!"
The Prism’s Calibration
Malric scrambled to a raised stone platform, his fingers flying over the runes of the Labyrinthine Prism. "I need to synchronize the Prism's frequency with the local ley lines! If I can create a localized 'void zone,' the water in their bodies will lose its kinetic energy!"
As Malric worked, Jessica stood at the edge of the platform, a lone sentry against the rising tide. She unleashed a flurry of ice shards, freezing the joints of the approaching skeletons, but more kept rising from the depths.
"Almost... there..." Malric gritted his teeth. A bolt of dark energy from a skeletal archer shattered a nearby pipe, spraying scalding steam across the room. He didn't flinch. His focus was entirely on the intersection of math and magic. "Jessica! Step back! Zero-point surge in three... two... one!"
The Stillness
A shockwave of silver light erupted from the Prism. It didn't explode; it hummed.
Instantly, the violent churning of the water stopped. The Drowning Dead froze mid-lunge, the dark ichor inside them losing its glow. With their power source neutralized, the heavy rusted armor they wore became a burden rather than a weapon. They collapsed back into the water with a series of heavy splashes.
The silence that followed was heavy. The water level began to recede, flowing back into the proper drainage channels.
The Shared Breath
Malric slumped against the Prism, his chest heaving. The silver light cast long shadows against the walls, making the damp chamber look like a cathedral of glass.
"You're getting better at that," Jessica said, wading back toward him. She reached up and wiped a splash of cold water from his cheek. "The 'liability' Marcus spoke of seems to be nowhere in sight."
Malric looked at her, the adrenaline still coursing through him. "I realized something while I was calibrating the Prism. The General isn't just using magic. He’s using the town's own infrastructure against itself. It’s... it’s a systematic execution."
He reached out, his hand hovering near hers. "Jessica, if we don't reach the core soon, he won't just kill the people. He’ll erase the city's foundation. We’re running out of variables."
Jessica took his hand, her grip firm and grounding. "Then we stop being variables, Malric. We become the solution."
From the darkness ahead, a deep, resonant bell began to toll. It wasn't a church bell; it was the sound of metal striking metal in the heart of the dungeon. The General was calling his lieutenants.
