The silence in the alley was ringing. Austin’s tablet lay hissed and smoking on the wet pavement, a casualty of the raw energy Laura had just unleashed. Laura herself stood trembling, her sleeve scorched away, watching the faint green light beneath her skin fade into a dull, pulsing hum.
"Laura..." Austin’s voice was barely a whisper. He took a hesitant step forward, his eyes fixed on her arm. "That wasn't... that wasn't a spark. You just leveled a wall. You looked like—"
"I don't know, Austin! I don't know!" Laura turned, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and a strange, electric adrenaline. "I just felt this... this heat. Like something was waking up inside me."
Before Austin could reach her, the air in the alley began to vibrate. It wasn't the jagged, sickly hum of the UMA creature. It was a clean, melodic resonance—the sound of precision engineering.
The Arrival of the Legends
A sleek, black transport hovered silently above the alley entrance, its cloaking field shimmering like oil on water. From the shadows of the containers, three figures emerged with the synchronized grace of a strike team.
"Energy signature confirmed," a cold, feminine voice echoed.
Elizabeth West (Nightshadow) stepped into the dim light, her bow collapsed at her side but her hand hovering near her belt. Behind her, a tall, muscular man with iridescent skin—Leon—stood like a wall, his eyes scanning the perimeter.
"Stay back!" Austin suddenly lunged in front of Laura, his arms spread wide. His legs were shaking, and he looked ridiculous in his lopsided glasses and "Space Invaders" shirt, but his face was set in a mask of pure defiance. "I don't know who you are, but you're not taking her! I’ve seen the news! I know about the 'Detention Centers'!"
"Kid, move aside," Avan said, stepping out from the other side, a small blue spark dancing between his fingers. "We're not the bad guys. We're the ones who keep the bad guys from eating your lunch."
"Austin, it’s okay," Laura whispered, grabbing the back of his shirt.
"It’s not okay! They have weapons, Laura!"
The Master Steps Forward
The back of the transport opened, and a fourth figure descended. She wasn't wearing a mask. Victoria Vega walked toward them, her footsteps silent. She looked at Austin, seeing the raw, protective fear in his eyes—the same fear she had seen in her father’s eyes years ago.
"He’s right to be protective, Elizabeth. Stand down," Victoria said.
Elizabeth and Avan relaxed their stances instantly. Victoria stopped five feet away from the teenagers. She looked at Laura’s arm, where the faint green glow was still fighting to resurface.
"Laura Dawson," Victoria said softly. "My name is Victoria. Two years ago, a piece of me became a piece of you. I’ve been looking for you for a long time."
Laura stared at her. "The... the first Cybergirl. The one from the news."
"I'm not just a story, Laura. And neither are you anymore." Victoria reached out, her hand shimmering with a gentle violet hue. "That creature you just fought? There are more coming. Dementra is moving, and she can track the energy in your arm better than we can. If you stay here, you’re putting Austin and everyone else in this city at risk."
Austin looked at Victoria, then at Laura. "Is she... is she like you? Is she going to turn into a machine?"
"She's going to turn into a protector," Victoria replied, her gaze shifting to Austin. "And if you’re as smart as your tablet readings suggest, you know she can’t do that alone. She needs her friends. She needs people who knew her before the armor."
The Decision
Laura looked at the ruins of the alley, then at the small child who was now being safely gathered by West Corp medics. She felt the hum in her arm—the Cybergem calling out to the woman standing in front of her.
"Can you teach me?" Laura asked. "Can you make it... stop hurting?"
"I can't make it stop," Victoria said, a flicker of her own trauma passing through her eyes. "But I can teach you how to carry the weight."
Laura reached back and grabbed Austin’s hand. "Come with me? I... I don't want to go into this without a 'tech guy.'"
Austin swallowed hard, looking at the black transport and the legendary V-Team. He was a nerd from the suburbs, and he was being invited into the heart of the world's greatest secret.
"I've got your back, Laura," Austin said, his voice finally steady. "Even if I have to hack a god to do it."
