The weekend after the troll incident arrived with a sense of calm that felt almost surreal.
The castle seemed quieter than usual, as if Hogwarts itself had exhaled after the chaos of Halloween night. Outside the tall windows, autumn had settled firmly over the grounds. The sky was pale and clear, the air crisp, and golden leaves drifted lazily across the courtyards.
Students filled the corridors, enjoying the rare freedom of a weekend morning.
Some headed toward the grounds.
Others toward the library.
A few simply wandered the castle in small groups, exploring hidden corners and talking about the troll encounter that still dominated conversations.
But Mira Silverthorne had other plans.
At the Slytherin table that morning, she finished her tea and stood.
Draco Malfoy looked up from the Daily Prophet, “You’re thinking about him again, aren’t you?”
Mira tilted her head slightly, “Him?”
Draco folded the newspaper, “The enormous three-headed dog guarding a forbidden corridor.”
Mira smiled faintly, “I was curious.”
Draco leaned back in his chair with a dramatic sigh, “Well then.” He stood as well, “Let’s go visit him.”
Pip the Niffler chirped happily and climbed onto Mira’s shoulder.
The castle corridors were mostly empty that morning.
Their footsteps echoed softly along the stone floors as Mira and Draco made their way toward the third floor.
Sunlight streamed through the tall windows lining the hallways, painting bright rectangles of gold across the walls.
Draco kept his hands tucked into his robes, “You know,” he said casually, “most students would avoid the location of a giant monster.”
Mira glanced at him, “Most students don’t have Pip.”
Pip squeaked proudly.
Draco rolled his eyes, “Ah yes. The fearless Niffler.”
They turned a corner.
Soon the corridor appeared before them.
The one with the locked door.
The one where they had first encountered the creature.
Even in daylight, the corridor carried a strange stillness.
The door remained closed.
Heavy.
Silent.
Mira stepped closer.
She paused briefly.
Then she gently knocked.
Draco blinked, “You’re… knocking?”
Mira nodded, “It’s polite.”
There was a moment of silence.
Then—
A deep rumble echoed from behind the door.
Followed by three massive snorts.
Draco grinned, “Well, he remembers you.”
Mira slowly opened the door.
The enormous room beyond smelled faintly of stone, hay, and warm fur.
And in the center of the room lay Fluffy.
The massive Cerberus lifted his heads as the door opened.
Three enormous pairs of eyes blinked at the visitors.
One head tilted.
Another sniffed.
The third yawned, revealing rows of teeth the size of kitchen knives.
Draco folded his arms, “I still can’t believe this thing is allowed in a school.”
Fluffy’s left head recognized Mira instantly.
The giant dog bounded forward excitedly.
The ground shook.
Draco instinctively stepped back, “Careful—!”
But Mira simply laughed softly.
Fluffy lowered his massive heads eagerly.
She reached up and gently scratched behind one of his ears.
The dog let out a thunderous purr-like rumble.
All three heads leaned closer.
Draco stared, “…He likes you.”
Mira smiled, “He’s lonely.”
Fluffy’s middle head rested gently on the floor beside her.
His enormous tail thumped against the stone like a slow drumbeat.
Mira walked slowly around the room.
She examined the space carefully.
There was straw in one corner.
A few large bones scattered nearby.
And the large trapdoor Fluffy guarded.
But aside from that—
The room was empty.
Draco noticed the same thing, “He’s stuck here all the time.”
Mira nodded, “Yes.”
Fluffy whined softly.
One of his heads nudged her gently with his nose.
The enormous dog clearly wanted attention.
Mira placed her hand against his fur, “Do you get lonely?”
Fluffy made a soft grumbling noise.
Draco crouched slightly, “Probably bored too.”
One of the dog’s heads sniffed Draco cautiously.
Draco froze, “Right… easy there.”
The head sneezed.
Draco grimaced, “…Lovely.”
Mira laughed quietly.
After a moment, Mira knelt and opened her enchanted suitcase.
Draco raised an eyebrow, “You’re not planning to put the Cerberus in your luggage, are you?”
Mira shook her head slightly, “No.”
She lifted the lid.
Inside the suitcase was not clothes.
Or books.
Instead—
A shimmering doorway opened.
Beyond it lay a breathtaking sanctuary.
A vast, hidden dimension.
Green hills stretched beneath a glowing sky.
Crystal-clear streams wound through forests of ancient trees.
Small magical creatures wandered peacefully through the landscape.
The air shimmered with gentle magic.
Draco stared.
Even though he had seen the sanctuary before, it still amazed him.
“Merlin…” Draco whispered.
Fluffy leaned closer.
All three heads sniffed the air.
Then his eyes widened with interest.
The scent of forests.
Fresh grass.
Open sky.
The giant dog’s tail wagged wildly.
Mira smiled warmly, “This is my sanctuary.” She looked up at the enormous guardian, “If you ever feel lonely…”
Fluffy tilted his heads.
“You can come visit.”
Draco looked startled, “You’re offering a Cerberus a weekend getaway?”
Mira shrugged lightly, “He deserves somewhere peaceful too.”
Fluffy sniffed the opening again.
Then—
One enormous paw stepped forward.
Into the sanctuary.
Draco blinked, “…He’s actually doing it.”
Fluffy’s heads looked around curiously.
The giant dog stepped halfway through the portal.
Inside the sanctuary, birds scattered into the air.
Small creatures paused in surprise.
Fluffy barked happily.
The sound echoed across the hills.
Draco rubbed his temples, “Well, I suppose we’ve just introduced Hogwarts’ three-headed guard dog to a magical nature reserve.”
Mira laughed softly.
Fluffy explored the sanctuary carefully.
The giant dog sniffed the grass.
He splashed one paw into the stream.
Then shook himself happily.
Water sprayed everywhere.
Draco jumped back, “Oh brilliant.”
Mira nonverbally used a spell to dry their clothes.
Fluffy ran across the hills, chasing glowing butterflies.
All three heads barked with excitement.
The giant Cerberus looked happier than he ever had inside the dark stone chamber.
Mira watched quietly.
Her luminous teal eyes soft with kindness, “He needed space.”
Draco leaned beside her, “He’s enormous.”
“Yes.”
“And technically guarding something very important.”
Mira nodded, “He’ll go back when he’s ready.”
Fluffy soon trotted back toward the portal.
One of his heads licked Mira enthusiastically.
Draco snorted, “Well. That’s gratitude.”
Mira chuckled at she nonverbally cast a spell that cleaned her from the drool.
The Cerberus carefully stepped back into the room.
His tail wagged happily.
Mira gently closed the suitcase.
Fluffy curled up on the floor.
This time, he looked far more content.
The enormous dog soon settled into a comfortable position.
Three heads rested on the floor.
His breathing slowed.
Within minutes—
Fluffy fell asleep.
The deep rumble of his snores filled the room like distant thunder.
Draco leaned against the wall, “Well, that was unexpected.”
Mira smiled softly, “He just needed company.”
Draco studied her thoughtfully, “You know something?”
“What?”
“You make friends with the strangest creatures.”
Mira considered that, “Creatures are easier than people sometimes.”
Draco chuckled, “Fair point.”
Pip chirped from her shoulder.
Before leaving, Mira gently scratched Fluffy behind the ears again.
The giant dog’s tail thumped softly even in his sleep.
“If you ever feel lonely again,” she whispered, “you’re welcome to visit.”
Fluffy snored peacefully.
Draco opened the door, “Come on.”
They stepped back into the corridor.
As the door closed behind them, Draco glanced at her.
“You know… if anyone finds out you’ve given the Cerberus access to a magical sanctuary, we might get expelled.” He commented.
Mira smiled faintly, “He won’t tell.”
Draco smirked, “I suppose that’s true.”
They walked down the corridor together.
Behind them, in the quiet chamber beyond the locked door—
Fluffy the three-headed guardian slept peacefully.
And somewhere deep within his enormous mind, the memory of open fields and running water lingered.
For the first time since arriving at Hogwarts…
The guardian of the trapdoor was not alone.
