It was long ago, when I was waiting for myself to get adopted by a good family. I saw my friends getting taken, but I was still here. One day, I saw two old people looking for a pet, and they were staring at me with their wrinkled eyes. I wished I wouldn’t be taken by them. I dreamt of having kids around me, but these people were in their 50’s. The old woman looked too excited about taking me home. Their home was very big, but only the two of them lived there.
As a few days went by, my perception about the couple changed. They were caring and very adorable toward each other. She cooks really amazing food. Sometimes the home would be filled with relatives or their kids. The lady loved to talk a lot, and she was the most beautiful, sweet person I had ever known. I was always mischievous, but the old man would always take me for a walk. They treated me like family.
After 10 years, it was almost midnight, and we were about to sleep on the terrace. Suddenly, the old woman started coughing, and her husband rushed to bring her water. In a matter of seconds, she became still, like a statue, and never moved again. I never wanted this to happen. Losing the old lady felt like losing warmth itself. The next day, everyone visited and then left. The house felt quieter than ever. The old man looked lifeless without her. Seeing him like that made me feel helpless. I wished I could stay with him and somehow take his pain away.
Every day he worked, cooked food for me, and still took me for walks. Days passed, and fewer people came to visit. One day, I felt very uneasy in my body, but I could not tell him. It seemed like I was aging too. I could not walk properly, and he helped me with everything. One day, he went to the office, and I was there alone, unable to sit or move, struggling. I saw flashes of my memories, from my first day in their house to my last. I found myself lying on the ground, unconscious.
He sat beside me for a long time before they took me away.
