1948, in Apache territory, a young woman named Barbara Montalban announces her decision to leave the Apache tribe that raised her.
BARBARA: “Apache Chief, I wish to depart from here, see the world. I am grateful for the guidance I received here.”
APACHE CHIEF: “You have learned all there is to learn from the Apache. Very well. You’re free to experience the vast world for yourself.”
BARBARA: “Shį shį. Daago naasha gonaa, Ndee bił nizhóó doo shį.” (Thank you. As always, I am blessed to call the Apache my family.)
APACHIE CHIEF: “I’dishníísh, shiyáshí.” (Go To it, my daughter.)
The young woman then makes a plan to head to the nearest town.
BARBARA(voiceover): “This is the new beginning. I’m looking forward to new experiences.”
Many miles later, she arrived at the nearest town, the town known as Millennium Valley.
After arriving, Barbara observes the surroundings in fascination.
While walking through town, she sees an abandoned Marshal’s office.
She walks in and the first thing she sees is a slightly cracked picture of the apparent previous Marshal, along with a Marshal’s badge.
BARBARA(voiceover): “What’s this? This must be the Marshal, but what happened? Did he quit, or did he....hmm, I’ve got to investigate this.”
Afterward, she asks a local resident about the previous Marshal.
BARBARA: “Excuse my rudeness. My name is Barbara. I just arrived here and I just saw the Marshal’s office. Do you know what happened? Did he-
LOCAL RESIDENT: “Afraid so. It was a week ago, a group of outlaws known as “The Vile Gunslingers “ came and took over the town. The Marshal challenged them and they gunned him down, no contest. Afterwards, they left.”
BARBARA: “I’m sorry. That’s horrible. Is there another volunteer?”
LOCAL RESIDENT: “No ma’am. After the Marshal’s death, no one dared to rise up to the task.”
BARBARA: “Any distinct characteristics about any of them that you remember?”
LOCAL RESIDENT: “Well, let’s see....yes. The leader, the most dangerous of ‘em. “Silas, The Marksman.” He had a scar over the lower part of his face.”
BARBARA: “How many of ‘em were there?”
LOCAL RESIDENT: “Three of ‘em, all male and they were the fiercest bunch ever to come here.”
BARBARA: “I see. Well, thanks Mister. I’ll be seein’ you.”
With this new information, Barbara has a new plan.
BARBARA(voiceover): “It’s like I thought. He was gunned down, without a fair chance. Typical outlaw strategies. They don’t fight fair, but three against one?”
She then tries to gather the town residents at the Marshal’s office.
BARBARA: “Everyone!! Can I have your attention for just a moment?”
TOWN RESIDENTS:”(Mumbling among themselves.)”
BARBARA: “Now, I understand what happened to the Marshal. I want to tell you all that I’m investigating and want to volunteer for the role of your new Marshal. I will assure you I will work toward a safe and productive town. What do ‘ya say?”
RESIDENT 1: “You expect us to believe a woman like you can handle the Marshal’s badge? You must confuse bravery with ignorance.”
BARBARA: “I know it’s hard to believe, but I promise you I’m more capable than you know. I wanna help you. I know about the outlaws that killed the Marshal and I wanna make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
RESIDENT 2: “Woman, you don’t stand a chance. You’d best give it up and get outta here.”
The town turns their backs on Barbara and go back to their business.
BARBARA: “So that’s how it is. I’m gonna have to prove that I’m worthy, and I WILL.”
Moments later, a young man rides into town.
YOUNG MAN: “Excuse me, ma’am. Are you just getting here, too?”
BARBARA: “Yes, as matter of fact I was just getting settled. My name is Barbara. Nice to meet you.”
YOUNG MAN: “Same here. My name is McKay. Dan McKay. So..if you don’t mind me asking, what brings you here to Millennium Valley?”
BARBARA: “Well I wanted to find something, something special. That brought me here. I’m trying for the approval of the town so I can be the new Marshal.”
YOUNG MAN(Dan McKay): “Well, don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll win them over. I have plans to become a saddle maker. You know, make and then sell specially made saddles. Something like that.”
BARBARA: “I see. Well, Dan. I wish you good luck.”
YOUNG MAN(Dan McKay): “You too. Goodbye.”
A smile on her face, Barbara thought to herself:
”What do I have to do? They’re a tough bunch, but more importantly, this town needs law and stability. I WILL win them over. Also, I’ll have to keep an eye out for any mean outlaws.”
Barbara takes out her gun and stares at it fiercely:
”I’ve lived with the Apache all my life, I know they rarely use these, but I know from experience that in the ways of the west, a gun is essential, as long as you walk a straight line with it. However I prove myself will be with THIS....well, I guess I should find a place to board off.”
As she walks away, four outlaws ride into town and head for the saloon.
In the saloon..
OUTLAW 1: “A deck of cards. Make it quick or I’ll beat you senseless!!”
BARTENDER: “R-right away!!”
OUTLAW 1: “Well, guys, shall we sit? Play a couple hands?”
OUTLAW 2: “Right!!”
Frightened, the bartender tries to get his rifle from behind the bar.
(Gunshot)
Outlaw 1 put a bullet through one of the whiskey bottles behind the bar.
OUTLAW 1: “I wouldn’t do that, barkeep!! Not unless you want a bullet through the skull.”
Hearing the gunshot, Barbara cautiously heads over to the saloon.
FEMALE OUTLAW: “Hey, barkeep, you seem to like your little collection. You might appreciate some firepower to compliment it.”
The female outlaw begins putting bullets through the collection of whiskey bottles behind the bar.
Barbara arrives at the saloon, but remains cautious.
BARBARA: “What do I do? This is where it counts....wait. I got an idea.”
